John McLane was more relatable than all the ESL bodybuilder action guys we were seeing on the regular. The dynamic between the hero and villain was also something we hadn't really seen before and it was done perfectly.

The appeal of the film, to me, is the excellent direction by John McTiernan. His only shit film is Rollerball (2002). A much overlooked director in my opinion.

I dont understand. I get hating the sequels, I wasn't fond of the ones after 3 myself, but the first one is perfect. A game of cat and mouse between two men who are very clever in very different ways. Its great watching McLane get the shit kicked out of him and then grab the win by the skin of his teeth with one crazy gamble or quick witted move while he goads the arrogant, suave Gruber into a frothing rage.
my favourite part of die hard is how John McClane couldn't have done it without the African-American cop or the African-American limousine driver. If they weren't around to help him, McClane would have been fuuuuuucked.
