If you're referring to their -RARBG released rips, they're garbage. They never realized crf encoding is so much better than the ridiculous way they do it giving every single thing the same exact arbitrary bitrate. It's too bad because they were so prolific with 1000's of shitty encodes.

The quality is better. So for those people who a pixel peepers like me or get triggered at over-softened video, x265 sucks because of the way it's designed. It's designed to throw out too much data to make that low bitrate happen and that fricking sucks.
Have you ever compared two rips of the same material, with the same video bit rate? One x264, and one x265? The x265 should look better. The problem with most x265 rips is the guys who make them think the codec is magic and try to use super low bit rates. Of COURSE they don't look so great.
Pretty sure I have. Also this would get complicated because resolution and screen size and all other things play a factor.

That seems odd to me, given that h.265 is the codec 4K BluRays use. Surely, when the bit rates are sufficient, it looks good. I can't imagine they would have settled on that codec otherwise.
The reason they use h.265 for 4k is because it's low bitrate 4k movie. Shit, to put it at x264 it would be much much bigger but look a lot better. But in order to see that quality difference you'd have to like look at it at an EVEN BIGGER screen or blow up the image and shit to start analyzing it.
But at 4k, the resolution is so high that it's good enough no matter what bitrate it uses.
At 1080p the full image is there in your face to analyze easily and it isn't that high anymore.

4K BluRays can have bit rates up to 128Mbps. You consider that "low bit rate"? It's the highest bit rate available with consumer deliverables. Have to get a hold of Digital Cinema Packages to get any better. Those go up to 250Mbps.

I mean, obviously they're high as all frick bitrate compared to Yify or other shit downloaded from the internet, but when if you look at fully uncompressed video, next to a high bitrate 4k bluray, would you still be standing "in awe" at 4k bluray disc quality?

Gotcha. Hard to say. Uncompressed video is downright HUGE. Kinda impractical even for use when shooting movies. I know they CAN shoot uncompressed, of course, but I think they often use ARRIRAW codec or some such, because those cards get filled up FAST with uncompressed.
Oops. Nevermind me. ARRIRAW *is* uncompressed. Still, I doubt we ever have a consumer format that offers us uncompressed video. Technology is crazy though, maybe it will happen someday.
