A lot of WWII era spies were actually charismatic, morally ambiguous characters living lavish cosmopolitan lifestyle, like Bond.
You can consider Bond as a composite character of Dusko Popov, William Stephenson and a whole bunch of others.

But you are right, surveillance got far better, people got a bit more cautious about who they talk with and trying befriend Russia naval attaché to Portugal and seduce his wife to get to his secret documents is far too much risk and work when you can just drop a flashdrive with a trojan by the embassy (or just ask nicely on Warthunder forum)

      1. it's a movie/book, no one cares as long as it isn't boring
      2. the plot itself requires him to be among rich people, and then when he has to escape from these people's goons he needs a fast car
      3. it's just the product of a different era, the first book was written in the 50's and it's not like fleming was living much differently than him in his youth
      >His lifestyle at Eton brought him into conflict with his housemaster, E. V. Slater, who disapproved of Fleming's attitude, his hair oil, his ownership of a car and his relations with women.

yeah its obvious its cheap, but even cheap suits show the proper feudal spirit, so to speak. so it is still much appreciated. not everyone can afford a nice suit but everyone can afford a suit. i can't abide snobgays who insist that anything that isn't from Savile Row is pointless.
wearing a suit is about showing respect to the people around you, not about dressing up. it's the most neutral and pleasant way to dress. you do it to show that you don't feel the need to stand out and you respect your fellow man enough that you are willing to show that in the way you present yourself.

the rest is a bit snobbish. it's obvious anon isn't a man of wealth and taste. still he bought a (cheap) suit and apparently wears it sometimes. it shows the proper feudal spirit. it's admirable, though not, as you say, impressive.

                it's the posture.
a cheap suit isn't made with posture in mind, so you either get someone fighting against the fit of the suit, causing stretching and even worse fit, or you get someone conforming to the 'fit' of the suit, resulting in a stiff, uncomfortable posture like picrel. a well tailored suit can be worn with a relaxed posture effortlessly.

corruption and inside trading, like the average pawn in the military industrial complex. The higher you are in any hierarchy, the better you are placed to exploit the system for personal gain. James Bond could easily exploit the volatility he creates through assisination of important corporate , military and government figures to profit in the stock market. He can help cronys set up business operations with his connections in exchange for ""fees etc. Ive seen it with the guys at my school who all inherited their fathers postings in middle management government positions. Im sure being a spy and an assassin for decades can open up opportunities. These days making money is about who you know in government and connections.

      >Isn't bond rich
I don’t think so. I don’t understand why he doesn’t just sell the place, most of the value must be in the land of the estate. They had sold the gun collection there (apart from Bond’s father’s hunting rifle). I’m guessing he’s renting the land the estate has to cover expenses but doesn’t look like he’s turning much profit. The house itself looks like it hasn’t been maintained.

I meant he owns the estate and collects rent from the land, from farmers etc. That’s how estates like that used to work.

            Anonymous

ok sure, but the key word there is used, past tense.
I imagine he probably has sold off parcels of land here and there during his life and this is what finances most of his lifestyle (im sure he plays the stock market as well).

              Anonymous

              >the key word there is used
Sure, I don’t know what kind of return you can get on land in a place like that these days. Most of estates like that seized to exist sometime after WW2 at the latest I think. The way they talked about selling the gun collection made me believe they were sold to raise money for expenses, but I could be wrong. Easiest for Bond would’ve been to sell land and invest in financial markets, just like you said. Owning and managing land like that is a hassle of it own.
