Same! I miss the days when cartoon characters were treated as movie stars and audiences were able to have a suspension of disbelief and just assume that the shirt was a movie they starred in as an actor and not a piece of lore and world building.
Not that I didn’t also like the lore and world building of the Disney comics, but those were different characters imo
Agreed, I like that, unlike SpongeBob or even bugs bunny, it’s a lot easier to put Mickey and his friends in different situations/settings without it feeling weird
don't forget the weird added details they removed like almost as soon as they arrived
Mickeys current appearence is from 1939, but even in that first appearance in Mickeys Surprise Party he had grey buttons.
Then in the 40's he had more three dimentional ears and buck teeth for some reason which lasted only three shorts.
january 1st next year
but it means nothing anon because steamboat willies design is different and older and 1939 mickey is technically already public domain
Yeah there’s a lot of odd experimentation and one offs with his design.
Frankly I’m surprised the gloves stuck around and he didn’t wear them until the karnival kid in 1929

I liked how epic mickey actually made the ears turn as they would in the toons
Anyone can just lean over and get an eye full of Mickey's skivvies with those bucket shorts.
>I like Mickey best in story specific outfits.

I wonder why no one has tried to make new characters the same way?
Because lore is too important to modern writers and children who grow up watching five nights at Freddy’s speculation videos on YouTube. No one is going to accept that the character is just an actor and they the premise of the short isn’t real, it all needs to “matter.”
I don't hate the design they did with these cartoons, but I hope they retire it now that they're over.
Mickey is too skinny, Donald is too angular and Goofy is a bad design.
the 2013 redesign is way too "ren and stimpy" for me.
those old cartoons were state of the art animation. at the time they were produced, nobody could possibly do any better. The Mad Doctor was as much about showing off spooky wind effects and having Mickey crawl through a 3D hallway, as it was about saving Pluto. you'd watch them and get the sense that no expense was shared.
these 2013 cartoons were pretty good but had this look of cheapness about them. and that's kind of what we have now in animation, people finding ways to cut corners.
that's the difference between the 1920s and the 2020s.
>watch the final Mickey Mouse short they'd hyped up so much a few months ago
>reused animation everywhere, and clearly no real understanding of the past history of the character on display
I have no idea why Disney wants to pretend that Classic black and white Mickey was some chaos elemental that just spent ALL day slapping pigs and turning cats into violins.
Classic black and white Mickey, I feel that he has a wider appeal for both to kids and adults while the later feels so exclusively targeted towards little kids and toddlers
Why did his shoes turn brown in 1941 and then never become yellow again until the 90's?
It depends on the context although I like Mickey best in story specific outfits.

There's definitely been way more than 2 designs. Even Steamboat Willie was given a new slightly new appearance after Plane Crazy (check the shoes)

Which ones? I’m curious
This
err I know the first one was the little whirlwind
Modern Mickey looks fricking moronic
modern mickey doesn't exist, he's like 4 different designs at the same time.
Poor Mickeys going through an intense identity crisis.
Even worse by the fact that each design has a different voice actor making him near unrecognizable across the board.
wait really? I knew he was different in some video games but not in different shows.
Disney has a knack for finding practically identical VA's though.
Rudish Mickey is voiced by Christopher Diamantopoulos
Disney Junior Mickey is voiced by Bret Iwan
I've heard of Bret. Not Chris. I genuinely assumed they were the same voice.
I like Paul ruddish Mickey
Has public domain kicked in yet?

ngl classic era mickey's probably the best since it's a lot more easier to draw
you don't have to worry about putting the eyes in a very specific area; case in point:
Peach skin Mickey is unironically far cuter.
Left one looks like a serial killer, right one looks like he grooms kids
I like the mickey threads they're always comfy
I always liked the 1940’s-mid1980’s look, his eyes we’re slightly different than the modern design and it was always a pleasing aesthetic to me
his pupils used to be smaller, or were they larger?
His eyes in general were smaller in relation to his head, modern style Mickey has much larger eyes
His head shape was also slightly different
40’s/50’s era Mickey was indeed peak(for some reason it’s on the right in this pic)
yeah middle was what I meant by weird change, he only had those ears for three shorts.
Yeah there’s a lot of odd experimentation and one offs with his design.

Walt loved that mouse. He loved that mouse so much. He knew what was good for him.
Based and true. I wonder what Walt would think of his company these days.
>is mickey safe
>he's okay
>thank frick, wake me up in another 50 years
Classic
nu-mickey
I don't hate this design. Hell, these silly shorts are the beating heart of Disney. It's the only thing they haven't fricked with.

Yeah, I have no idea why goofy got the hobo treatment

Walt didn't like the idea of cartoons being for children, and they weren't really. They were generalised things to chuckle and marvel at.
