speilberg movie is still best and legitimately unnerving outside of the shitty 3rd act
What did she mean by this?
Thanos.
it is the most mixed bag of all time. There are truly great and memorable scenes that really due give you a sense of dread and then a few scenes that are a bit over the top and not that great.
People getting turned to dust is a Holohoax allegory
You might be on to something
Great until the little girl just randomly decides to run outside like an idiot.
It'd be better if there wasn't signature "muh family story" Spielberg shlock
As a kid I saw both the old movie and heard the radio drama(?). the movie scared me the most as a kid because they put a "form" to the aliens and aliens will never not scare me.
actually I haven't seen the faces of the aliens since I was a kid, and looking at the face now It's absolutely hilarious. What a sad looking lad. If only I could shake off the eeriness of greys
What is it about aliens specifically, anon?
The fact that they can just take you and stick you on a surgical bench and toy with you, while being absolutely helpless and at their mercy.
That and the mystery behind their motive has always creeped me out.
Close Encounters still scares the shit out of me lmao. The ending was never a good one in my eyes. as a kid I remember hoping the main character was unharmed in their space ship while staring up at the dark ceiling thinking about ayys
So that broadcast happened in 1938. You expect me to believe your some 80yr old on Cinemaphile? Kys larping gayet
Everyone knows you could never listen to it again after 1938.
He probably listened to it on tape like I did in the 90s
Harryhausen's aliens were so much better.
do they defeat the aliens by pressing their eyes in the right order?
kek
does anyone know if spielbergs version went through some revions
the first half of the movie is just perfect but when his son wants to join the battle on the hill it falls apart.
especially the happy ending with the son betrays the darker original set up of the movie.
i feel like with a few rewritings all those problems could have been solved. like have the family join an army convoy tasked with protecting civilians and the son decides to enlist, while cruise tries to talk him out of it the convoy gets attacked and cruise has to leave with his daughter
Spielberg likes his happy endings so I'm sure that's how it was meant to be from the start.
i like happy endings too
I don’t know. It’s rare to see a film fall apart so spectacularly in the 3rd act. Everything before that is some of the finest horror ever put on film
I've read some things that the studio was unhappy with how long he was taking to make the movie and how big the budget was getting, so he was forced to rush the ending and cut a lot of unfinished scenes. I have no idea how true that is, but it certainly seems to be the case. The basement scenes drag on forever and kill the pace, and then the movie just sprints to the finish without much thought or care. Either that, or he just wanted to be done at that point and didn't give a shit.
MUY BASADO HOMBRE
This and it isn't close
Nothing beats Richard Burton's rich baritone voice.
For me, it's Brave New World.
Forever Autumn automatically makes this the best. Literally no competition.
>he has a tripod at his concerts that shines a bright as frick spotlight on random people in the audience
based.
God bless the HMS Thunderchild.

THE CHANCES OF ANYTHING COMING FROM MARS ARE A MILLION TO ONE HE SAID
THE CHANCES OF ANYTHING COMING FROM MARS ARE A MILLION TO ONE
BUT STILL, THEY COME
Best overall: Jeff Wayne's Music Version of The War of the Worlds
Worst overall: 2019 BBC adaptation
Best film: 1953 film
Worst film: Pendragon Pictures 2005 film
Best fighting machine design: Spielberg 2005 film
Best Martian design: 1953 film
>Pendragon Pictures 2005 film
Reminder that this movie is so bad, the studio has tried to memory hole its existence to the point where you can't even find a trailer for it
I actually have a copy of the vhs somewhere around my house
It is hilariously bad but I do like its designs for the alien machines.
Yeh das rite.
A musical of war of the worlds sounds dumb af unless it's heavy metal
Get out.
The novel reigns supreme, but the musical is not far behind.

Give it a listen.
Nothing in this world is dumber than heavy metal, except people who like heavy metal.
Worst martian design is the Great Illustrated Classics version
>Best Martian design: 1953 film
It looked vivid and charming and has great visual nostalgia value to this day. The Criterion essay about the movie (available on their site) briefly describes how they did it
There's a Canal + series too set present day.
>THE VOICE OF THE DEVIL IS HEARD IN OUR LANDS!
>THERE IS A CURSE ON MANKIND!
>da-da-da-da-da-da
>WE MAY AS WELL BE RESIGNED,
>da-da-da-da-da-da!!
>TO LET THE DEVIL,
>THE DEVIL
>TAKE THE SPIRIT OF MAN!
NO, NATHANIEL, NO! THERE MUST BE MORE TO LIFE!
SOMEWHERE
IN THE SPIRIT OF MAN
I wish Dakota Fanning and the boy would've died in the first ten minutes so that Tom Cruise could single handedly destroy every single tripod. Instead we get Cruise rescuing his daughter the entire movie
She did nothing but scream the entire movie!
This is a schizos worst nightmare made real.
ANAL
VORE
The giant butthole is just weird and looks nothing like the other Martian tech in the film.
They weren't martians. They planeted their machines in the ground long before man appeared on earth, waited until populations grew for harvesting etc. The actual aliens looked like a cross between cuttlefish and frogs.
They are Martians. That has always been the case. The tripods were buried, the aliens waited and came back, using orbital drop pods to burrow to the buried machines.
... which is, of course, the most moronic way to invade another planet.
It's like the Russians burying tanks in the Ukraine in 1945, then parachuting into the turrets in 2022.
But maybe if they had, they wouldn't have lost the war lmao
They weren't martians you frickin nob, Speilberg never said where they were from and never said they were martians.
> movie is based on a book where they are martians
> THEY WEREN'T MARTIANS
lol pay attention dumdum
based
Only real ones know this.
>the white mountains
Was Half Life 2 referencing this book in Ep 2?
The BBC adapted half the story, and then dropped it with no explanation, like the absolute frickers they are.
Damn Wells wrote this? Didn't know that. The Time Machine was pure kino.
Spielberg's but the 50s one is also good
1953 is the best overall film. One of the best Sci-Fi films of the 50s easily.
The book is the best version
Why did the tripods vaporize so many unarmed civilians at the start when their goal was to harvest humans
UUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
The version set in 1890s England that is yet to be made.
The musical version.
The novel is the best version.
The 1953 movie is the best film version. It does not shy away from us getting our asses kicked by the Martians.
Moving swiftly through the waters
Cannons blazing as she came
Brought a mighty metal War-Lord
Crashing down in sheets of flame
Sensing victory was nearing
Thinking fortune must have smiled
People started cheering
'Come on Thunder Child'
'Come on Thunder Child'
The scene with the train was kino
Guys, who bloody cares, Speilberg's 2005 movie was a big pile of steaming shit.
