The Netflix one is unironically better paced than the Tencent version, which is just a word for word adaptation. The book has a lot of repetition and drags at some points (inner Mongolia, the video game worlds).

Bro, it's only better paced because you are willing to suspend your disbelief on the timeline they are creating and the instant spawning they have, much like Game of Thrones

          >I'm on London and then I'm with cancerman on the beach
All the friend group circle through cancerman's beach like it's a fricking videogame HUB, and you have no queue on the time passing by because cancerman says "when I get worse later" and he never got any worse, one day he just falls and that's it

Netflix Wade basically took over the role of Major-General Chang, who leads the Asian branch of an organization that is a global military-intelligence alliance to investigate the scientists deaths and the terrorist organization they uncover, and ultimately the aliens.
Netflix Wade also took over a lot of things done by Da Shi, which is why Shi is just a pointless lackey in the show, instead of having a prominent role like in books.
They also have like a command center and meetings with generals from all the major world pwoers and actual conversations about things, not pulling everything out of Wade's ass.

    They're both objectively bad.

The Netflix version is Bio-Leninist progslop that compresses plot and characters for the sake of maximizing Black person girlboss moments and character drama at the expense of actually doing any hard sci-fi. They squashed an entire faction of infighting Trisolarian fifth columnists down into one character (the white b***h with BPD eyes), for what exactly? To fit more gay cancer drama pajeetcuck storyline? It's literally as coherent as Season 8 Game of Thrones, in that they think your brain will turn off and stop noticing if the CGI budget is high enough. Also: the novel series is insufferable to begin with for having one of the worst female characters in anything ever as the main character, but at least she doesn't show up until book 2. The Netslop series introduces her immediately, barely changes her at all despite changing fricking everything else, and then gives her even more of the story and screentime than she should have. D&D despise the viewers.

The Tencent version is Maoist chinkslop that at least attempts to follow the novel and mostly does, but wastes hours and hours of runtime to the Ye Wenjie cultural revolution backstory which is rendered worthless after obvious butchery by Chinese censors. Instead of wanting aliens to come and kill everyone because she got mindbroken by the horrors of communism, she's just a gay eco-terrorist like her Amerimutt boyfriend. It's laughably propagandistic. A Chinese company (the world's #1 polluter and communist dystopia) produced an adaptation that's essentially "uhh... environmentalism bad and communism not that bad actually". There's other elements, too, like the denigration of Western science and history. Mozi is shown to be wrong, but he's depicted as serious, whereas Galileo is a screaming moron and Da Vinci is a gay transvestite, and so on. Also, the Chinese language and culture is disgusting, which makes it an inherently harder watch.

    tl;dr they're both bad
    Watch Shogun.

You didn't understand her character arc at all. Removing the struggle session hardly changed anything. Her father still died betrayed by her mother and sister. Her motivations are about betrayal by people, and even her becoming the betrayer. It's about humans inherent flaws, not fricking muh commies. Fricking midwits.

Nice try, Chang, but nobody is buying it. The only reason any of that shit happens or makes sense is explicitly because it takes place in Maoist China. Turning your dad over to Red Guards isn't an "inherent human flaw", it's an inherent communist flaw.

        >Bio-Leninist progslop
        what does this mean?

It's Leninism except you replace class with race/gender. This way, you avoid the infinite dekulakization loop that always terminates communist society, because you don't need to worry about a white man becoming a black woman like you do with proles becoming bourgeois. Ideally, this means you just need to do the one dekulakization (i.e. the white genocide) and then you have your communist utopia. What could go wrong? :^)

        >Instead of wanting aliens to come and kill everyone because she got mindbroken by the horrors of communism
But that's exactly what happened, and was pretty much stated to have happened, in the fricking show and it wasn't even subtle. How moronic are you?

It's explicit in every version that isn't the Chinese Tencent version, where it's presented obliquely to the point of diverging from the source material. This is why you have morons making posts like

        >e Wenjie cultural revolution backstory which is rendered worthless after obvious butchery by Chinese censors. Instead of wanting aliens to come and kill everyone because she got mindbroken by the horrors of communism, she's just a gay eco-terrorist like her Amerimutt boyfriend.

      >e Wenjie cultural revolution backstory which is rendered worthless after obvious butchery by Chinese censors. Instead of wanting aliens to come and kill everyone because she got mindbroken by the horrors of communism, she's just a gay eco-terrorist like her Amerimutt boyfriend.

An alien fleet is on it's way to Earth to invade and conquer and kill all of humanity so they can live on Earth because their planet is stuck in a 'three body problem' - orbiting 3 different stars that make it statistically impossible to predict where the planet will go, only that eventually it will either hit one of the three stars and burn up, or be ejected out into the cosmos and freeze. There were multiple other planets in the star system that have already met that fate, and the aliens are completely aware of that.
The problem is, the aliens can't travel at FTL and don't have some scifi warp gizmo to get them to Earth instantly, so it will take ~400 years.

The invasion plan is more or less announced to the world about 50 years into the 400 years, and the story kicks off there. It's mostly about what the frick humanity does for the next 350 years while their science is broken to try to prepare for the invasion.

It does not go well, at all, for humanity.

Because despite the overwhelming odds, humanity is quite literally one of the last surviving species at the end of the entire universe in the book series.

Not true. Other species demand all matter be returned to our universe in preparation for the next big bang cycle

Yes, because the heat death of the universe has occurred and there is no longer enough matter remaining in the universe to instigate the big crunch and set off the next universal cycle. because it's the end of the universe and humanity is one of the last surviving races.
i didn't say they were THE SINGLE LAST race. there's still thousands of races left as per the scrolling message in the like 5,000+ languages it took before they saw something human or whatever the number was. but considering what happens to them and when it happens, that's a pretty goddamn massive accomplishment.

Yeah and also despite the bleak universe each book always ends optimistically. TBP ended with Wang finding the drive to try and solve the crisis despite the invasion, Dark Forest with Luo Ji optimistic that there may be light in the dark forest eventually, and Death's End with implication that a united society of aliens are seeking help to reunite everyone. Although each sequel would often undo it drastically lol.

I mean let's just say hypothetically somehow Death's End got a sequel, wonder what kind of bullshit will happen.

It's a detective story, ends with humans getting more intel about the aliens, and aliens revealing their existence to the world.
Book 2 - The whole world sociopolitical structure changes, entire planet becomes an uneasy alliance and all spending stars to get dumped into science, tech, and military, superaccelerating projects to go build space fleet, colonize the solar system and other 'far-out' tech and hare-brained strategies to win against a much superior enemy... within the confines imposed by alien interference and surveillance. Eventually politics and society start falling apart because of factionalizations and disagreements and dumping all money into military, this stuff spans centuries until alien fleet finally arrives then a bunch of shit happens.
Book 3 - Can't even begin to explain this without getting into ton of details and spoilers other than this explores the way the human and alien society interact. A bunch of shit happens over more centuries and then over thousands and millions of years.

                Because I'm bored at work:

                >Book 1
A series of scientists commiting suicides throughout the world. Investigation finds out that it's because their research has been sabotaged by AI that is sent by aliens that is coming to invade them and will arrive within 400 years (the sabotage was so that humanity wouldn't be able to advance their tech by the time the fleet arrives). And it all started because of a Chinese woman was a victim of Mao Zedong's oppression making her lose hope in humanity and when becoming the first person to contact aliens she tells them to come and she'll aid them.

                >Book 2
The world now enters a Crisis Era to figure a way to combat the ayys, they found out that the AI can detect anything except human thoughts so they appointed 4 people to come up with a solution stored only in their brains. 3 of them are high ranking politicians and such, but one of them is just a guy with imaginary girlfriend who had no idea why he was selected. But because of his status he took advantage of it dearly, engaging in lavish lifestyle and even manage to get the government to get him a woman that fits his imagination. Eventually he was forced to work so he came up with a plan and a send a signal to distant star, and then hibernates (humanity at this point are able to make functional cryostasis and it's used a lot in book 3) for 200 years. After waking up seeing as how humanity advanced massively in technology, he witness the first confrontation between the entire space force and the ayys in the form of a single probe the size of a car, which proceeds to annihilate 99% of the fleet. Humanity engages in orgies because of the impending doom. MC finds out that the star he sent a signal has been blown off and contacts the ayys, saying that there are stronger ayys out there and if they didn't cancel the invasion and helps Earth, he'll transmit the signal to their location making them both a target. The ayys comply.

What a stupidly narrow take. It's about the flaws and virtues of humans, and the complex ways they interact. Every single character does things for some human reason be it a virtue or a flaw, even the "anti-human" ones.

The book is less concerned about characters and more about long term future outcomes.
It’s good if you like that sort of thing, otherwise it’s pretty autistic as the characters are mostly just there to narrate things.

The basic plot is that in the 1960’s a disgruntled woman who’s been de-personed by the communists and kicked out of university to work in inner Mongolia uses a powerful radio-telescope to send a message into space, which is then received by aliens who immediately target the earth for conquest.

However it takes over 200 years for the alien ships to arrive as their max speed, so most of the story takes place in that 200 years of societal change and planning.
Characters from the 21st century continue through the story using cryogenic technology to appear in future events. The story continues basically until the very end of the universe.

In the third book they go into more detail about why the universe is in this state of perpetual cold war. They explain that it used to be 10 dimensional but sometime (before time existed) a “war” or rebellion began which broke the perfect original universe and started this slow degradation towards 0 dimensional collapse.

All the biggest alien empires in the books have been around for countless ages and they are the main reason why this hyper-hostile situation continues to exist.

The book ends with some vague alien group of “caretakers” messaging everyone to return to the old universe from their “bunkers” outside of space so the big-crunch can occur and the universe can reset to peaceful perfection again.

It’s left open-ended if all the bunker pocket universes were closed off or not and if the universe dies to entropy or is able to reset.

The final message for all the races of the universe seems to imply human civilization endured and was successful enough to be recognized.

Some do, this is the main reason humanity survives at all. It’s just controversial because governments don’t want humanity as a whole to give up once some human Ark leaves.

More or less the earth is doomed the instant the woman in 1960 transmits earth’s location, it’s literally only a matter of time until a bigger badder fish than the trisols finds out and destroys them at that point.

In book 3 they even state than some greater alien races were aware of earth and trisol already from that moment onward, but it was too low-priority to worry about immediately.

Even so, the eventual destruction of the solar system is implied to have been sent many centuries prior, as it’s travelling at sub light speed

Cheng Xin from book 3 is a total moron and I disliked her at first, but honestly I didn’t mind her as much later in the book.
Once you recognize her role is just to be a passive observer of events unfolding then her actions are less of an issue.

If anything her entire story is pretty funny as in the beginning when she goes to the ultra-gay feminized future she proves how worthless these feminine ideals are when they all choose her as their swordholder and she immediately fails.

Really what happens to Earth after the space ship is able to escape is irrelevant as earth is basically doomed either way from the moment it was revealed to ANY outside aliens.

      don't bother.
most of these people haven't actually watched the chinese version and if they did it's the 6 hour edit that takes out the 16 hours of filler they added to the story.
they also have maybe read the first book but certainly didn't get through the second or finish the third which is why they complain about certain characters appearing earlier than they do in the books or certain ideas/technology being out of place.
but if you're looking at this like it's going to be a 3-4 season long adaption, a lot of the major changes they're making are for the better.

anyone else, miss me with that
      >but muh oxford 5 diversity so close to teh books!!!!

bruh they already butchered the characters, themes and concepts of the first book. Sure you might get 2 or 3 more seasons, but they're gonna be pure shit so what's the point.

          >bruh they already butchered the characters, themes and concepts of the first book.
they're adapting the full series, not book by book, and if you've actually read the full series you'd be able to see where they're going with it and why (most of) the changes they're making make sense and are for the better.

Yes, creating the Oxford 5 is stupid as frick, but at this point it's just black luo ji and jin that are left. the auggie character in the books doesn't appear after book 1, and her story is pretty much done at the end of season 1.

not all the changes are good, but this series is frickign insanely hard to adapt without making it just as autistic as the books are, and that does not make for good television.

Most people seem to think the first season is good. Some people are vocal about the changes and less are super vocal about their opinions that it's awful, but those are the minority.

There's a single like...5 minute segment about 10 minutes into the first episode where the main character thats a c**t acts like a c**t to a dude at a bar, and then like 2 episodes later corrects her female friend when her female friend assumes her doctor is a man by saying "She..said it was blahblahblah" and barely make note of it.

That's about as pandering and preachy as it gets other than the multiracial cast. There's no explicit WHITE MAN BAD anywhere though, other than the one c**t main character whos entire personality is being a c**t hates the single best character in the show who happens to be Davos from GOT who is also the single most capable person in the show who is constantly right in almost every situation he's in.

there's one single line of dialog where a female character corrects her female friend on assuming that the doctor was male, and it's done in such a quick way that you don't really even notice it. It's not UHM EXCUSE ME ACTUALLY MY DOCTOR IS FEMALE BECAUSE FEMALES CAN BE DOCTORS YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS YOURE LITERALLY A FEMALE DOCTOR!, It's quite literally what I posted.
And it's not meant in a he's now a she because she's a troony way either.

This probably flew miles over the head of some simpleton midwit but Anne Hathaway was exploring otherwise irrational possibilities as tangible rather than doing things by the books. She wasn’t being a le dumb woman she was basically using imaginary numbers to try to solve a problem.

Like a couple of new characters that improve the narrative, and little subplots that also help flesh out the details through action and conversations instead of just some infodump.

              The additions improve the narrative.

There are things about the chink show that make it slow, flashbacks and stuff, but just fast forward that shit if you really have to.

Because when he dies on the botched mission, that scene has 0 emotional impact
This series is so trash that they can't even place an emotional moment in the right place

And the real fricking ending is everyone watching some fricking bugs

Brain gets found by aliens, they clone him. He basically steals the secret to travelling at the speed of light from the aliens by spending hundreds of years writing fairy tales that contain little clues in them for humanity. The aliens think it’s a popular fairy tale and that he’s a good author so they allow him to transmit the tales as a courtesy. Humanity is moronic though and doesn’t use the light speed tech for fear of them announcing their presence to the even scarier aliens who can wipe out entire systems. This doesn’t work, the solar system is basically hit by a 2D attack and compressed together into essentially a page. However it turns out that some humans developed it in secret and had a ship that could go faster then light so the second swordbearer and her assistant use it to escape the solar system before it collapses. This makes them the only humans to escape the attack but not the only humans in the galaxy because earlier in the book, a warship deserts during the war with the Trisolarans and colonises a star 12 LY away.

There is no physical law that says that the particles of rock can't spontaneously become cheese, that's hard sci fi with backed up science and doesn't make it any less cartoony to have a moon suddenly becoming a cheese moon

Just because it's explained in scientific terms, doensn't mean it can't be stupid

Can I ask what’s the stupid concepts? I guess it all makes sense to me after reading the book but my summary may have caused some confusion. Is it traveling at the speed of light, hibernating for centuries? The picture? Because that was just me oversimplifying it, it’s a 2D weapon that works by literally flattening everything in its path.

It collapses 3 dimensions down to 2, and it’s stated that originally there were 10 dimensions so the universe has already degraded massively by this point.

The universe this series is set in is basically a massive war-zone and this war has been going on for billions if not trillions of years (if the years were even countable in higher dimensions)

All the “lesser” races like humans are more or less caught in the crossfire so they have little choice but to hide or become nomads if they want to survive.

Given they can dehydrate and rehydrate I assumed they're some kind of soft bodied amphibian or octopus type creature. If they can be rolled up in their dehydrated state then they cannot have an exoskeleton or even much hard tissue at allm octopus checks out here pretty well.

It’s not as wishy-washy as it sounds, and it reads more like a sociological study of human societies through different times and trials of a far extended future.

It’s great worldbuilding, but pretty shallow characters, however this is typical of a lot of Chinese fiction imo.

A lot of characters come and go never to be seen again, but some do have their moments.
