Because Disney and Pixar have been pumping out nothing but duds for the past several years. For every decent film they do, they have like 3-4 mediocre or offensively shitty ones. The biggest irony is that this movie could've been a Disney production had they not canned the original studio that was working on it. The result is a 7/10 straight-to-streaming movie is just gets headlined is the latest in a wave of animations that are owning the Disney and their woke agenda..

The Japanese already figured this out some years ago. It isn't that anime or manga got any better in the past decade overall, but rather other industries like western comics declined in that time. No need from a corporate perspective to make anything stellar if "good enough" is all that's needed to top the heaps of trash out there. Some examples of anime and manga are exceptions, but for every solid one there are nine others that are mediocre. There's a reason why people say a one-eyed man in the land of the blind is king.

A difference between Japan and Hollywood is that Japan will cancel everything that doesn't make money. People will tell you that Hollywood is risk averse but that literally only applies to making new IPs, they are willing to continue to do any trope that's known for decreasing sales. You can't look at something like The Acolyte and tell me "Hollywood is risk averse, that's why they are doing a series about trans siths"

I'd say this is a case with the animated film industry as well, if Illumination and Dreamworks (to a smaller extent) are anything to go by. I would count the gaming industry as well, but I'd argue it's more a happy coincidence in the case of indies. Non-film indie animation, too

To be honest I think people would be harsher on it if it was in theaters but since it's just on Netflix and you got the whole "evil Disney didn't want this movie released" narrative it's getting credit it wouldn't have otherwise.

It's also guaranteed to have been another theatrical flop. It's barely cracked the top 10 on most of the sites that do Netflix viewership stats. Put a $10-20/per person barrier to entry and there's no way that would do well in cinemas.

Plus if you look at most Blue Sky films the successful ones tilted heavily international - I don't see this one doing those kind of numbers. It'd be closer to Epic box office wise and that might be generous. The only reason I don't think it'd be a Ruby Gillman level bomb is there's at least some brand recognition with the comic and Stevenson even if it's pretty weak.

Wasn't this the Shinkai where he was planning a yuri relationship but was denied so he made the love interest into a fricking chair?

        Anonymous

No. Shinkai intially wanted to have no romance at all and instead wanted to have a sisterly relationship between two girls. The producer told him that romance will help sell the movie, so he reworked the female character into Souta, made him a love interest, and turned him into a chair to minimize romance’s role in the story. Shinkai also stressed that he has no plans to make LGBT stories.

But the West is degenerate so when he said the story would be about two girls, the intervener thought he meant lesbian shit.

Fake news western media just ran with it because it fits the current political climate. Suzume was not a romance originally, and was only reworked into one at the request of the producers because “Your Name” was so successful. Shinkai doesn’t even entertain the idea of a same-sex romance in that interview.

So basically it was as gay as Luca ie. Not gay at all and is instead about family.

                Anonymous

Correct. Western media are actively working towards dismantling traditional human dynamics, portraying brotherly love between two comrades as homosexual (Nimona), while pushing male/female platonic relationships. It’s an inversion of the natural order. Japan is our last hope. I’m sure seeing a sisterly dynamic in Suzume would have been interesting, but in our current political climate perhaps it’s best not to give LGBT ideologues a single “win.”

                >Shinkai also stressed that he has no plans to make LGBT stories.

I enjoyed Your Name and Shinkai's older anime like Voice of the Stars and 5cm a lot, but his last two movies were bad IMO and they all seem like a lesser version of YN which was the first movie he had a massive success with. What was good were the side characters and the jokes, the plot itself made no sense and after running to the third or so door it started to annoy me a bit.

Not this stupid fricking bullshit with this type of character. I remember when Cinemaphile would look at a character like that and scoff at it. Now we have multiple morons who genuinely call it their waifu.

I liked this movie a lot and it's timely, considering all the fascism and fear mongering going on.
Let go of that proto American puritanism that has wormed its way into our culture. There are better ways to live your lives than propping up pilgrim propaganda.

    There are two reasons
    >on Cinemaphile
Because people here have a bias against Disney, Miles Morales and (for some strange reason) Ruby Gilman, so a movie coming out on Netflix is seen as this rebellious “give it to the man” gesture. The fact it escaped Disney cancellation makes it seem like an underdog so they use that to brag about this movie, insulting the other animation releases for not being “as good”.
    >anywhere but here
It’s a big gay movie released the same day the supreme court ruled against gays and people love that kind of content. Also the disney cancellation stuff I mentioned.
The story behind the movie has more value in these discussions than the actual movie itself.

i would need to try to sit down and piece it out, but i honestly dont even know what the ostensible message of the movie was supposed to be when she started b***hing about "kids grow up learning to stab anything that is different" but at the same time wanted to completely overthrow the government, and like destroy the walls?

The fact that people responding directly to this post can't even agree on which of Blue Sky's movies were good just shows how underwhelming they were as a studio.

If someone said which Pixar movies were good, you would get a lot of people saying Toy Story, WALL-E, Incredibles, or Monsters Inc. Anyone who says they aren't would be an outlier or purposely being a contrarian; I'm not going to say everyone here unanimously agrees those movies are good, but the agreement rate is pretty high I'm guessing.

Meanwhile, if I made a movie about Rio, Robots, Peanuts, or Ice Age, it would be split 50/50 between those who like it and those who say it has major problems.

They aren't leads or they try to hide it until the ending. Even Korra from Avatar didn't get gay until the very end of the TV series. This one starts out with handholding and part of the big conflict is that they still have feelings for each other.

From what I see there are just a lot that enjoyed it quite much. Isn't the same as calling it a masterpiece, only users on social media do this but you find that for everything. People make way too much of a fuss over this. I simply watched it because I like armor and I like men and especially men who are wearing armor and it has adult male knights so I wasn't disappointed.

Maybe it's in part because the work it's adapting was gay from the outset. You can't do a lot of "Gay thing continues to be Gay" headlines, and fewer people get pissed off because it isn't changing something established, so it doesn't get the same level of outrage coverage.

I couldn't get past the first 20~ minutes
    >medieval + sci-fi - fine, but I've sat for 20 minutes and still don't know what the knights actually do in the future so it looks goofy
    >clearly filled with regular citizens, yet use slander like COMMONER
    >the COMMONER knight who didn't give a frick and trained hard to be a knight since childhood suddenly has major insecurities about being a knight and sounds like a sissy homosexual
    >oh wait he is a sissy homosexual... and even if I weren't anti-gay, establishing a relationship early feels forced and doesn't leave much room for development
    >the way the queen got assassinated was utterly ridiculous
    >enter the dragon girl, the most obnoxious character who won't shut up and interrupts the knight for a full like 3 minutes.
All these and just the general artstyle and voice acting makes me barf. They can't even sync the sounds right, like when the COMMONER knight unsheathed his sword for the queen. It was like a stock sound that played for way too long.

      Anonymous

      >I couldn't figure out what the knights are for
They're super-police meant to protect the throne and fighting monsters. There haven't been any monsters (that we know of) for a long time, and they kinda shit the bed at protecting the throne, so there you go.
      >Why would regular citizens be against a regular citizen being a knight?
This shit becomes engrained over time. When Edward VIII decided to marry a commoner (and an American divorcee at that!) there were plenty of people against it. Crab bucket and all that jazz.
And remember Ballister isn't just a "working class schmo." He was orphan guttertrash.

      >I'm against there being a pre-existing relationship, but it's totally not that I have something against gays, I would say that if he was straight too!
No you wouldn't. It's because he's gay and you're looking for something to whinge about. "I didn't like that there was already a relationship at the start of the story" is not a sentiment you hear normal people say.

      Anonymous

The reason for why relationship was already there before the movie started is that they didn't want to spend much time on it. If it developed on-screen there would have been too many scenes dedicated to them and if anything the framing rather made Goldie think about a break-up than getting closer to MC, which makes sense. If there was no deep friendship and love before that point I cannot imagine how they would have gotten together in that scenario.
The love-related plot was the threat of two guys that were together for ages separating, which makes sense with the given context.
