Amy has tried to kill Sonic more times than Surge has. Sonic is such a pest that you get a free pass on trying to kill him.
That was just the typical gag stuff you’d find in plenty of anime and manga. Sonic’s a Japanese franchise after all. But fans took that shit way too seriously as they tend to do, rather than understand that it’s a fricking joke.

It was quite the disappointment for me after Sonic Adventure 1 & 2
Pretty much where I stopped playing the games and got over my preteen 2000s Sonic obsession autism.
Up until then I had almost all the Genesis games & spinoffs, Sonic Shuffle, the Gamecube games & Collections, and nearly a complete collection of the comic. Plus all sorts of merch and imports.
Sonic fanfics & shipping were serious business back then and I even had IRL friends to sperg with it and spent hours on forums, also perfecting chao breeding.
But Sonic Heroes just fell flat for me. Nowhere near the amount of effort the Adventure games had, but then again Sega consoles were dead.

Looking back, I think a major factor to why seeing Sonic and Amy buddying up with Surge in particular is because of the frequent comparisons the IDWverse has gotten to the pre boot Archieverse. While a good chunk of Sonic's friends in the games were initially antagonists in their debut game, the same can't be said for characters exclusive to the Archie comics. Even the few exceptions who did ally with Sonic and the Freedom Fighters like Snivley and Fiona eventually wound up betraying the heroes later on. Which helps explains why fans are skeptical about the idea of Surge and Kit, two characters programmed to kill Sonic are/will genuinely seek redemption in the comic's near future.
Yeah, there's a clear difference in how the game cast treats Surge and how the IDW cast does.
The OCs are more suspicious, while the game cast is more accepting of this sudden heel turn since they've all seen and/or done it before.
It certainly makes the OCs stand out more, especially since IDW has Redeemnic.

How capable is Blaze supposed to be in IDW? In the Rush games she's as fast as Sonic and is worthy of her own super form. But her fire powers are pretty limited and are more like flavoring to her being a speedster. She's ultimately a hero like Sonic from another world. And those games are supposed to be canon to IDW.
But in the actual IDW comic she seems to have a Human Torch tool kit, able to fly and freely manipulate fire as a projectile weapon.
So does she have both? How powerful would her Super form be when she's going Human Torch mode?

Having the hero be the insurmountable villain of the villain's story is really neat. To us he's The Hero, but to the villain he's That Guy. For them it was their Origin, to him it was Tuesday.
