Wickerman has a believable cult that was sequestered and grew on its own. Midsommar is like a staged Abercrombie & Fitch vacay of that idea.

I stayed away from this movie because I always thought it was YASSS QUEEEN shit but its actually a poignant, well shot film that deals with weak people in relationships who aren't strong enough to break it off
The metaphor was successfully delivered, it did a good job at that, as I'm sure it was the directors intended message.
But as a horror movie it utterly failed, the runtime inverse to the fear instilled until everyone in the room was howling with laughter at the final scenes... which I assume was not the directors intent.

They undersold the twist there's no sister and the cliff scene is the confirmation; open mouth smiling dead mother good, closed grim father bad 'Mood piece' and 'ambience' are dodges for suboptimal editing and structure. I thought it appealed too much to white Californians. Hereditary was much better.
Plus the mere fact Hereditary exists automatically makes it shit in your mind because you have that expectation.
If I watched Midsommar first I probably would have said it's good and I liked it, but Hereditary is better, but I watched Hereditary first which therefore ruined my perception through expectations.
It just wasn't that smart of a movie compared to Hereditary. They didn't play into her sister enough, it was more like "hey look these native europeans are weird" which they really are in real life. I wouldn't be surprised if there were still cannibal tribes in northern Europe.

Because it’s theme about it being a break up movie was fine, but if you’re going to do that it’s best to make both parties real characters, instead Aster made the boyfriend an idiot and for good measure he steals his friends paper to make him a deliberate butthole.
