It’s the fricking stupid exaggerated faces. On the left, it’s a more or less normal face, and he probably wasn’t putting any thought into it. On the right he’s thinking “do the iconic frown” face and he’s forcing it to the point that it looks like he’s mocking someone. If he’s not doing that, he’s doing the “open your mouth as wide as you can” reaction shot with dead lifeless eyes. He’s so fricking bad at acting and he only gets worse as time goes on
IIRC he had acting lessons done during the course of filming the AVGN movie, including improv classes. It didn’t amount to anything good of course, but that’s part of why everything felt off starting with Schwarzenegger Games.
Mike stopped co-writing the show with James around 2011-2012. So the vibe of AVGN changed pretty drastically. They started doing lets plays and Mike started focusing on that and his own streams instead of writing AVGN.
Also when James had kids his wife put him on a schedule that limited his work hours to almost nothing so he had to hire outside writers and editors.
