Why do so many people trash talk the Rankin Bass Hobbit and LOTR movies? Yeah I get Peter Jackson and Ralph Bakshee went for a grander scale but there's a lot of simple charm that gets swept aside because people don't like that it's a musical or that there's not enough high budget battles. Plus the music kicks ass.

Where there’s a whip there’s a way.
When there is a whip thereis a way
I'm pretty sure those movies are beloved idk who you're talking to.
People shit on the animated Hobbit movie? It was my understanding that only the RB LotR movie was the black sheep here, Hobbit's usually seen a slightly dated but charming in addition to not being unreasonably long like Jackson's trilogy.
I have never seen anyone talk shit about it at all, most discussion is it being a nice novelty.
Too bad Tolkien never lived to see any of these adaptations, because he would've hated them. He spent years getting angry at fans and other writers, you think he could've handled something like this?
Given the only one he saw was a glorified slideshow that bastardized his work beyond any recognition there's no place to go but up.
What the frick am I looking at?
>Given the only one he saw was a glorified slideshow that bastardized his work beyond any recognition there's no place to go but up.
I’m pretty sure he never saw that one, it was only shown in like 1 theater ever.
but anon, you just posted kino.
He’d be grateful that at least neither of them were Disney. He openly hated Disney movies.
That’s “too bad?” You wanted to epically troll the father of modern fantasy further?
Yeah, it’s fun. Like when CS Lewis put Santa Claus into The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe mainly to piss him off.
Fair enough. I always did enjoy that Lewis was a bit of an imp, for all his scholarly ways.
Well he was Irish
So more of a leprechaun, then
He would have murdered his family to avoid Rangs of Powah. Peter Jackson's The Hobbit would have been a grave insult but Rangz? It could not be allowed to exist.
>because he would've hated them.
He kind of hated everything
>Why do so many people trash talk the Rankin Bass Hobbit and LOTR movies?
Because they're not very good.
They're interesting and charming, but they're not very good.
I have never seen anyone say anything bad about The Hobbit. Closest is just people who aren’t aware it exists.
And the main negative thing people bring up about Bakshi’s LOTR is the rotoscoping. I think a good number of people who shit on the rotoscoping have never even watched it and have only seen clips.
Most people only say that the animation today looks weird and it does, but it's okay for 1977.
In 1978 we got Ralph Bakshi’s superior Middle Earth film so it looks like shit. To make matters worse, in 1977 we got his best film yet: WIZARDS.
>Wizards
DID WE JUST BECOME BEST FRIENDS?
Perhaps. (BTW Wizards can be viewed for free on the Internet Archive)
I wish Bakshi had been allowed to finish the trilogy, he did make a really good movie with his rotoscopes.
>he did make a really good movie with his rotoscopes.
No he didn't. Bakshi's LotR fricks up so many important details and omits so many plot points that even if it was animated perfectly, it still would've sucked.
That's the guy fron smiling friends
People like Rankin Bass’s The Hobbit, Return of the King is the one people shit on.
I liked Flight of Dragons.
>why'd they have to make the yellow wizard Asian?
It’s really more like they wanted to make an asian wizard (because they wanted to have some asian looking dragons) and then they needed a color to assign to him so they picked yellow. Which is still racist. But also, yellow is a lucky color in China that symbolizes power and prosperity, so the Magic Chinese Guy= Yellow Guy trope also sorta comes from that.
IIRC there's also a prominent Chinese wizard in one of the Dragon Knight books that Carolinus has to square off against.
Dunno about the LOTR ones, but I quite like the animated Hobbit movie. It's a bit rushed at times, but I like the unique art style and the intricate designs on the dwarvish armor.
Besides, the Peter Jackson Hobbit movies sucked ass:
>shit-faced Radagast
>moronic dwarf designs
>Lake-Town is a ridiculous shithole instead of a cozy town on a lake
>only reason Smaug spoke to Bilbo in the book was to coax him out of hiding. Bilbo has the ring off in the movie, so Smaug just looks like a dunderhead who loves the sound of his own voice
>Smaug and Sauron are both rekt 5 minutes into the third movie, leaving the 2 stupid interchangeable CGI orcs as our only villains
>film focuses on Stephen Fry and that shitty Grima Wormtongue ripoff instead of Smaug's attack on Lake-Town
>third film is just one long CGI fight scene, barely qualifies as a movie
This anon gets it
Thanks. It just drives me crazy how shit the Peter Jackson movies are, especially the third one.
It saddened me when I first got on the internet in the late 90s and discovered people don't like kitty cat Smaug. At least he was different than your typical fantasy dragon.
The animated movie is what got me into Tolkien's books in the first place back in grade school so The Hobbit film will always be special to me.
Same. I read the Hobbit repeatedly in 5th and 6th grade after watching the movie. Kitty cat Smaug rules.
Cuz rotoscoping sucks my nuts and should never be used for anything but the gimmick itself
Rankin Bass didn't rotoscope though (they just used Japanese animators). You're confusing them with Ralph Bakshi.
Shit, you're right. I had no idea there were two animated LOTR movies from different companies in back to back years.
Yeah, the whole affair is kind of a mess and for years I couldn't keep it straight either. I'm quite fond of the Rankin Bass Hobbit, but both their and Ralph's attempts at adapting LOTR don't really do it for me. Although "Where There's a Whip There's a Way" is quite catchy.
Down Down to Goblin town is a banger, too.
Yeah The Hobbit is way better than LOTR besides the songs which are still good
there's a lot of good and a lot of lame to them.
i dont know anyone other than diehard bakshi fans who think his version was better. they just respect the creative techniques he used.
I've always loved The Hobbit. The songs are great too. Very charming and comfy movies.
the art style is ugly as frick, musicals are gay, and it makes a bunch of moronic changes to the story
The changes are barely noticeable -- they just skip shit like Beorn's house.
>musicals are gay
you must have fricking despised the source material, then
>people talk trash about rankin bass hobbit
those people do not matter, they're NPCs
From my experience, most people are at least amicable to the Rankin bass hobbit.
I Love that version because it's just good fun.
Smaug's VA in the animated hobbit also just felt like he did a better job and hearing Bendydick Cumbersnatch's version just felt lacking.
Perhaps it's just childhood nostalgia from watching the animated version so many times it set unreasonable expectations.
I got to watch The Hobbit in my 6th grade reading class.
10 months later, The Fellowship of the Ring got released in theaters.
because they are animated on twos and threes.

RIP Mip
I rewatched them recently and was disappointed that despite liking it as a kid I found the Lord of the Rings film kind of shitty.
The Hobbit one is great though. More people should watch it.
>Why do so many people trash talk the Rankin Bass Hobbit and LOTR movies?
Because like Rings of Power, they travesty the source material.
