It was then the movie bombed, DC stopped being confident in the brand and slowly it became less prevalent in DC. At one point in time it really was like the 4th pillar of DC. Then Harley Quinn took it's place...then Nightwing took HQ's place and here we are now where the GL brand can barley get one book.

well harley quinn actually had organic appeal but gl (and a bunch of the other old heroes) just seem like they forced to be big rather than the audience choosing them

        Anonymous

In the comics, the growth of GL from a single book into a line of 3 or more books was an organic thing that grew out of a lot of popular stories. Whatever we say about Geoff Johns now, things like Sinestro Corps War were huge back in the day.

Then the movie failed and after Johns moved on to other books DC just de-pushed GL like the fault was with the character rather than the movie. Even when they put star writers on the book they're just not managing to revitalize it.

10 years ago they were pushing it with 4 Earth Lanterns. Now they're just adding more Lanterns every week for demographic appeal, I want to be a fly on the wall at the meeting where the Guardians decide Earth needs an eighth Lantern who is trans and a ninth Lantern who is a single mom

is right about them just diluting the brand even further in the 2010s with pointless additional human Lanterns, who don't contribute anything of value but can't be killed off, as well. Like Star Wars, the idiots in charge think people want to see representation characters more than they want to see cool aliens.

What I like about the GL fandom is that they're leave in masse if a run is shit like what happened with the Thorne run. You will never see that happen with Batman or Spider-Man comic.

In terms of content, if not sales, big 2 comics would be so much healthier if the audience for every book just collectively noped out like that every time a writer sucks that badly. Big franchises like Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men get writers and editors who think they never have to course-correct because the audience will keep buying anything.

I think Teen Titans took the place as the extra DC property to constantly reuse. They had multiple shows, a live series, several animated movies, and the Titans characters are constantly being pushed like Cyborg in JLA.

Because DC thinks that even though Warner Bros fricked up the movie, it's somehow the IP's fault (they conveniently ignore how popular Johns's run was and how it pushed GL to become the 2nd most popular DC franchise in the 2000s) and not the incompetent people involved with producing the movie. Because of this failed movie, the whole IP got fridged while on the comics side, no one knew what to do after Johns left.

Teen lantern seems kind of sidelined now that her glove blew up in the last run. Simon did not make any appearances of any kind in any book or major event for something like 2 years before Thorne put him into the front of the last GL run, which failed miserably.

I like Jessica a lot, and Simon is cool with the right writer. Both felt fresh and unique when introduced. Teen Lantern is Bendis shit and is best left forgotten. Jo overlaps way too much with Jessica, Simon, and John for my taste. Up to her each Earth lantern was able to feel unique but Jo takes a lot of elements from those three and it just makes her forgettable. Especially since they all do those elements better. Jess's anxiety plot is better handled, John and Jess are both better military Lanterns, and Simon dealt with racism better.

DC doesn’t push the space opera warring factions element of the property. I’ve always asked this myself. You have the makings of a great space opera franchise but they do nothing with it. It also doesn’t help adaptions of GL are allergic to using constructs to their fullest potential and instead opt for generic beams.

What the franchise needs is an auteur like Nolan or Gunn to make a movie that downplays the capeshit elements and goes full on Mass Effect

        Anonymous

Okay, maybe not them then. Something like Mass Effect, Star Wars, hell, even The Expanse (a really good space politics show between differing factions) are proof that space operas can work. GL books should be used to develop the DC cosmic landscape beyond Rann-Thanagar, Fourth World, and other one-off alien planets like Tamaran or Czarnia. The GLs have a literal universe to play with and under a competent writer, we could have so many interesting factions and civilizations to set up for compelling stories. GL was at its best when Johns turned it into Star Wars, so why not lean into the GL's space setting and take advantage of it?

A show where we visit different planets to track down different criminals, resolve local conflicts, and investigate mysteries all while getting an understanding of the alien culture, has always been appealing to me. I liked the GL animated series for this and the Mass Effect side missions where you investigated what Cerberus was doing on different planets. It's such an easy idea (that's also been done in GL media and other media ffs) and yet somehow DC fails to see this.

But I will say Booster wasn't JLU. The JLI in general had found relevancy in online circles during the early to mid 00s and DC was just trying to capitalize on it. I don't know why but JLI and Young Justice were really accessible from a piracy standpoint. You could easily find those two series for download just about anywhere.

Pure delusion. Your average movie audience knows way, way less than comics readers want to think. I would put down good money that if you stood outside any random movie theater and asked people what they know about GL, they'd have just a vague idea about a guy with a magic ring, and that's it. The idea that they'd have an opinion about the various comics Lanterns is laughable.

true most of the success of movies is based on filmmaking techniques and not the actual subject matter. Same with how that one famous author wrote a book about a single tennis match and had it resonate with his audience despite almost no one playing tennis.
