It had one movie and it was real shitty.
The cgi show also failed and it wasnt bad
It didn't fail the show had strong ratings and a lot of buzz but the toy companies and retailers wouldn't commit to a toyline because the movie was one the biggest bombs of all time.
And one of the greatest cartoon adaptations of all time.
The movie wasn't even that bad, the press just ganged up on it. It will look like a masterpiece next to blue beetle.
charisma void group, the only decent character there is guy gurdner
It was then the movie bombed, DC stopped being confident in the brand and slowly it became less prevalent in DC. At one point in time it really was like the 4th pillar of DC. Then Harley Quinn took it's place...then Nightwing took HQ's place and here we are now where the GL brand can barley get one book.
well harley quinn actually had organic appeal but gl (and a bunch of the other old heroes) just seem like they forced to be big rather than the audience choosing them
In the comics, the growth of GL from a single book into a line of 3 or more books was an organic thing that grew out of a lot of popular stories. Whatever we say about Geoff Johns now, things like Sinestro Corps War were huge back in the day.
Then the movie failed and after Johns moved on to other books DC just de-pushed GL like the fault was with the character rather than the movie. Even when they put star writers on the book they're just not managing to revitalize it.
is right about them just diluting the brand even further in the 2010s with pointless additional human Lanterns, who don't contribute anything of value but can't be killed off, as well. Like Star Wars, the idiots in charge think people want to see representation characters more than they want to see cool aliens.
In terms of content, if not sales, big 2 comics would be so much healthier if the audience for every book just collectively noped out like that every time a writer sucks that badly. Big franchises like Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men get writers and editors who think they never have to course-correct because the audience will keep buying anything.
>

People liked Jessica and her sidekick Simon.
>well harley quinn actually had organic appeal but gl (and a bunch of the other old heroes) just seem like they forced to be big rather than the audience choosing them
What are you talking about? GL was one of the best selling comics DC had because people loved it so much. The appeal was organic.
I think Teen Titans took the place as the extra DC property to constantly reuse. They had multiple shows, a live series, several animated movies, and the Titans characters are constantly being pushed like Cyborg in JLA.
Because DC thinks that even though Warner Bros fricked up the movie, it's somehow the IP's fault (they conveniently ignore how popular Johns's run was and how it pushed GL to become the 2nd most popular DC franchise in the 2000s) and not the incompetent people involved with producing the movie. Because of this failed movie, the whole IP got fridged while on the comics side, no one knew what to do after Johns left.
think about it from their perspective would you just keep making green lantern movies until theres a good one?
No, but making the hard decision that no GL is ever allowed to appear on screen again in the DCEU or CW stuff was a pretty fricked up decision.
>think about it from their perspective would you just keep making green lantern movies until theres a good one?
I think GL is too corny for live action, but would translate well into anime
This is weird, the guys at Warner blame the character concept for the movie failing, not the writer, director, or people who made the damn thing.
Attacking anyone involved means making potential enemies/pissing off the wrong person. The industry is all about relationships.
10 years ago they were pushing it with 4 Earth Lanterns. Now they're just adding more Lanterns every week for demographic appeal, I want to be a fly on the wall at the meeting where the Guardians decide Earth needs an eighth Lantern who is trans and a ninth Lantern who is a single mom
>ninth Lantern who is a single mom
Wasn't this done already?
I wonder do the other alien GLs get mad that Earth gets so many Lanterns, or do they are happy their sectors aren’t such shitholes to require that many Lanterns for one part of space.
After the close call that was Blackest Night, where the entity was found on Earth, all alien lanterns agree that 2814 needs more GLs or else everyone is fricked!
>Sector 2814 is considered the Gotham city of the universe
Always was, it's where the Empire of Tears was based too.
They need to make the GILF Asian and shota Asian boy green lanterns as canon to prime Earth universe.
Teen lantern seems kind of sidelined now that her glove blew up in the last run. Simon did not make any appearances of any kind in any book or major event for something like 2 years before Thorne put him into the front of the last GL run, which failed miserably.
Jess might have been sidelined when Thorne made her a yellow for no real reason, but no one else is paying attention to that.
>Why it never became something big as Star wars or guardians of the galaxy?
Star Wars: a variety of different and colorful characters and creatures
GotG: a varienty of different and colorful characters and creatures
Green Lantern: its just humans and they all wear green spandex
I don't know if you are baiting but there is a lot of alien green lanterns
As if they matter against the thousands of human lanterns
>thousands
And in Star wars most aliens don't matter, maybe gl needs it's own reylo to have some normie apoeal
There's only like 8 of them and no more than 4 are ever in the spotlight at one time.
>Hal
>Guy
>Kyle
>John
>Jess
>Simon
>Jo
>Teen Lantern
Alan and Jade don't count as real Green Lanterns, anyone else was temporary like Anya, or they're non-canon like Tai and his grandmother. Who should be canon so the real Jon, Damian, and Jai can be his best friends.
>As if they matter against the thousands of human lanterns
There are less humans in the GL corps right now than there are humans in the first half of the first Star Wars
They brought the black people in too early.
Green Lantern is goofy as frick. Most DC characters don't appeal to normies outside of Batman.
thats because they're so old and their powers are so generic
same with their lore
Truth. And the only way DC knows how to break away from the moldiness of its properties is to make them as bleak and edgy as possible. Which only turns normies off even more.
Does anyone give a single frick about any human GL after Kyle? I mostly remember Jessica because she was in DCSHG, not for anything else.
Jessica and Simon's buddy cop adventure was fun during rebirth.
No
Jessica Cruz is fine as frick. Jo Mullein is the only one that could have a better ass than her.
Keli is e-girl bait, but she’ll grow into her Bolivian whiskers one day, and we’ll get prime teen South American ass!
Don’t care for the males.
I liked Jessica and Baz because they were VERY well written and very fun and not just diversity for diversity's sake like Marvel was doing at the time.
Jo is a nice take but I'd like her better far, far away from earth's affairs
Teen Lantern is bendis garbage
I like Jessica a lot, and Simon is cool with the right writer. Both felt fresh and unique when introduced. Teen Lantern is Bendis shit and is best left forgotten. Jo overlaps way too much with Jessica, Simon, and John for my taste. Up to her each Earth lantern was able to feel unique but Jo takes a lot of elements from those three and it just makes her forgettable. Especially since they all do those elements better. Jess's anxiety plot is better handled, John and Jess are both better military Lanterns, and Simon dealt with racism better.
Oh and Simon and Jo also both have origins centered around 9/11 for some reason. She's such a derivative character.
Willpower is not an interesting superpower. Every superhero has willpower. DC hasn’t really been able to hit a stride with a GL in terms of characterization. There isn’t a ton differentiating them from the rest of the Justice League.
It actually is they just don't do it well look at gurren lagann for a good example
is GL the new bait or something? third one i've seen with the same premise
>bottom panel
>Green Lantern threads
No movies, no cartoons.
Jess thread? Jess thread.
>Posting Jess in name only
NO DCSHG FAKE JESSICA ALLOWED
How about this Jess?
She is okay. She actually acts like Jess.
the hottest one
>guardians of the galaxy
Most normies didn't know or care about GOTG until the movies came out.
gunnsama I kneel
They had one chance, ONE CHANCE with that movie. The fact that they’re giving Gal Gadot a third WW is insulting as frick. And now Hal is left to star on a shifty HBO show produced by fricking Tom King.
>a third WW
debunked
They just aren't as interesting i guess, multi coloured ring people all doing different ring things
The rings are just vehicles for characters. Sinestro is one, if not the best antagonist DC has, who carried by his strong will and demanding presence that you will forget that he’s wielding a power ring.
They really just made too many characters. They should kill some off. Or at least make their powers more distinct.
Except GL is always at its worst when it purges the expanded cast. Most of the expanded cast don't need to appear often, they're just doing their own thing in space on adventures. They don't need distinct powers either it's about their characters not their powers.
DC doesn’t push the space opera warring factions element of the property. I’ve always asked this myself. You have the makings of a great space opera franchise but they do nothing with it. It also doesn’t help adaptions of GL are allergic to using constructs to their fullest potential and instead opt for generic beams.
What the franchise needs is an auteur like Nolan or Gunn to make a movie that downplays the capeshit elements and goes full on Mass Effect
>What the franchise needs is an auteur like Nolan or Gunn to make a movie that downplays the capeshit elements and goes full on Mass Effect
But I hate those guys and their movies.
Okay, maybe not them then. Something like Mass Effect, Star Wars, hell, even The Expanse (a really good space politics show between differing factions) are proof that space operas can work. GL books should be used to develop the DC cosmic landscape beyond Rann-Thanagar, Fourth World, and other one-off alien planets like Tamaran or Czarnia. The GLs have a literal universe to play with and under a competent writer, we could have so many interesting factions and civilizations to set up for compelling stories. GL was at its best when Johns turned it into Star Wars, so why not lean into the GL's space setting and take advantage of it?
man I woulda taken a police procedural with a shiny coat of green paint but the hbo show wants to do something else
A show where we visit different planets to track down different criminals, resolve local conflicts, and investigate mysteries all while getting an understanding of the alien culture, has always been appealing to me. I liked the GL animated series for this and the Mass Effect side missions where you investigated what Cerberus was doing on different planets. It's such an easy idea (that's also been done in GL media and other media ffs) and yet somehow DC fails to see this.
Some of my favorite parts of Johns' and Tomasi's run were the early parts where they were fricking around with the spider guild, Ranx the living city, and the Ran Thanagar shit.
>It also doesn’t help adaptions of GL are allergic to using constructs to their fullest potential and instead opt for generic beams.
well that would actually require creativity
>It also doesn’t help adaptions of GL are allergic to using constructs to their fullest potential and instead opt for generic beams.
Justice League/Unlimited is one of the worst thing to happen to the Justice League.
(OP)
Hal has literally never been likable to anyone but power level morons and sadly he's the face of the series. Honestly they should lean into marketing him to Black folk and hispanics instead of making more brown lanterns since they're the primary audience for that sort of thing.
It's the only reason characters like Booster Gold, The Question and like half the League are even known about
>It's the only reason characters like Booster Gold, The Question and like half the League are even known about
Wow... it's literally nothing.
>Honestly they should lean into marketing him to Black folk and hispanics instead of making more brown lanterns since they're the primary audience for that sort of thing.
You’re mistaking GLfans with Bengays.
Perfect example of Black person tribalism in action. Seriously, just give Hal like a brown girlfriend or something.
he can have jessica
He can have Jo.
>I think Teen Titans took the place as the extra DC property to constantly reuse.
And it sucks because the Teen Titans haven't been good since 1985. Goddamn that shitty 2003 cartoon and all it spawned.
Teen titans was a totally dead and buried nothing property in 2003, that it was a really weird choice to bother making a cartoon out of it at the time.
In 03 young Justice was doing really well, and Titans were replaced by some odd team with a ninja and two winged people and I think a gold guy. either way the book sucked.
>Teen titans was a totally dead and buried nothing property in 2003, that it was a really weird choice to bother making a cartoon out of it at the time.
Probably wouldn't have gotten its feet off the ground had Glen Murakami not been involved given his work with the Timmverse.
>It's the only reason characters like Booster Gold, The Question and like half the League are even known about
i will not stand for this BATB erasure
That came afterwards and people having interest in them from JLU is probably why they appeared there
Yeah Question was even popular enough from JLU for DC to print trades of the 80s series at a time where they really weren't doing regular trades for older releases.
But I will say Booster wasn't JLU. The JLI in general had found relevancy in online circles during the early to mid 00s and DC was just trying to capitalize on it. I don't know why but JLI and Young Justice were really accessible from a piracy standpoint. You could easily find those two series for download just about anywhere.
We're talking about with normies, moron
Normies do not care about Booster Gold.
>What the franchise needs is an auteur like Nolan or Gunn to make a movie that downplays the capeshit elements and goes full on Mass Effect
That sounds fricking atrocitus
Honestly I think a GL adaptation that adapts Johns' run up until Blackest Night could have mass appeal. They just fricked it up the first by making it look as non-appealing as possible.
>until Blackest Night
You need Brightest Day to finish it off.
To me Brightest Day isn't really a GL event. Just an excuse to bring a bunch of people back to life.
Why the frick do you care what casuals think?
>Oh no, the cool thing I like isn't watered down and memed to death!!!!
Frick off OP
>The Nova Corps are better
The Nova Corps would get their shit rocked by what the GL face.
Delete every Earth GL after Kyle.
Nah, Jess and Jo can stay because they have fat asses.
>Jo can stay
Her ass is fat. I don't have to explain myself.
depends on the artist
Green Lantern is just one of those really comic book things that's easy for comic nerds to find cool but just seems goofy as frick to people outside the circle, like Modok or Doctor Doom or robin in general. You can still adapt them but you need self awareness.
Why did two threads trying to start shit about Green Lantern get made within the same 30 minutes?
it was popular all along
They're space cops in the era of "ACAB" and "ZOGbots"
They fight actual space authoritarian.
When am I getting my GL/CM crossover?
he'd probably just plow her
"Normies" as in the non-comics reading general audience? I guarantee you that they're not even aware that there is more than one Green Lantern if they know the character at all. Maybe the people who grew up with the DCAU would know there's a black one and a white one, but that's it. The idea that non-comics readers would have anymore knowledge than that is pure delusion.
Homie, we’ve had cartoons and video games since JLU. The capeshit audience know GL.
>The capeshit audience know GL.
Pure delusion. Your average movie audience knows way, way less than comics readers want to think. I would put down good money that if you stood outside any random movie theater and asked people what they know about GL, they'd have just a vague idea about a guy with a magic ring, and that's it. The idea that they'd have an opinion about the various comics Lanterns is laughable.
Hey, GotG proved you don’t need the audience to know what the frick they’re watching to have a good time.
true most of the success of movies is based on filmmaking techniques and not the actual subject matter. Same with how that one famous author wrote a book about a single tennis match and had it resonate with his audience despite almost no one playing tennis.
Because every time a GL appears on screen, they are worthless and need Superman or Batman to save them.
>Bland and Samey.
With some exceptions (e.g., Superman Exile) DC cosmic created by anyone not named Kirby is shit.
I also think people who want to watch cop shows and shows about space heroes are two different demos.
>Why it never became something big as Star wars or guardians of the galaxy?
because the face of the green lanterns, hal, is a notorious lover of any girl under the age of 18
They retconned that shitty Steve Englehart era of GL.
>Frick an alien that's actually hundreds of years old
>morons cry she was only 17 years and 364 days old
What I like about the GL fandom is that they're leave in masse if a run is shit like what happened with the Thorne run. You will never see that happen with Batman or Spider-Man comic.
You guys now remember that Geoff is half Lebanese
