It's as simple as listening for a slight pause
There's: >Spiderman, which would have no pause at all between Spider and man--like Batman or Superman >Spidermin, which is just Spiderman said fast >Then Spider-Man, which has a slight pause between Spider and Man.
Literally because people might’ve otherwise confused it with Superman. Both start with s and end in -erman, with a p in there and the same number of syllables. It was just to make sure there wouldn’t be any sort of error there

I was reading the 2004 run of marvel age Spider-Man and funny enough there was a bit where he was specific about the hyphen
How do you pronounce the hyphen? Do you put a pause between saying "Spider" and "Man?"
I swear to god i've seen JJ go on a rant and say SPIDER-HYPHEN-MAN
Such cringe art and dialogue. What a shit run.
Marketing.
