"Why are people watching long running tv shows that are still airing new episodes" is a very different question from "Why are people mostly watching old shows". It is dishonest to conflate the two.

        israelites ruined television and films.

I always use this picture as a simple shorthand because even the most goose-stepping /misc/tard must grasp that these men are NOT equivalent and something terrible has happened

Do people actually believe that bullshit story Spielberg tells about how he would break into hollywood studios so much that they got fed up and gave him a job? You think life works like that and his parents didn't tell some Hollywood person at their local synagogue that their son needs a job?

Abrams is even worse and only has a job because of Spielberg. When he made Super 8, Spielberg himself deemed him his successor and passed on that israeli nepotism he was given. Same when he made Shia Labeouf a star. Same when he gave that Solo actor a job.

The idea is effectively heroic capitalist investment. ie these are profitable systems, so why not impose some rules where you can also make money while solving environmental and social injustices at the same time? This allows the rich bankers to feel they're part of the solution rather than the problem.

However, it turns out that one aspect of diversity mandates is the hiring of unqualified morons who want to do nothing but activism. Which in turn results in your company collapsing slowly from within. So it loses money so Vanguard pulled out.

I'm of the moderate mindset that investment firms should just do investment firm shit, and leave everything else to government regulation and charities.

I hadn’t seen Grounded For Life for quite a while and ran across it somewhere. I used to love that show as just background. I put it on and couldn’t get through five minutes because of the obnoxious laughter. Never noticed it before.

Bait-and-switch. They know lots of people hate woke crap so they try to draw you in with a low message first season and hope you're too invested to stop watching when they let their freak flags fly.

I mean unironically that is exactly what they’re doing. Season 1 is actually interesting with a likable cast and none of those tiring agenda pushing pitfalls that you’re sick of seeing every time you turn on the TV. Then season 2 hits and they figure they can start jamming as much pozzed shit in as the can manage and they’re banking on you being too invested in to watching more after already wasting 10+ hours of your life on the only good season you’ll ever get

I admit I fell for it with The Boys. Season one was decent. Then season 2 I could see the cracks forming and season 3 went full moron with muh wife’s son and Soldier Boy being worse than a genocidal insane Superman because he might have been racist one time allegedly. Didn’t watch the dumbass spin-off. Wont watch season 4. At this point I don’t watch any new show on release, I wait for the second season to come out and see how that’s getting reviewed

I’ve been watching a bunch of shows around the globohomosexual tipping point. It’s amazing how many of them have a really good first season, and then season 2 they instantly have to shove in as many Black folk as possible.

I will always hold a special place of contempt for this show because miraculously, bizarrely, against all odds, in spite of being a living catalog of "woke" stereotypes, the first season still wasn't woke. In fact it can be used to define that nebulous fricking term.

          Season 1:
          >the black girl's plot is about her fear that she's a fraud and her husband doesn't truly love her beyond her fame and fortune
          >the gay guy's plot is that he's a criminal drug addict that sincerely wants to be a better person that his siblings can count on in spite of his incredible frickup nature
          >the Mexican guy's plot is that he's a murderously angry vigilante, Dexter or Rorschach-tier because he does heroic things but he does them because he fricking HATES evildoers more than he actually cares about innocents
          >Ellen Page's plot is about how she's written a bestselling tell-all book about their shitty childhood and everyone in her family resents her for it

          Season 2:
          >the black girl's plot is about how hard it is being black and how much the world discriminates against her for it
          >the gay guy's plot is about how hard it is being gay and how much the world discriminates against him for it
          >the Mexican guy's plot is about how hard it is being Mexican and how much the world discriminates against him for it
          >Ellen Page's plot is about how hard it is being a lesbian and how much the world discriminates against her for it

the reason this happens is because the first season is often a passion project from the creator that they create as a semi-self contained story with a little open ended-ness for another season. Then when it becomes successful due to being orignal or good, the studio takes over and you give it the hollywood writer treatment and unless the creator is strong willed with a strong artistic vision for the show, they usually get swept up in it too and allow all of the woke bullshit to creep in through the writers room as more writers are brought in to the show.

Do I like Star Trek twice as much? Yes, but that's not really the point. I can't watch more Fallout because it does not exist. A streaming show with five seasons is literally half the length of a 90's show with 5 seasons. There is no catching up. That's why these articles are misleading. yeah i'm fricking sick of "movie but extended and with filler and more side plots thrown in"
Chernobyl was a great miniseries. That used the format to great effect.

The Last of Us was a plodding mess. Rings of Power was a plodding mess. Some of these episodic documentaries they put out are constantly repeating themselves or re-using footage as if they expect people to be watching it weekly and needing reminders. Most concise and interesting documentary i've seen in a long time was the boogie one that some youtuber made.

It really is fricking baffling isn't it? I'm currently rewatching SG-1 for the first time in 7 years and I'm fricking astonished by how well it fills out. Despite being episodic it almost never feels like time is wasted, nearly every episode is telling a complete, well-paced story that's either highly relevant to the overall plot or elaborates on a character or concept, and the ones that aren't are usually still at least highly entertaining fluff (just finished Window of Opportunity... god DAMN seasons 3 and 4 were tight)

The more I compare old films and television to new, the more I'm convinced it's got to be the prevalence of studio executives micromanaging: Talented writers and character actors and animators and effects artists and so on are all still obviously out there, but it seems like fewer and fewer of them are finding their way to a position where they can actually contribute to modern media.

Again, it takes zero extra time. My client auto-prioritizes based on episode order and it takes literal seconds to download an episode, which I can watch as it downloads if it's still somehow taking too long. By the time I'm done with the first, the rest are done. I don't even understand how to argue against you because you're just making up random nonsense to spout off.

no point trying to get through to zoomers they're morons. You can literally set up sonarr to auto-download new episodes as they release and stream them as they download. The truth is that they're intimidated by torrenting because it seems complicated and hard to them. Similar to how coding intimidates people who dont know anything about it. So they get the fox and the grapes going and pretend like streaming at 1mb/s bitrate on some ad ridden website is better.

people mostly watch tv shows as comfort noise. Its just background sounds they can have to allow them to not feel so lonely and bored. Modern shows are made to be standalone miniseries with zero rewatchability because it lends best to the streaming platforms' structure and platform. So you get lots of relatively high budget, high concept miniseries only designed to be watched once. But old tv like friends or the simpsons is designed to be that friendly background noise partly because it was aired on live television and would have people tuning in for maybe one episode per week or month. Its comforting, you can tune in to any episode and just kind of half pay attention and get that warm fuzzy feeling and still be entertained. It also takes very low amounts of time to be sunk in per episode because they're all like 20-30 minutes long as opposed to longer 45-1hr30 min tv episodes these days. They're easier to digest and dont require concentration. Watching 9 hours of episodes where you need to pay attention and understand what is happening is mentally draining. Watching 9 hours of futurama isnt because you dont even really need to pay attention. That is why old tv is more rewatchable and why people still watch it more. Its like comfort food in entertainment form.

      Anonymous

to add to this the modern equivalent now of this comfort food television is youtube shit. 4 hour long game reviews, podcasts, whatever. People arent watching them because they're sat there listening to every word of a 8 hour pokemon review. Its comforting, familiar background noise revolving around a subject or person people are fimilar with and takes even less concentration than non-continuous cartoons like the Simpsons, looney tunes etc to watch. Its low effort, comfort food entertainment.

Companies usually have long term plans to coast off residuals of previous properties, but what happens when you have over a decade of unprofitable, unwanted media?

Genuinely woke-ism has gone too far. It's too annoying. I don't think you can play a single modern TV show without some interracial couple being thrown to the forefront. I'm not even racist like that usually but it's so cookie cutter now that it's just annoying and boring to see the exact same thing everywhere.
Hollywood also casts ugly people for 80% of roles these days in part of their woke agenda which is simply not pleasant to look at most of the time.

I used to be a liberal. What converted me away is that liberals don't have the ability to say no to a group who claims they are marginalized. At some point you have to say no but they can't. You can't convince me that cutting off someones dick and calling a wound a vegana is normal or sane and not medical malpractice.

Read sociologist Musa al-Gharbi who critiques it from a sociological standpoint of a political moderate of Afghan descent.

          >However, as a function of the increased social capital at stake when accusations of racism are made, and the diminishing opportunities to leverage that capital by “calling out” obvious cases of racism – the sphere of what counts as “racist” has been ever-expanding – to the point where it is now possible to qualify as “racist” on the basis of things like microaggressions and implicit attitudes. One particularly unfortunate aspect of this concept creep – justified under the auspices of empowering people of color – is that relatively well-off, highly-educated, liberal whites tend to be among the most zealous in identifying and prosecuting these new forms of “racism.”

          http://web.archive.org/web/20210630213632/https://musaalgharbi.com/2020/05/15/definition-racist-actions-actors/

And he talks about Columbia students wanting time off after Trump won, then turning around and ignoring workers who showed up to their jobs. They were invibible to them.

modern shows are more and more becoming longform content that is no serialized and requires attention and watching every episode
compared to something like seinfeld or cheers where you can pick any random episode and watch it and not be lost on whats going on.

as a result it's much easier to just throw on 10 seasons of a show that has 22 episodes that you can have as background noise as opposed to putting on Haunting of Hill House or some shit. also as i just pointed out those old shows have 100+ episodes to go through, some of them into the 200s or even 300s. new shows have like 12 a season at most and are done in 2-5 seasons.

I'm 37 and work from home around 60 hours a week, and have been doing so for almost 20 years.
Sometimes you're just doing mindless work that needs to get done but isn't taxing so you want something in the background to half pay attention to so the days go faster.
Sometimes it's music, sometimes it's podcasts, sometimes it's old tv shows from before the 'golden era' where everything turned into LOST or Breaking Bad with it's continual story arcs, sometimes it's the entire Arrowverse or all of Supernatural because frick it why not.

Yea those things you mentioned make sense except for shows since they are a visual medium. Seeing people describe shows as "noise" is very dystopian.

background noise has historically been music. You have people over you put music on in the background. Putting shows on, a visual medium makes no sense and describing it as "noise" is just sad like how youtubers boil down what they do as "content". It's like if I was a chef and decided to rename myself as a "Protein and Carbohydrates Combiner"

It's 2024 most people have multiple monitors or an extra pad or whatever. It's not hard to do one thing while having some show or something playing on a different screen next to you.
That's literally what this thread is talking about, how older shows like the office or whatever are easy background noise you don't need to be focusing on 100% to follow along.

I have a 4 monitor setup while working and only use 3 of them at all times for work. The 4th is generally for online meetings or a viewscreen for movies/tv shows.
Also, you really don't need to WATCH every second of a show like NYPD Blue or Cheers or Fraiser. Glancing up once or twice every 20-30 seconds while the rest is in your perphrial won't change your enjoyment much.

The writers' union wants a set minimum amount of writers per episode and this is a key reason that seasons are so short. Before you had 1-2 writers per episode plus a singular overall writer for the season.

If you did 22 episode seasons now you'd need hundreds or thousands of writers, and it wouldn't work out. Imagine the amount of residuals they'd have to spend?

And yes, the minimum amount of writers results in a slew of fat morons in the writing room. It's a way to sneak in diversity quotas.

It would help if they used a system where they released episodes weekly. That way you don't binge watch a show, but instead it becomes a cultural phenomenon that grows over the course of a few months.

Also they should have mini-channels and subscriptions. Channels for styles of content. Hit the "Romcom" channel, and it's a selection of romantic series. And you can just subscribe to studios and series like youtube and then check your subs for new episodes.

they are starting to do that more and more. Shogun was released weekly despite being finished and ready to push out from day 1.

The netflix season binge release model is beginning to die out i think as companies get wise that audiences lose interest quickly if the show is available to them quickly. It stays in the public psyche for less time as people arent invested in the show any more until the next season, which is years away.

The netflix model seems to work really well if its a one-off miniseries because it can be watched in one afternoon but it obviously is making less of a cultural impact than TV shows did when people were tuning in weekly and the show was staying relevant for years on end.

Season 1 took 6 years to create. I don't understand why people expect them to be able to shit out season 2 in 1-2 years.

yeah, they'd ruin it by hiring millennial and gen-x writers who are all twitter addicts. You need to get away from the problem.

But the first thing is that such a show would immediately come under fire for various -isms immediately.

Because it's older people watching them for nostalgia. Younger people are too busy watching tiktok

it's not just that lol gen z aren't these supermutans you guys all think they are. They're depressed and lazy and dumb like anyone despite what shit like tiktok makes them seem and they love sitting around watching shoes.
The problem really is that all the female writers have basically fricked it all up and new shows/movies all just kinda suck now.

It's like every single meal has been turned into a good enough frozen cooked meal.

All the shows that still feel like syndication era shows are from Korea, Turkey, India and Hispanic countries.

There's not even any cultural relevance to any streaming show. You're not involved in any conversation after having watched any of it.

I don't have any streaming service since I pirate, and I have an adblocker. So few people are talking about most new shows, even on here, that I haven't even heard about any streaming only shows since, like, Voltron.

Funny, this is also true of video games. Literally nobody is actually in favor of the low effort girlboss trannified garbage that is being shoved onto society from every angle.

If you actually look at that list though it's all a bunch of live service games like Fortnite, GTA Online, Minecraft, LoL etc.

Which makes sense. After you've played the handful of 15-20 hour experiences a year that you're interested in you have to fill the gaming void with something.

Most of everything is old and is easy to watch it. Older stuff is EVEN easier to watch than new shit because they will charge you money for a lot of new shows/movies
    >100 years of film / tv shows
    >1 year of MODERN shows

I'm watching Alias with my wife, it's not a great show but it's decent. Her work partner and her best friend are black and we're 1.5 seasons in and their color has never been mentioned.

When should I stop? End of season 2?

First three seasons are solid. Then the creator started working on LOST instead and stopped giving a frick about Alias, so it turned really dull.
