Why is this causing so much seethe?

>why does the animation look worse for a direct to video than major motion picture?!?

>why does one line from the original possibly create a continuity era?!?

It's going to be mediocre, and if you still have some bizarre pure devotion to the underperforming original, don't watch...

I'm someone who's been critical about Megamind to the point I was surprised to find out it had a fandom at all.

The fandom coasted by it's self for so long and would over hype the frick out of the film. It's got it's good points but the art style and the voice acting wasn't enough to sell the movie as a whole. It's the theater kids coming out story in a way.

Now that they got what they wanted, a continuation of their favorite guy, they hate that all their head canons now just got thrown out the window. Happens every time.

Forgettable plot with a 2smart4u moment that "blew" the minds of pseudo-intellectual youtubers.
I still don't understand why a solid concept - what if villain is the protagonist in a family-friendly "satire" of funny comic books (in an era of post-modernist gritty comic book films) - was replaced with a handsome geek loves girl and ugly idiot is the villain plot.

The actual initial plot of "You were born to be rich and successful was stolen from you by some dumb jock" really died hard and then became confusing when they not only made out the jock to be a good guy but pathetic at the same time.

The spin-off shows and direct-to-streaming sequels often look worse than the movies, but not significantly enough to be jarring. This megamind thing looks fricking awful in a way that only things made by 3rd world slophouse studios look like for reasons that no one can discern. Obviously it's not going to have a feature length film budget, but why the frick does nothing about it look even remotely competent?

Why even make it of you're not going to give it the resources it needs to succeed? Why try to make a cheap kids show out of a cult classic from over a decade ago that's mainly known for the insane amount of effort put into it? Why ship it out to some third world animation sweatshop but then still advertise it like it's some big blockbuster release? Why have the promotional material done by someone so obviously disinterested/disgruntled they put the obviously low quality models front and center in all the ads?
    Why does this exist?

Out of all the possible other villains shown in the original art book why did only lady Doppler make it into the show? I know Psychodelic was too much for a kids show. (Ppg would have the balls) but where’s Destructionworker? Or Horflash? All better design choices. And lady Doppler outfit was always bad they should have fixed it!

I feel like one of the people who monkey paw'ed Megamind because, while I was happy with the stand-alone movie and the short film, I did wanted to know more about the world and other super powered characters.

This Syndrome quote is ironically accurate. Had this been made right after Megamind was made, there is a good chance it would have been... tolerable, at least.

Really, this applies to a lot of stuff lately. Companies are trying to cash in on nostalgia from a couple decades ago, but they are doing it with SEQUELS instead of reboots for some reason so they all end up in this weird in-between space where it is kids media designed to appeal to the adults instead of kids. Not every IP you own stays valuable, guys. Sometimes things miss their window and should stay dead.

I honestly don't know why my generation even worships Megamind so much, it's like a cult. I guess American zoomers were really fricking blown away by the idea of a cartoon about a villain protagonist, even if he's not really that much of a villain.

      Anonymous

I get that this is an American cartoon board and all but I always find it weird when people tried to make more of these celebrity voice cartoons than they actually were. Maybe if you actively avoided watching any anime or TV cartoons that weren't the main ones pushed the concept of characters with relationship drama and pathos is novel- but it all just felt really shallow.

It's being made in response to a cult fanbase of now young adults with nostalgia for it, but they're producing it like any of their throw away current movie cash-ins aimed at 3-7 year olds, and on a platform few people even have.

It's not worth seething at it but it's a funny move to waste money on producing a series in response to a demand, only to sell it to a completely different audience.

      This,

It's been a decade over the original movie so modern kiddies might not immediately know the original movie exists (unlike the case with most DreamWorks TV spinoffs). Also, I'm pretty sure there isn't a notably large portion of preteens who are really into Megamind and desperately want to see more of it, it's mostly teens and young adults who really clamored for more Megamind.

The only way I could see not really trying to target the cult fan base is maybe the expectation that these projects will increase viewership in the OG movie by curious kiddies and parents (the new movie and show are clearly marketed as sequels).

Shouldve revived Over the hedge instead. It would be really extra hard to frick up visuals or story telling wise. Og was 2006 so it wont be such a jarring difference in look or animation. It has a fandom just like megamind and probably would've been more grateful and receptive to anything new put out. Its bad guys but better and made a lot more $ than bad guys or megamind plus toy, game, book and apparel sales. It even got merch in japan. Plus it has anthros so furries would be supporting it. It's a lot better movie than megamind and had more room and different directions for expansion. The comics are still going and the creator really wants to revive it. The creator is serious about the characters and would've kept the writing on the rails. They even have video games they can pull shit from for a sequel or tv show. We'll have it in the next 10 years with how ai is going and now that dreamworks is paying millions to develop ai. But boy does it make me wish that they went bankrupt for ignoring oth since 2006 and putting out shit like home, turbo, orion, ruby, trolls, croods and boss baby instead.

I can handle subpart visuals, but why do the voice performances have to be bad? Why does the comedic timing have to suck? Megamind was not some high IQ comedy. It doesn't take veteran writers to do Freakazoid or The Tick kind of humor. Some good jokes with good deliveries would make it worth watching.

Instead, it's like they had fricking placeholder voices and forgot to get actual VAs. I don't get it.

I think a lot of that comes from how they took the joke of Megamind not knowing how words are pronounced because he's only read them and ran it into the ground by putting it all over the trailer.
