This is one of the first movies I ever watched and the first anime I ever watched, my dad isn't really a weeb but he is a nerd and was pretty early to the trend, as a kid I saw the HNK movie, Gits, Akira, berserk and then some other random shit like Noir, Steamboy and the Tekken movie. Either way Ninja Scroll rules, I only even got the whole wind ninja thing a couple years back when I watched it again, anime mostly looks so shit now by comparison

Which one? Isn't there like at least 5?

No concept in Naruto was original. Nothing. In fact, one reason it was such a hit in my opinion is that the ninja genre had already faded into obscurity for quite a long time when Naruto suddenly brought it back to a brand new audience who never saw it before.

it'd be nice. there's classic sci-fi that needs to be animated. like lensmen (the og anime was good but very stiff showa stuff), and buck rogers/flash gordon. and the real men in black comic adaptation.

        Dune needs to be animated.

        SOLID GOLD LIST MY homie

OVA's was the big thing in the late 80's/early 90's. Original Video Animation. It was all straight to VHS and frankly stupidly expensive. You would have to buy three tapes at like 20 bucks each and the episodes on each tape were like 45 minutes. Luckily in the west they often just edited them together as feature releses. This is why it was so violent/pprnographic. Direct to consumer, smaller niche but devoted fanbases.

god bless the weirdo 90's boomer cokeheads at my local video store for ordering so many anime videos while high and letting us kids pick shit out.

Actual answer? There was a bunch of 80 hyperviolence ovas in the 80s.
A schitzo 2chan incel did some murders and his defense lawyer said violent anime made him do it.
Japs being a collectivist boomer society shat their pants at 'today's youth' and actually banned it (not just talked about it for votes). That's why anime now censors even mid-tier violence.

Hyper violence existed but on a scale, not all movies went full gore, but they definitely weren't made for moronic babies in their minds like today. Yesterday I watched Golgo 13 (84) and it was pretty good albeit cheesy. Look on l337, there are some torrents gatherings old OVAs there.

90's and late 80's OVA needs to make a comeback.

It was an adaptation of a manga that was cancelled after a single issue, plus they ran into budget issues. The only episode that had a manga for it was Ep1, all the other episodes were based on notes for the series so it just jumps forwards in time at an insane rate. Imagine if they tried to do DBZ in 6 episodes and only had scribbled notes to go on.

It's like if one episode you were watching Goku fight Radditz and the next you were watching Vegeta die on Namek without ever being introduced. It just wouldn't make any sense. You'll get it if you watch it. In the sense that you won't get anything at all.

lol, how does something like that even go into production. I guess they really just hoped that all the excessive gore, like the scene where children get torn apart by 20 mm cannons would attract VHS sales in the future.

Because what sells nowdays is "shoujo". Which is the little girl equivalent of ninja scoll (shounen).
If you want something to blame, Spirited Away is the culprit.

      That's part of it yeah.
Another thing to consider too is OVA's were able to skip TV censorship standards. And OVA's dont really exist these days because everything has to conform to streaming service censorship.

A genre in manga/anime which is designed to provide moral instruction for young boys as they grow up into upstanding young men.

Shounen stories tend to focus on action, adventure, fighting, and personal growth.

Shounen are specifically made for young boys, but tend to be popular with fans of all ages and backgrounds because they are simple, optimistic, and endearing. Most Shounen incorporate elements from other genres such as comedy, horror, or romance to add spice to the story, further increasing it's broad appeal. Many Shounen are set in Historical, anachronistic, or fantasy settings.

Dragon Ball, Fullmetal Alchemist, Baki the Grappler, Bleach, Berserk, Naruto, One Piece, Gundam, My Hero Academia, and Demon Slayer are all considered textbook examples of Shounen.

Shounen is often criticized for being overly simplistic, shallow, and formulaic, and relying too much on battle and increasing power levels to advance the plot. Shounen is widely scorned by people who crave depravity, degeneracy, futility, and decay.

An example of "anti-Shounen" would be an anime which you don't watch because you already died of autoerotic asphyxiation in your closet.

That's not true, unless you only qualify violence as intestines and brains (with that intact eye animation trope) blowing up with 10 gallons of blood spraying for a good 5 seconds like they are being pumped from hoses.

And even then, you still have violent stuff being made.

Mature anime doesn't sell well. A child's anime can sell tons of toys and be on TV when all the kids are at home. A adult anime doesn't sell toys because adults don't buy them and the show is on late night when people should be sleeping.

There was an image of anime directors said they can't make the anime they wanted becuase the money is with the obsessive otaku market who buy figures and other merch. The animator has multiple dolls and says he likes drawing cute girls.

Ironically if things go on long enough they wn't even be able to draw or animate those older anime anymore just because they have a lack of skill and only ever draw moeblobs. It's like how western cartoons are never going back to Batman TAS or older Disney, it's now either noodle arms or CGI as they have been doing it for so long.

      >There was an image of anime directors said they can't make the anime they wanted becuase the money is with the obsessive otaku market who buy figures and other merch. The animator has multiple dolls and says he likes drawing cute girls.
the hyperviolent gorey shit was the same, it feels cool and unique now because newbie may only get exposed to the top shelf stuff like kawajiri but back then the market was over saturated with this stuff and most of it was low effort shit just aping and cashing in on the trend, it was still this industrial content mill churning out whatever was selling on the video market
