The FBI needed tony producing a snuff video and handing it to them autographed to find something to arrest him for.
Zoomers and 90s born queers are the only ones who cry about the pilot episode. Sure it had some goodfellas influences, but it establishes most of the themes and characters and was extremely high quality and revolutionary for its time. People who try and act like it's some unwatchable abomination deserve the rope.
Sure, you can always say context counts but Chase literally had no idea what he was making in the first season, and especially in the pilot. The actors also said they didn’t know if they were making a parody of Goodfellas or what. Nobody is saying the entire show is shit. Anons need to calm down.
>Chase literally had no idea what he was making in the first season,
He knew it was about a mobster who has a c**t of a mother and is struggling to deal with and balance the stress both his mob family and his home family cause him and who starts seeing a psychiatrist. The show goes deeply in to other stuff over the years but what's presented in the pilot is basically the premise for the show. The show branched off after livia died but they knew what they were trying to do. Chase said if the pilot wasn't picked up he would have tried to film another 30 minutes of footage and release it as a low budget movie.
It would be best if zoomers stayed away from the sopranos entirely. The whole thing goes over their heads, they're incapable of understanding nuance or the human condition.
>most of you can't see it.
It's just reddit Black folk and zoomers mouthing off like usual. The biggest homosexuals are the ones who say it's not canon. Don't tar the rest of us.
You're a fricking moron. Most pilots are very different from what the first season becomes. Getting a pilot made is insanely difficult so they have to craft it to make the network happy so they will put money behind an unknown property. A pilot is also usually of a lower budget than a typical episode of the TV show and the actors have figured out the characters yet because odds are this will be a one and done thing. All things considered, Sopranos is one of the best pilots ever made.
seethe more. it's a sloppy ass pilot made by someone that didn't give a frick about the show until it became popular. he admitted it himself. he didn't think it would get picked up, but would help him make movies. i love how every anon justifies the pilot being shit by saying >all pilots were shitty back then! >do you even realize how bad TV was then?
it's ok to love the show and say that some episodes are fricking terrible
>. it's a sloppy ass pilot made by someone that didn't give a frick about the show until it became popular.
Find me a few better pilots from before the Sopranos you fricking moron. Most are shit, but you can see the glimmer of hope in them. Sopranos pilot had that and more. >he admitted it himself.
Irrelevant. >>all pilots were shitty back then!
They just were. The networks dozens of pilots a year and picked what they thought was the best one. TV shows today don't have pilots, they just buy the entire 1st season right away. The only better pilot than the Sopranos is probably Mad Men and Breaking Bad, but those are post-Sopranos pilots when networks saw the potential that these quality shows could have. >>do you even realize how bad TV was then?
TV back then was better than TV today by a fricking mile.
it's hilarious that you're seething so much and going up to bat for the pilot of The Sopranos, of all things. Why defend the pilot so hard when it's obvious the show has bad episodes through out its entire series?
I could list possibly 30 pilots better than The Sopranos >Irrelevant
exactly, you don't want to take any points and admit nobody had any fricking clue what they were doing. we can both agree it was lightning in a bottle that it took off the way it did. Everyone here loves the show, but you don't have to be such an autist about an objectively sloppy episode.
>Why defend the pilot so hard when it's obvious the show has bad episodes through out its entire series?
It's not a bad episode, much better than shit like Christopher or In Camelot. And pilots are a different beast from the rest of the show you dumb homosexual. A good pilot is hard to come by. The Sopranos had a good pilot. Is it anywhere near the best ep? Not even close. But most pilots are much worse. >I could list possibly 30 pilots better than The Sopranos
Get started then, homosexual. >exactly, you don't want to take any points and admit nobody had any fricking clue what they were doing.
That's true of lots of tv show and movies you dumb moron. Sometimes everything just somehow clicks. The Sopranos pilot did that.

Post 3. Name your 5 pilots better than the Sopranos pilot.
Actually, let me guess you response >"zomg you are seething so much lolololol"
And of course not name a single pilot.
I dunno I think you're selling it short. Let's say you lived to 50 without ever seeing the Sopranos, but you've seen hundreds upon hundreds of other shows. So at 50 years old, watching Sopranos for the first time you're going to see something you never saw in the other shows: a woman pointing a gun at her own daughter whom she thought was an intruder because she was trying to sneak back in from fricking her boyfriend. Sopranos is the only show ever to have that sort of scene. I'd definitely bet good money the pilot does just fine getting people interested.
>You're trying to sell the first episode being good from something completely out of character? Like not even close to what Carm is?
A pilot is never perfect you fricking homosexual. Lots of shows post-pilot literally change actors and make other major changes. A character being "a little out of character from what they would become" is a very small complaint. Tony's voice changes radically from the first season to the last. >It was literally the "parody of Goodfellas" that the actors thought they were doing
Just because they thought that doesn't mean it's what it was you fricking moron.
Still can't name better pilots?
I don't think so. You're just one of those "newer = better" morons.

That's fair. 5 is pretty bad and a lot of it is because of the badly written Buscemi and Carm stuff. I really do like AJ in the later seasons while Meadow is basically a ghost later on

Pilots are always the worst representation of the show
They're deliberately over the top to give everyone a quick insight as to who people are, and what is going on in their world.
The first season was pretty mediocre. Part of me always believed they intended for it to be a little lighthearted and goofy because otherwise people wouldn't have kept watching i.e. too depressing etc.
Maybe they just didn't really know where the frick they were going with it at the beginning.
Why wouldn’t the guy tell Vito to stay down? Or why wouldn’t Vito realize that if he thought something was up that the worst thing he could possibly do is come up?
Why wouldn’t the guy tell Vito to stay down? Or why wouldn’t Vito realize that if he thought something was up that the worst thing he could possibly do is come up?
>Was Vito gay?
"No!" >then why suck the guy's wiener?
It was a joke >why did he he make such a homossexual joke?
Because of the medication >what does the medication have to do with it?
It changes a mans sense of humour >was he still under the effects of the medication when he ran away?
Yes >was living with the fireman a joke?
Yes >why did he leave the fireman and the happiness he had found, even knowing Phil wanted his ass dead?
Because the effects of the medication wore off >how did Vito sneak behind Jackie Jr and "nothing personalled" him?
Objects of large mass can collapse upon themselves, create black holes and teleport themselves in wormholes. Vito was a man of large mass >did Vito also teleport the car and the driver?
Yes >Could Vito have teleported himself to another place when his jokes were found out?
No, the medication made him lose too much mass >how did Vito kill Jackie Jr with a toy gun?
He didn't, Jackie had a collapsed lung, as we can see by the snow already having blood when he falls, and Vito took the credit for it. Lots of luck >why does the scene where Vito threatens Finn DeTrollio look like bad CGI?
Objects of large mass, such as Vito, can deform their surroundings due to excerting a stronger force of gravity >was Finn really his arch nemesis?
Yes. Thin. Kind of tall. Looks like Daniel Day Lewis' son. Couldn't take a joke >would Vito kill him in the Yankees' game?
No, he just wanted to make a new friend, and share some jokes >why did Phil want Vito's death so much?
Because he was a closeted homosexual >wasn't it all a joke?
No, he wasn't fat, so he wasn't on medication

There was a lot of shitting in this show
I don't like that they retconned Pussy flipping to happen in 1995
There's no way he didn't produce anything meaningful for five years and only then start to feel really conflicted about it. Wtf was he doing between 1995 and season 2 of The Sopranos?
The most logical place for the flip to happen would be an episode or two before his back pain. He wouldn't have been able to spin his wheels for that long without anyone going to jail. Jimmy lasted one fricking week.
Did the show ever explore the question of why Tony only had panic attacks every few years until 1998 when it was suddenly a weekly occurrence? This was when Jackie was still alive, his life hadn't changed much in a while.
Anxiety and depression comes in waves. Sometimes the treatment works or something traumatic will happen and put you back at square one. Tony would always think he’s fine and stop taking his meds too
Probably because the current acting boss at that time was hospitalized and he was in a position of higher responsibility. Unaddressed, but he was most definetly stressed about what he would need to do about his uncle and still hasn't formulated the puppet capo scheme.
Put the pieces together >mid life crisis >mixed relationship with kids and wife >mother getting more and more difficult as she gets older >taking on more work as Jackie got sick
>Someday soon, you're gonna have families of your own and if you're lucky, you'll remember the little moments like this that were good.
This is the most depressing line of the show and imo the entire theme of it. Tony knows his life sucks and is going to get worse every day until he dies and cherishes those little sparks of happiness that he knows are fleeting.
That's what the ducks were to Tony, and that's why the panic attacks started when they flew off. Times like that, times that were good, were getting harder to come by.
>find traces of the pillow

-Main character had an extremely cold and uncaring mother/mother-figure
-Main character's job is a boy's club where women are secondary figures
-Main character begins series in middle management and ascends to apex power by the last seasons
-Main character becomes increasingly depressed and hopeless as the series goes on
-Main character cheats on his blonde wife by constantly having not-so-secret affairs with women of a certain type (usually dark hair, mysterious, sad, moneyed.) Main character gets divorced/separated from her later in the series.
-Main character has an extremely turbulent and passionate affair with a dark-haired, swarthy woman who later dies and the main character feels a lot of regret over the way their relationship ended
-Main character confides in a middle-aged blonde woman with a bad leg
-Main character has a beautiful house and possessions envied by others
-Main character goes out west and does drugs in the final season, finds serenity
He's a detective at the end if the 14th episode for like 5 episodes.
He's in an earlier episode as a murderer, he's like a mentally disturbed limo driver that has a mental dilusion that he's in a relationship with a supermodel.
That happens alot, the guy that plays Pussy is in a bunch of episodes of a bunch of different people with different roles, like one he's just a guy the police interview to get a piece of information, then he's in the mob, then he's in the mob, then he's like in the mob, and finally I think he plays a character that's in the mob.
David Chase tried to hire Stevie Van Zandt as Tony (possibly the worst actor of the entire series). Then he tried to hire Ray Liotta and Brocco as Tony and Carm for his Goodfellas ripoff.. The dude was phoning this shit in until it somehow blew up.

Tony was hungover as frick for the pie-o-mie episode.
amine described that while shooting the season four "Pie-O-My" episode, Gandolfini and several others went out one night in the gambling hotspot.
"I am at the hotel bar when the crew member closest to Jim asks if I want to go down to Atlantic City with Jim and a few others. It’s over an hour away. I decline," he wrote in the book. "The next morning I’m not surprised when Jim cannot be roused."

>all pilots were shitty back then!
>do you even realize how bad TV was then?
it's ok to love the show and say that some episodes are fricking terrible
>. it's a sloppy ass pilot made by someone that didn't give a frick about the show until it became popular.
I could list possibly 30 pilots better than The Sopranos
>Irrelevant
exactly, you don't want to take any points and admit nobody had any fricking clue what they were doing. we can both agree it was lightning in a bottle that it took off the way it did.
The Sopranos pilot did that.
not worth responding to someone that can't coherently explain why something is so good and just seethes the entire time. you may possibly be the most autistic person i've encountered on here. I hope you aren't punching walls right now and get a good sleep, anon.
>not worth responding to
This coming from "I can name 30 better pilots than the Sopranos", yet can't even name fricking 1. Kys you worthless homosexual.
>can't coherently explain why something is so good
I literally did moron. The pilot compared to the greatness that was the Sopranos is mediocre at best, but as a pilot its a great start and a good ep. Of course you can prove me wrong by naming a few of these 30 better pilots.
losing your fricking MIND. keep refreshing the thread over this.
Yeah, I'm very calmly losing my mind as you make moronic claims like "herr derr I can name 30 better pilots", yet can't name a single 1.
>very calmly losing my mind
>autistically seethes in every post
really makes me want to enjoy this even more. if you respond three more times i'll give you the top 5.
seethes in every post
You're the moron that can't counter any logic with shit other than "I can name 30 better pilots", and yet you STILL can't name a single 1.
>if you respond three more times i'll give you the top 5.
You said 30. But ok, I'll take 5.
Post 1
Post 2
Post 3. Name your 5 pilots better than the Sopranos pilot.
Actually, let me guess you response
>"zomg you are seething so much lolololol"
And of course not name a single pilot.
Take it easy
Never been seen before doesn't mean good. It was literally the "parody of Goodfellas" that the actors thought they were doing
Season 1 is literally the best season you fricking pleb.
1 > 2 > 6 > 4 > 5 >> 3
1 and 5 are the worst. horrible fricking taste
1 is better than 5 and 6.
Nostalgia has blinded you.
I don't think so. You're just one of those "newer = better" morons.
Never would say that. I like season 1, it's just at the bottom of much better seasons. Season 2 is almost just as old but way better than the majority of seasons.
>I like season 1, it's just at the bottom of much better seasons.
I would still take 1 over 5 and 6. Too much bullshit in later seasons with AJ, Meadow, Carmela spec house, among other things.
That's fair. 5 is pretty bad and a lot of it is because of the badly written Buscemi and Carm stuff. I really do like AJ in the later seasons while Meadow is basically a ghost later on
ofcourse, chase made the pilot, the show was better the less he had to do with it
Frick off the first episode was great.
>the first episode is so shit. sometimes i'm shocked that people become fans of the show nowadays and don't give up during season 1
I did lol took me over a decade to actually get past s1 especially ep1
>the first episode is so shit.
The first session with Tony and Melfi is pure kino in terms of acting. Frick you.

Mobster with mommy issues vs the FBI
We’re kinda lucky Nancy died and melfi did 911 so they could get away from where that was headed
The show hadn’t found its humor yet
Why wouldn’t the guy tell Vito to stay down? Or why wouldn’t Vito realize that if he thought something was up that the worst thing he could possibly do is come up?
what did you go to gay school or something?
Timing is everything in comedy
>Was Vito gay?
"No!"
>then why suck the guy's wiener?
It was a joke
>why did he he make such a homossexual joke?
Because of the medication
>what does the medication have to do with it?
It changes a mans sense of humour
>was he still under the effects of the medication when he ran away?
Yes
>was living with the fireman a joke?
Yes
>why did he leave the fireman and the happiness he had found, even knowing Phil wanted his ass dead?
Because the effects of the medication wore off
>how did Vito sneak behind Jackie Jr and "nothing personalled" him?
Objects of large mass can collapse upon themselves, create black holes and teleport themselves in wormholes. Vito was a man of large mass
>did Vito also teleport the car and the driver?
Yes
>Could Vito have teleported himself to another place when his jokes were found out?
No, the medication made him lose too much mass
>how did Vito kill Jackie Jr with a toy gun?
He didn't, Jackie had a collapsed lung, as we can see by the snow already having blood when he falls, and Vito took the credit for it. Lots of luck
>why does the scene where Vito threatens Finn DeTrollio look like bad CGI?
Objects of large mass, such as Vito, can deform their surroundings due to excerting a stronger force of gravity
>was Finn really his arch nemesis?
Yes. Thin. Kind of tall. Looks like Daniel Day Lewis' son. Couldn't take a joke
>would Vito kill him in the Yankees' game?
No, he just wanted to make a new friend, and share some jokes
>why did Phil want Vito's death so much?
Because he was a closeted homosexual
>wasn't it all a joke?
No, he wasn't fat, so he wasn't on medication
would have been better if it was just for his blood pressure. MAY CAUSE DELIRIUM

Jimmy lasted one fricking week.
>retconned
Dumb frick
Aren't they building a rico case when it comes to the mafia? Usually takes a while.

The pilot has its growing pains but it isn't bad at all. This scene alone elevated it above pretty much anything else out that year.

>Tony and his ducks
sex with melfi
Did the show ever explore the question of why Tony only had panic attacks every few years until 1998 when it was suddenly a weekly occurrence? This was when Jackie was still alive, his life hadn't changed much in a while.
Anxiety and depression comes in waves. Sometimes the treatment works or something traumatic will happen and put you back at square one. Tony would always think he’s fine and stop taking his meds too
maybe because that's when he became boss. if there are any flies on you, they're paying rent
Probably because the current acting boss at that time was hospitalized and he was in a position of higher responsibility. Unaddressed, but he was most definetly stressed about what he would need to do about his uncle and still hasn't formulated the puppet capo scheme.
Put the pieces together
>mid life crisis
>mixed relationship with kids and wife
>mother getting more and more difficult as she gets older
>taking on more work as Jackie got sick
>Someday soon, you're gonna have families of your own and if you're lucky, you'll remember the little moments like this that were good.
This is the most depressing line of the show and imo the entire theme of it. Tony knows his life sucks and is going to get worse every day until he dies and cherishes those little sparks of happiness that he knows are fleeting.
That's what the ducks were to Tony, and that's why the panic attacks started when they flew off. Times like that, times that were good, were getting harder to come by.
Did he ever get his penis back from the ducks?

Sexiest woman in the Sopranos? For me it's Angie
Gloria Trillo
Svetlana
Objectively? The character that Sarah Shahi played. Of all the women that appeared semi regularly? For me it's Rosie Aprille.
Paulie getting away with killing the c**ty old woman was one of the most unbelievable shit that happened in the show
Why?
A resident of a fancy nursery home got killed and you think that wouldn't cause a major investigation?
She died of natural causes
Didn't he smother her with a pillow? Wouldn't they think she just had a stroke or a heart attack?
asphyxia due to smothering, they can also easily find traces of the pillow. It's an egregious case of getting away because plot says so
Makes sense. But would they do an autopsy? A woman that old if they didn't suspect any foul play.
it would be major negligence if they didn't do an autopsy
>find traces of the pillow
moron. She hadn't moved to the retirement community yet, and no one would think an 80 something year old woman dropping dead is remotely suspicious.
you're the fricking moron if you think standard autopsy procedure doesn't exist, especially when she died under the nursery home's care.
She was a malignant c**t

Why was she a lawyer in New York? Did Tone' know? You think she's working with the Feds?
she looks pretty good here
She pops up a few times as a defense lawyer in some of the mid-early seasons of law and order.
wasn't Chrissy on Law and Order too?
He's a detective at the end if the 14th episode for like 5 episodes.
He's in an earlier episode as a murderer, he's like a mentally disturbed limo driver that has a mental dilusion that he's in a relationship with a supermodel.
That happens alot, the guy that plays Pussy is in a bunch of episodes of a bunch of different people with different roles, like one he's just a guy the police interview to get a piece of information, then he's in the mob, then he's in the mob, then he's like in the mob, and finally I think he plays a character that's in the mob.
Pussy has range
Ayy it's Carmine's lawyer.
>Tony (possibly the worst actor of the entire series).
Are you fricking moronic? Gandolfini was pitch fricking perfect.
>The dude was phoning this shit in until it somehow blew up.

>not his fault you have the reading comprehension of jackie jr.
More like he has the writing skills of Jackie Jr. His sentence was poorly structured.
>Stevie Van Zandt as Tony (possibly the worst actor of the entire series)
Tony wasn't the actor. Pretty safe to say that it's easy to know what I was talking about, but nice try.
It should have been:
"Stevie Van Zandt, possibly the worst actor of the series, as Tony."
Not my fault you're a fricking moron.

EXACTLY. that's when he started to take it seriously. he fired most of the writing crew and hired new ones for season 2. I just imagine you rocking back and forth screeching
>holy frick, take your meds anon. it's obviously nobody thought Gandolfini was the worst actor in the series
Then don't write your sentences that way. You still can't name better pilots lol.
>EXACTLY. that's when he started to take it seriously. he fired most of the writing crew and hired new ones for season 2. I just imagine you rocking back and forth screeching
What's the problem? You're making it seem like he ignored the show until it "blew up" in season 4. Once it got into a groove in mid season 1, he took it more seriously. Very common from a producer/writer working on multiple projects.
>imagine you rocking back and forth screeching
Still can't name better pilots. I even gave you your 3 replies lololol

Livia was supposed to die in season 1. How do you think she would have gone out?
Best thread on tv
the more the seasons go by, the less things happen each season. season 4 and 5 are the worst where they just introduce new characters and try to give them all some breathing room but everything just feels shallow in comparison
season fricking 4 just ends on a wet fart, i can't believe they genuinely thought that would be a good way to conclude and get people excited for the next season lel.

Kamine said Gandolfini finally arrived about four hours late to the set.
