Crossdressing/drag has been a part of entertainment for as long as humans have been putting on performances.

Pretty much, it only got it's "sexual connotation only" very recently. It basically gender minstrel shows

Is that pink panther crossdressing or just gender shifted?

In any event to answer your question:
    It's funny.

It was funny. A man dressed and pretending to be a women? How absurd.

Because it's a hilarious cheap laugh.

It's typically the same joke as the non-crossdressing skits: the trickster character deceives the antagonist and makes them look foolish, or sometimes the trick backfires. It's also an excuse for the character to ham it up in a feminine role. Rarely, at least in classic cartoons specifically, is the joke itself "har har he's wearing a dress".

Honestly I stopped caring if a laugh is cheap or not.

You should care. Look at these clowns:

The same reason Bugs Bunny kissed Elmer a lot, the funniest thing someone could be was gay.

              >what's the most foolish thing you could possibly think of

Because men wearing female clothes looks stupid and ridiculous.
I don't know how that trans-women don't think they're a joke, a punchline, something to be laughed at.

They wouldn't have a clue how to write a Bugs calibre joke, because they don't understand what makes it funny. They're satisfied with the cheap laugh of "lookit this guy he's a homosexual lol".

They're on Cinemaphile, which is one of the places I used to come to trade mediocre wit, and either my standards have risen or the site's have fallen because it's hard to exchange any worthwhile shit talk when the most cutting insult the other guy can muster is to call you a troony.

Why? They're three internet randos who I'll probably never see or hear from again. The crossdressing bit is just one of many ways the joke was meant to be funny, at least at the time

If you want a real answer, it comes from old comedy traditions, specifically vaudeville. It's just funny to see men dressing up as women and being ridiculous, this was especially prevalent in British comedy for decades.

Not only that, but humor comes from two sides. First, you have the prankster, of whom is wearing the disguise. They come in two variants. The one with the very convincing disguise that can, at the very least, make you believe they're the opposite sex and the one with a very half-baked disguise, that you'd have to be a fool to think they are what they are. Speaking of which.

The fool is the target. They're the ones who make or break the gag, depending on whether, or not, they fall for the disguise. They could see right through the prankster's disguise, no matter how well put together it is. You don't know how, but they just can. Then there's the other, who is none too bright.

They'll fall for the disguise, no matter how poorly constructed it is. Literally, any sane person can tell it's the prankster, so the guy falling for this is hilariously obsurd. However, the best part of the gag is it's flexibility, as this scenerio can be stretched like a thing of gak. Turning the bit into a game of chicken, where you wonder how long it would it last before the disguise is dropped.

Because it used to be a joke that you laughed at and not some glorifoed holier than thou xenogender pity party experience. When Bugs Bunny crossdresses we know it's to trick Fudd for a joke, now if yoy call a crossdresser out for the same trick it's a hate crime.

Not quite, back then they would have seen the joke being on the person getting turned on by the cross-dresser. Bugs wearing lipstick is the set-up, the punchline is your boner.
