This is true for a lot of people. People think they're happy when they're just complacent and learn to just deal with their bad situation.

Happiness is always temporary anyway. If you expect to be happy all the time you will always be miserable. Learn to be content and take happiness as it comes (and goes)

Traditional fairytale/romantic storyline but in a humourous mockery of expectations and setting. Modernity is only shown as to be absurd in contrast with their medieval/magical world. Likeable characters with pretty much zero modern politics inserted beyond Fiona not being the typical damsel in distress (she still needed saving and acknowledges that despite her stubborn nature). It's a classic honestly, just the right mix of everything and yet nothing so particular as to be only relevant to the time it was released. You can watch Shrek in 50 years and it will be just as funny. The only time-bound reference is the OJ one

Pop culture reference and bunch of fairytale characters all in one movie.
I mean, you see anon, dreamworks used to be a little bit 'jackass' for cartoon standard back then, it was like their movies are made by a bunch of college dudes, jocks, drunks, funny dudes at the same time, hence why it feels different than any other animation movie back then.
They used that formula uo until how to train your dragon, by that time they begin to use a more 'serious' approach to their narrative

I was only nine years old. I loved Shrek so much, I had all the merchandise and movies. I'd pray to Shrek every night before I go to bed, thanking for the life I've been given. "Shrek is love", I would say, "Shrek is life". My dad hears me and calls me a homosexual. I knew he was just jealous for my devotion of Shrek. I called him a c**t. He slaps me and sends me to go to sleep. I'm crying now and my face hurts. I lay in bed and it's really cold. A warmth is moving towards me. I feel something touch me. It's Shrek. I'm so happy. He whispers in my ear, "This is my swamp". He grabs me with his powerful ogre hands, and puts me on my hands and knees. I spread my ass-cheeks for Shrek. He penetrates my butthole. It hurts so much, but I do it for Shrek. I can feel my butt tearing as my eyes start to water. I push against his force. I want to please Shrek. He roars a mighty roar, as he fills my butt with his love. My dad walks in. Shrek looks him straight in the eye, and says, "It's all ogre now". Shrek leaves through my window. Shrek is love. Shrek is life.
