Most of the "diversity" characters weren't his creations, but he did develop them and they're more liked than most of the originals.
Byrne hadn't even written anything before. X-men with Claremont is what made him want to write. And he never was as good.

Claremont's X-men run is very arguably the single greatest run of all time, admittedly due in large part to being before the rot in the industry happened and fricking up less than many others as much as actually being good.

It wasn't bad. But It 'wasn't great, specially when sabotaged by Wolverine & the x-men and avx, and specially when literally every arc ends with "LETS ALL GIVE OUR POWERS TO ROGUE SO SHE SOLVES THE DAY"
