Her trying to "fight" her way out of Osaka is straight from the book. I haven't watched the 1980 version in a while but I guarantee it's still there as well.
Then the 1980 version changed it from the book, because her plan of trying to "fight" her way out just to declare that she will commit seppuku out of shame at failing is in there.
I guess that works too, but we got some samurai fighting kino since the 2024 version went the book route.

yeah it wasn't bad all things considered, I wish they'd fleshed out her and Blackthorne's relationship a bit more though

Me too but Mariko and Blackthorne's actors had enough chemistry that it was believable enough and the seppuku scene where he offers to do it was kino. Ultimately you have to sacrifice something to get more of the politics in the new version.

Does Hiromatsu commit seppuku in the book? In the 80's version he's pretty absent.

No. The meeting with all his generals happens but when the generals start getting uppity Toranaga orders a bunch of them to commit seppuku and then orders Hiromatsu to bring the rest of them in line. This version simplified it to Hiromatsu killing himself to show the rest of the generals how serious Toranaga is about no one contradicting his orders. Then obviously we learn Hiromatsu killing himself was part of the keikaku all along which obviously also wasn't in the book, but I thought it was a nice addition.

Hiromatsu's actor pushed for the idea of just himself committing seppuku
One thing I really miss from the book is the lighthearted cultural exchange between Anjin and Toranaga. The hornpipe and the "unless you win"(2024 show ruined it). It does not show that mutual cross-cultural interest. It's needed to show that Toranaga has a casual side to him, too.
I like Toranaga in this version. Constantly btfo'ing muh honor shit and doing whatever is needed to survive. The reveal that as a 12 year old he fricked up the seppuku decapitation was a great scene.
