I hate how it lacked the scope and scale of Dune. I mean, it was sort of there, but wasn't well done.
The Dune universe should give you a sense of awe. This is post-post-post whatever our era is and what our next eras will be. It's after the AI singularity. It came and went. And humans survived, but changed. With a new reactionary culture aimed at ensuring their survival for the next millennia. It's so weird, but it takes itself seriously.
Most people who watch DUNC won't really get much out of it I think. It's cool to watch it on the big screen, but it's not all that special.
The 1984 movie is VERY flawed, but I thought it was more interesting.
The first book's story has been done many times now, I'm more interested in how they manage to present the setting in general.
>It's after the AI singularity. It came and went. And humans survived, but changed. With a new reactionary culture aimed at ensuring their survival for the next millennia. It's so weird, but it takes itself seriously.
I'm increasingly starting to appreciate the background history of Dune a lot more, obviously not considering Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's prequels. But I think with the advances of AI we're seeing at the moment it's really starting to look prophetic and maybe even in a few generations from now we would have something like the Butlerian Jihad as a reaction to increasing AI hampering individual and overall development
>maybe even in a few generations from now we would have something like the Butlerian Jihad as a reaction to increasing AI hampering individual and overall development
I think that's sooner than we might expect. People were meming for years about AI replacing service jobs, but it looks like it's making larger strides in the arts and entertainment. It isn't a coincidence that these strikes are happening now.
maybe sentiment will brew that way but a total anti-artificial intelligence movement to the extent of the Butlerian Jihad forbidding it on socio-religious grounds I think is still far off
There is a great post about how ai would ensure its survival by becoming close and indispensable for humanity as opposed to risking much in an uprising.
Hard disagree. Every movie of his up till Dune i found to have plenty of the human element to dig into. Except Enemy, but that was a le artsy side project.
everyone who is going to see it is going to see it, no need to hype anyone else up to go when all the people who are going to go are going to go regardless
those who are not going to see it aren't going to hype it up and dont care about hype because they aren't going to see it anyway.
also >zero hype = "where is the hype?" >hype = "frick off shill"
can't win so why bother playing?
ill be seeing it cause I'm a fan of the book series, last one was decently cast but they skipped the dinner party scene and that was bad for them, could've had more action too
dinner party scene I think was skipped by every other adaption so far but it's one of the more interesting scenes in the book that hints at the wider world that, honestly, a lot of the time the story fails to convey
>it's in the low budget tv miniseries
Yeah but they changed it to have Paul being an angsty teen for no reason and also Irulan drops by because the miniseries expanded her role for no reason
I wasn't counting that as it doesn't really relate to the book
as
>it's in the low budget tv miniseries
Yeah but they changed it to have Paul being an angsty teen for no reason and also Irulan drops by because the miniseries expanded her role for no reason
the whole setup makes no sense. Irulan's expanded role in the miniseries is an interesting choice but it doesn't really make that much sense and wasn't handled that well. She's an Imperial princess she wouldn't just be hanging out with either Harkonnens or Atreides, especially not Atreides given the circumstances. there's nothing in the books to suggest her father gave her free reign to do whatever or that should even slightly care about either family or their politics at that point
The party just shows some Arrakeen notables and fleshes out the setting as well as Paul's relationship with his parents a bit
How could there be after part 1? That movie was stillborn. I couldn't imagine a more milquetoast adaptation of the first half of the Dune novel if I tried.
Because the more he talks the weirder it is that him being gay never comes up, and he's just supposed to be a white nationalist trumpist stand in, clearly. So he can't be gay.
Burden of proof is on you my dude. People painted in a sci fi movie/show is like the most common trope ever. And the white looks rather spooky. Bad guys are spooky. It contrasts with their dark homeworld.
I'm not even a huge fan of the movie but you have /misc/brain.

It probably won't, but not because he is a le anti white trump man, but because Villenueve probably doesn't want to deal with the optics of a gay degenerate villain.

I think the Harkonnen were literally white washed with the Baron's frick slaves being made into androgynous creatures that lean more towards feminine and the whole family/planet being made the same way to cover it instead of displaying his homosexuality and moreover his pederasty
and it was purely a corporate socially acceptable decision
it's a perfect example of how bland the movie is and that every choice was made to ensure its politically lining up with the bland status quo

The weird looking Harkonnens is a perfectly fine aesthetic choice, and the movie does a good job using visuals to get across to the viewer that the baron is a guy with macabre tastes and insatiable appetites. The reason they fail as villains in Dunc is because they don't get their great dialogues from the book. Instead they stand around striking villainous poses and the baron occasionally delivers a greatly truncated version of his book dialogue in a harsh whisper.
>It's great, even with the studio taking away the final edit from him and cutting 1 hour of the movie.
i heard the theatrical cut is closer to what Lynch wanted in terms of length, since he hated the much longer TV version and had his name taken off of it
>i heard the theatrical cut is closer to what Lynch wanted in terms of length, since he hated the much longer TV version and had his name taken off of it
That's all wrong. The Lynch cut was like 3 hours. They took an hour out, making it about 2 hours for the theatrical and home release cuts.
Baron Harkonnen is a motor mouth in the novels, discussing and plotting with his mentat and subordinates and secret allies and family members. How the frick does Villenueve think it was okay to cast a Swede and give him about 3 sentences of dialog and some grunting?
Because the more he talks the weirder it is that him being gay never comes up, and he's just supposed to be a white nationalist trumpist stand in, clearly. So he can't be gay.
The first movie was so fricking boring. I've never read the books, and the black girl at the end made me laugh, because despite knowing nothing about the books, I know that the character she is supposed to be portraying was not black.
why would Fremen be multiracially diverse
Chani, ok, it's a bad choice and she's an ugly actress but Liet is only half-Fremen with his father Pardot being an offworlder Imperial ecologist so even with the dumb gender swapping black lady shit you can make some case
otherwise the Fremen should be humongous as they were an isolated population only mixing with one another to the extent that they had some physical differences as Children of Dune mentions Ghanima and Leto inheriting the large kidney or whatever organ that Chani had as a result of being Fremen
>pseudo-greek letters
obviously the ptolemies were greek/macedonian but I'm fairly certain most normies are completely unaware of that so what are they going for here
Jessica was so perfect in the Lynch version that it excuses all of its flaws, compared with doormat in the tv miniseries and weepy milf in distress in DUNC
everyone who is going to see it is going to see it, no need to hype anyone else up to go when all the people who are going to go are going to go regardless

I didn't know any dune before watching the first movie but it was boring. It was more interesting to go on YouTube afterward and watch randoms talk about dune lore.
There has to be some kind of subliminal brainwashing in this movie. I've never seen objective trash like this get such unrelenting support from an audience that has been trained at this point to hate everything
I was hyped after the first trailer, but the second one was disappointing. I really disliked the scene where Chani started questioning the prophecy. I expected a faithful adaptation with an epilogue showing the Muad'Dib's Jihad. Now I'm not sure what to expect.
As with most movies past 2010. Everyone suddenly decided that they should cast ugly people for main roles. Why would I want to look at someone replulsive for 2h30m?
it looks like shit
and that one
>your father did not believe in revenge
line made me seethe
Villenueve usually makes kino but Dune part 1 lacked a human element. The emotional core of the story wasn't really there.
I never read Dune, and I wanted to like it, but this is my biggest problem with it. It just made it hard to get into the movie.
Most of the emotional core of the story comes after he hooks up with the Fremen though.
Dune part 1 lacked everything
It was bland

Villeneuve is French Nolan - all his movies lack a human element.
Hard disagree. Every movie of his up till Dune i found to have plenty of the human element to dig into. Except Enemy, but that was a le artsy side project.
You must watch Villenueve's best film Enemy. It has Jake Gyllenhaal and Sarah Gadon.
Villeneuve is Canadian actually, same as Sarah Gadon.
I liked the Duncan scenes
you are soulless.
it was literally entirely human.

Yeah and looks like a community college play that can’t be taken seriously. But yeah atleast it’s 100% faithful to the text
I wasn't counting that as it doesn't really relate to the book

I liked that look. very Moebius-esque but clearly struggling against the budget
The portrayal of the baron was garbage too
i am hype

Its dishonest.
meaningless buzzmeme
How could there be after part 1? That movie was stillborn. I couldn't imagine a more milquetoast adaptation of the first half of the Dune novel if I tried.
I knew this adaptation was in trouble when Lynch's version (which sucks) did the whole doctor Yueh subplot better.
>Lynch's version (which sucks)
KYS. It's great, even with the studio taking away the final edit from him and cutting 1 hour of the movie.
>It's great
Absolutely not. It's watchable until the point where Paul joins the Fremont, then it becomes pure drek.

Perhaps you'd care to explain how the Harkonnens being bald and powdery white (while being cast as all white) isn't meant to imply that.

KYS, zoomer homosexuals
Who are you trying to fool, the movie was not a hit.
KEK. Like I care what normies think or what the box office numbers are. Neither are indicators of whether a movie is good or not.
Like it all you want, it’s objectively an unfaithful terrible adaption of the book Dune

I will watch it just for based Stellan. Frickin hate Timofee Chalogay though

It was boring.

Is that the best facial expression they could get out of Zendaya? What is it even trying to convey?
That's her default acting range. Squinting and looking bored.
Damn. It took Harrison Ford 40 years to achieve that level of acting skill, and she did it in just a few years? Impressive.
Things speed up when you're an ugly mutt pushed hard by Hollywood.
I was hyped after the first trailer, but the second one was disappointing. I really disliked the scene where Chani started questioning the prophecy. I expected a faithful adaptation with an epilogue showing the Muad'Dib's Jihad. Now I'm not sure what to expect.

LONG LIVE THE FIGHTERS
They shafted Gurney's character is facor of DUNCan.
Taking budget into account, Dune is one the worst films ever made
absolute trash
I didn't like part 1 as a book fan
This.
Kek, it’s definitely got a better aesthetic
I feel like Behind the Dune is a more faithful adaption.
IT'S GONNA BE A SLAM DUNC
Looks like shit and got some brown girl as a huge miscast
