He said wanted something to distract him, keep his mind off of it and have some normalcy in his life. Throwing yourself into your work after a traumatic event isn't uncommon, and it isn't callousness. I feel bad for him.

It was all his fault. The road he crashed on was in the middle of nowhere with barely any obstacles in sight, he was probably trying to show off but wienered it up. Also the only reason he returned was to "own the trolls", what a pathetic welp.

He gave the film 1.5 stars on LetterBoxD and said this
Either it's cliches make it so dull he barely has any material (like he said about Epic which he also gave the same score and called a massive clichefest) or that one particular cliche (you know the one) pisses him off enough to rant about it especially since this is DreamWorks' film following The Last Wish
He gave The Bad Guys a 5/10 and skipped out on a full review presumably because he didn't have much to even discuss
He didn't even intend on doing one for Elemental until his fans kept asking for his full opinion

i'm surprised he did, Marmalade is an even more moron twist villain 'cause it's predictable as frick yet somehow ruined Wolf's motivations as it was ALL PART OF HIS PLAN, BABY OH YEAH- I HATE THIS MOVIE IS POPULAR.

        Anonymous

Not saying the movie was perfect or even good, but I really hope he keeps his mouth shut. His opinions are extremely overrated for how little criticism of worth he has to say about the movies he reviews (the fact the only criticism he can levy at both this movie and The Bad Guys is "IT'S SO FULL OF CLICHÉS THO" is proof enough that his dislike of both films is fueled by personal taste instead of objective gripes).

He's completely removed from the film industry, let alone animation, so it's not like his opinions hold professional weight. He also has the bad habit of virtue signaling so fricking much, oftentimes to the detriment of the minorities he claims to support, it doesn't help that he's as "white straight man" as they get.

That anon's a frickwit. That idea's obviously too fricking heavy for the tone of the film they were going for.

The Sky High twist is fricking stupid, but that doesn't mean that shit would have flown. You can't just stick drama in a DreamWorks Animation film where it doesn't belong. That's how they fricked up kung fu Panda.

        >That idea's obviously too fricking heavy for the tone of the film they were going for.
I've been told by people who worked on the movie that that was the original idea. So they initially set out to make a movie with a different tone.

Kung Fu Panda 3 was the least drama-filled film out of the trilogy and it made the least amount. If there's no real drama, the film isn't going to leave much of an impact.
Though I do agree that things would have to be changed beyond Nerissa simply being Chelsea's mother. If Nerissa was the grandmother that Agatha killed, the drama becomes WAY less heavy but still keeps to the characters motivations.

Shen was cool because he contrasted with the Kung-Fu based power structures of the universe, because his character arc mirrored Po's (both had tragedy strike them, only Po could let it go and find the inner peace he needed), because he contrasted with the previous movie's villian (Tai Lung was a lone kung fu warrior, Shen was the head of army), and because he balanced stylistic flair and being clearly dangerous.

So the main villain is some teenage girl who seemed to be motivated in avenging her mom
They're actually the same person, she was just deaged and raised all the way back to a teenager by henchman/simp who posed as her father

The "twist" is the dullest thing they could have done. It made Chelsea one-dimensional. That said, it's not the only problem with the movie. For a story about a disaffected, alienated, lonely teen being taken advantage, there were no real emotional lows. The friend characters didn't even need to exist, and the boy didn't really need to be a character so much as he is a catalyst, a plot device.

Okay, but this is the studio who made moTHERFRICKING HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON.

I wish it were just a TV show. The premise is very solid for one. Blowing a movie budget on a TV pilot story was not the right call. At least not the way Dreamworks handled it.

The twist should have been that everyone was secretly a sea-based creature living on the surface pretending to be human. Connor already looks the part and it would at least justify why all the extras look the way they do.

      >The twist should have been that everyone was secretly a sea-based creature living on the surface pretending to be human
Well, not everyone, but in Luca there are several sea creatures passing as humans you will not notice till the reveal ('cause they can pass as humans as easy as Chelsea).
At some point DW really tried to get out the Luca ripoff spotlight as much as they wanted, so i don't think they would've done that even if that was an idea originally.

i keep saying the same. i would've preferred a Luca ripoff than a Turning Red one. And even so, considering the storyboards, the final battle still existed very earlier so they still could've come with something more interesting by its own.
Ironically all the reworking just ended with a water down Turning Twin Towers Red.

The majority of the movie was spent exploring two relationships, a relationship between Ruby and her mom (with some time spent on other family relationships, but the dynamic with the mom was the important one) and Ruby and Chelsea.
Both of those threads were fricked by the twist.
All the time spent showing Ruby and Chelsea becoming friends ends up feeling hollow and unsatisfying because Chelsea was pure evil all along. 100% pure evil, utterly incapable of having any feelings for Ruby.
The relationship with her mom gets an easy fix by providing a supervillain for Ruby + her mom + her granny to fight against.
It's a bad movie as a result of the twist. Not a SHIT movie, but bad. This needed several more rewrites (or a few less).

There, that's a final analysis, you can now stop wasting pagespace on this badly-written bomb.

Man reminds me of Heavy Rain where this shit was really fricking obvious.
Where the killer is a player character who actively lies to himself in his monologues that take place entirely inside his own head, which only makes sense if he's aware his thoughts are being actively monitored by someone.

This is very unlike Frozen. The Hans romance was extremely quick (and then he stayed in the movie by leading the "rescue mission" then being the villain), and Hans himself was pretty blandly nice as a character before the reveal.
Way more time was spent on the Chelsea friendship, to the point where you got invested in it. And even before her reveal, there was depth to Chelsea, with her (1) being a bad influence (more interesting than just being blandly "a good match" like Hans), and (2) having an interesting backstory about wanting to live among humans (better than Hans' "I just wanted to find a great gal, which means you baby").
Pre-twist Hans was a decent take on the stock heroic love interest. The relationship with Elsa was meh. Pre-twist Chelsea's interactions with Ruby were a load-bearing pillar they built the movie around, and then the twist knocked that pillar right down.

Ditching school isn't good but that's a perfectly normal teenager thing to do. Nothing that says you're actually the queen of an evil race.

She was a bit of a delinquent and seemed to encourage Ruby to "live dangerously" despite the risk of accidentally revealing her identity. That's not ACTUALLY-EVIL bad, but it's way more personality (and potential conflict) than you had with pre-twist Hans.

Sure. Ruby was a seriously straightlaced kid that never did any fun because she was following her mom's instructions, because anything fun might blow the family cover.
Chelsea walked up to the miserable wallflower and said "frick playing it safe, let's play hookey!"
Pre-twist Hans was a perfectly fine take on a generic good-and-heroic boyfriend. There wasn't a ton you could have obviously done with him storywise.
Pre-twist Chelsea was a "friend" that tried to get Chelsea to disobey her mom. There was a LOT you could have done with that, without a reveal that she was literally a villain out to do evil.

I think the important thing to understand is this
                Chelsea could be flawed
Chelsea could be a bad influence
But unless you make her to be this outright evil villain beyond simply being a reckless friend, undoing that friendship will just waste the audience's time

i bet the movie was sent out to die, with barely any budget spent on the marketing, because they knew the movie wasn't that great. and the twist was part of what made the movie not so great.

if the twist wasn't there, then they might have had some sort of level of confidence in the movie, and not sent it out to die, and maybe put it in a better timing where it wasn't surrounded by releases in a crowded summer.

We've discussed how the twist is so baffling stupid it actually kills marketing potential because you can't sell the film as an unlikely friendship story because Chelsea IS evil and to sell this film as an action film you have to spoil the twist because it's the only fight scene in the whole movie
      Can't for that director's commentary

I wish I knew. Because if the film-makers knew it was bad, then they wouldn't have done the dumbass twist in the first place. But if the execs knew it was bad, they could have asked the film-makers not to put the marketing-poison twist into the movie.

If i had to bet on it, I bet it would be the executives who are in charge of the marketing department, who somehow, didn't realise the marketing poison too late. Maybe everyone was just focused on "hee hee Ruby lives a life as an awkward teenage girl and then gets POWERS and defeats the villain! Oh, and the cute mermaid? What if the cute thing, was eeeeeevilllllll!?!?! OMG girls, watch out for frenemies!!!", just thinking it was some baby movie, instead of realising the potential friendship-war-revenge-resolution plot that was there, was something great.

Until they had to market the movie, and realised they could only market it like a movie for babies.

that screencapped post shows they couldn't commit to Ruby being a friendless loner freak, who would be thinking a lot about Chelsea, because Chelsea is her first ever friend.

Ruby in the final movie has friends, and a crush on Connor #totally-relatable movie-to-teenage-girls (who aren't friendless loners)

In the final movie, they could focus the movie more on Ruby and Chelsea's friendship, giving them more scenes of them having fun together, showing Ruby panicking about how to hide/reveal the mermaid friendship, so if they wanted to market it as a friendship movie, keeping the betrayal twist a surprise, like The Talented Mr Ripley, where they hide Tom Ripley murders his friend from the trailers , they would have a lot more scenes for the marketing team to focus on. They could have the "Ruby is a giant kraken scenes" + "Much more Ruby is friends with Chelsea scenes" + "Mermaids + krakens are at war reveal" + "What shall Ruby do with this friendship!?!?", and the marketing team now has an another intrigue for the trailers, other than "coming of age movie, now with superpowers and mermaid villains!"

Heck, even the marketers for The Talented Mr Ripley had a super hard time marketing the movie, and it had an entire second half of the movie after a certain event. If a movie with an entire second half of footage had trouble marketing itself, it was going to be an uphill battle for Ruby Gillman that had a similar betrayal twist.

Relevant section from the transcript in the Youtube description:

, 'Okay, here's a trailer.' And we looked at it, and it was pretty good. Okay, good. Here's another one.

              ...

And he said, 'If you show that trailer, the audiences are going to hate me.' And the reason was because they had concocted the trailer to imply that 'Tom Ripley' kills Dickie Greenleaf in order to get Marge, Gwyneth Paltrow. So that it was a conventional love triangle, and one man struggled with another man for the girl.

Anyway, he said... Anthony said, 'Audiences will hate me.' And the head of publicity at Paramount at that time said, 'Anthony, they already hate you.' Which everyone had to laugh at, but it was emblematic of a certain kind of attitude which you encounter in these situations. The job of the marketing department, the distribution, is to get people into the theatres, and what he felt, this gentleman, was that if we tell them that it's a film about a homosexual going, you know, doing serial killing, audiences won't want to see that film. Because of the preview scores that we had had. And so we're just going to lie in order to get people into the theatres, and then the thinking is, our job is to get them into the theatres, it's your job as the filmmakers to keep them in the theatres. The film has to be good enough to... But clearly there are times when that strategy doesn't work, and it didn't work, as I remember it, with 'Ripley'. The numbers for the first week or two weeks were pretty good for the film, and then it dropped off precipitously.

The transcript shows that lying to audiences doesn't always work well. a lot of the charm of the movie is based on on Ruby and Chelsea's friendship, so lying about there being no twist could easily also show a dropoff. But unlike the other movie mentioned, it doesn't have an entire second half of movie to still keep the audience invested after the betrayal happens. The Ruby Gillman movie loses the Ruby-Chelsea friendship charm, and doesn't have enough time to win back the audience. And by showing the whole "mermaids are evil" thing in the trailer, it's killing the friendship for the audience before the audience can even love it.

If they don't retcon Chelsea is this series over? Realistically speaking it's damaged goods and I doubt you could get someone else to pair as good as with Ruby

If they don't retcon Chelsea, and continue the series as "Haha awkward #super-relatable Kraken girl's teenage life with superpowers" , with Chelsea popping in as the evil mermaid villain, trying to defeat the krakens, with her schemes and plans, I guess they could continue with that. Unsure it would stand out or be popular though. Even if they added a "good mermaids", nobody could be the daughter of Nerissa who was sad her mother was slain and had to grow up as the new mermaid ruler, because Nerissa is still there and alive. They'd have to restart the whole mermaid friendship again, and idk, Ruby gathers the "good mermaids" that somehow also escaped to fight against the evil Nerissa. But then it'd be Ruby participating in the war and becoming a warlord with mermaids, and it'd be awkward with Agatha, and they either deal with those implications, or avoid that sort of plotline because it's not #relatable.

But I doubt they'd ever have anything as powerful as the whole Chelsea-Ruby revenge and friendship plot.

Even if they give Nerissa an actual daughter for the continuation, somehow super-aged her to Ruby's age, and Ruby befriends her, it'd still weird. "Oh mermaid, you have to believe our kraken propaganda that mermaids are evil! now go fight your queen mom!"

Or Nerissa's daughter would complain "ugh, my mom is TOTALLY evil", and it'd be weird, because Chelsea looks like a damn teenager.

it'd be hard to go back into that epic revenge plot they had.

If mermaids don't age, does that mean they are slightly immortal in a sense, as in, they don't die of old age? That means Chelsea might have been expecting to live a lot of her life with her mum around to support her as princess, but no, Nerissa was murdered early.

Or do mermaids just look young for their entire lives, and then drop dead one day at the end of their lifespan?

          Not sexually but yeah

Her motivation before that was avenging the queen because she's her mother

            >What's frustrating is that her being the mermaid queen was a fairly late change

That makes sense, and would fit the teen vs. teen theme.
Why would they change it? Did they feel they had to have some last minute twist to the story?

              >Why would they change it? Did they feel they had to have some last minute twist to the story?
              From a storyboarder
              >I think because the filmmakers came up with a much more clever idea to have Chelsea actually be the very mermaid queen that ruby’s mom had defeated. This way Ruby’s mom did not have to kill anyone in the story as it was when I’d storyboarded the sequence. I think it works much better that way and is a great, fun surprise in the story

              https://www.instagram.com/p/Cu5GQmpLN6F/?hl=en

So in exchange of Agatha having a stronger motivation to leave behind and sacrifice everything for the sake of Ruby, we get the implications that the Krakens killed what amounts to a race of teenage girls and one of the dumbest twist villain reveals since Lightyear

      >as in Nimona is tragic and Chelsea is shallow.
The saddest part is the actual Chelsea, from the storyboards, has a very tragic backstory, losing her mother at young age 'cause the Kraken Mermaid war. It also extends to Agatha, the one who killed Chelsea's mom. And this creates a more complex conflict between Ruby and Chelsea, making their conflict have genuine weight.

It's a cut song from the movie

Goes pretty fricking hard to be honest
Got cut because it was too anti-corporate IIRC and I don't think there's a fully recreated animation of it despite its notoriety
Just animatics done by fans which is still pretty cool
Honestly I misremembered and thought one of them was an official storyboard

They could've pulled it off. Chelsea coldly throwing away their relationship to pursue revenge. Ruby begging her not to do it. All the pieces were there, before the rewrite.

i've been meaning to watch it for a while, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. glad that it sounds good!

Nimona was an excellent movie. Not "Top 10 animated movies" but an excellent movie. And it kills me how much it demonstrated where they went wrong with Ruby.

In both movies the protagonist is in a bad place, and makes friends with a "bad girl" that encourages them to act out. In both movies there's a reveal that this "new friend" is actually a threat they've been warned against.
In Nimona the "Monster" is deeply deeply depressed from a lifetime of being pushed away, and after briefly lashing out she literally attempts suicide - not a dramatic last stand or death by cops or anything like that, she just tries to impale herself on the symbol of her isolation from society. There's still a fight against "the real villain" in the end, but the relationship that was the core of the movie gets a satisfying resolution.
In Gillman... yeah, Chelsea's revealed to be just pure evil, lets defeat her, and beating her resolves all the conflict within Ruby's Family. The Fricking End.

      Soul vs. Soulless.

Except for the 2nd/3rd generation immigrant descendants who completely internalize the Old Country blood feuds they're separated from by generations and thousands of miles and get into politics so they can use the government as a cudgel in them.

Pretty much. Turning Red shouldn't go down as a great movie, but it worked internally. Low on idiotic sidestories, the character designs all matched one another, and it showed internal consistency in the plots. You didn't watch it and go "holy shit, this is three movies Frankensteined into one." The resolution to the main story was Mei and her mom working their shit out. They didn't need a convenient supervillain there to give them an easy resolution.

For the next compassion, I would choice Megamind for the characters.

Ruby's characters just feel like better people. Dreamworks wasn't trying to over throw parents' authority or purpose like Disney did in Turning Red. It made the panda mom pretty unlikeable for most of the movie until she became the literal end boss, unlike Agatha who was a good mom til the very end. Ruby and Mei were pretty similar, but Ruby wasn't some coomer, she just wanted to be with her friends and asking Connor was just extra.

Ling had issues from the way she was raised and tried to force the same ideals onto her daughter, who rebelled. The resolution was the two of them arguing it out until Ling saw she was being fricktarded.

In Gillman the resolution is just that everything works out and everyone is accepting and there was an evil super-mermaid for them to both Kraken Up to fight.

Whether or not Abigail was more likable, Turning Red was the better-written movie, with a resolution that fit the core conflict.

pretty much, Ruby is the weaker film but the ideas presented are more entertaining. It's what so frustrating about it all, if they just organized the film better it would at least been a comfort food kind of movie. It's not too late to to try and fix the issues with a continuation. I think there's a case to be made for that, but not in the way the Tumblrite meant. As much as we joke about this movie being written by Beckys, two of the three writers here were men. And considering they went all in on Total Stacy Death as the moral of the story, and the movie seems to have had little if any interest in NOT promoting Total Stacy Death at any point in its development...

Owning to your mistakes takes strength. At least Chelby artists would be overjoyed, at least put some bullshit about Nerissa being a teenager in mermaid years because those frickers didn't even intend her to be a grown-ass woman judging by interviews

Me, drew it just now. Search for "prrrromotion" on Deviantart and I'll upload it there in a moment

I'm lucky to have at least not drink the "dreamworks renaissance" kool aid. I didn't even find out about this film until it was basically in theaters. But man it's a let down even to me so I can't imagine having been actually hyped.

Thankfully I'm used to letdowns by now, and despite the missed potential I still enjoyed the movie enough to go see it in cinemas after watching it pirated. Pic related is still an amazing scene no matter what happens afterwards.

I'm largely satisfied with the film. The finale was underwhelming because of the twist and the fight stupid but after TLW I didn't have high hopes for Dreamworks since it'd obviously be impossible for them to deliver greatness again so soon, nearly everything met my expectations I mostly watched it for the pretty pictures It is disheartening to see what was originally promised, though, but I don't see it as unsalvageable.

There would be way more fanart than there already is, and dreamwork fans would be insufferable with saying they were braver than disney for showing a canon gay couple.

          Anonymous

Aren't most Disney gay couples blink and you miss it stuff to be cut out for worldwide audiances? It would be props to Dreamworks for actually doing it in a way it couldn't be cut out. (Also because Ruby and Chelsea together makes me feel things)

Even if the movie still did poorly?

Oh for sure I would prefer chelby to be canon, they're cute as frick, and it would be better than disney's current practices, but I know for sure the loudest dreamworks fans would inaccurately say dreamworks did gay canon couple first, when are clearly gay canon disney couples that appear that just aren't the main focus. But even that would be fine if chelby happened because it proved that dreamworks managed to make a great analogy film about gay repression and how that being "normal" isn't as good as showing who you truly are inside with two opposites finding love. In other words it would be a better Elemental

Firs gay couple in a children's movie? No.
First Major gay couple in a children's movie? Maybe? Which I think would still be a source of bragging rights.
And yeah I do agree with the last sentiment. Two opposites finding love I think is what almost everyone in these threads wanted, due to the onscreen chemistry between them (and the storyboards that break me a little every time I'm reminded of them)

That's what really sucks, they had a truly convincing and fantastic potential romance AND a great allegorical movie with a good message that would've legitimately earned them bragging rights and well-deserved praise, but they blew it because what? Complete incompetence in every single department level? Its just unbelievable.
