Well, here is the new thread
Very sweet.
why is the chelsea porn so disappointing
Its all boring human chelsea.
I mean, mermaid tails are harder to draw
Will Schaffrillas make a video on this?
Not before his Pikmin 4 video. How the frick is that guy making content after something so devastating? I know it happened a while ago, but still.
>How the frick is that guy making content after something so devastating?
He said wanted something to distract him, keep his mind off of it and have some normalcy in his life. Throwing yourself into your work after a traumatic event isn't uncommon, and it isn't callousness. I feel bad for him.
So it’s simply cope. I never thought of it that way. It’s always wild to me how people can just die whenever. I think the brother was only 22.
What did he do?
Got into a car accident. Brother and friend died as a result. His videos are a guilty pleasure of mine
It was all his fault. The road he crashed on was in the middle of nowhere with barely any obstacles in sight, he was probably trying to show off but wienered it up. Also the only reason he returned was to "own the trolls", what a pathetic welp.
Some people want to detract to binging on comforts because it's less stressful, some people throw themselves into work because if you're digging a ditch you're thinking about your family.
Only if this film really pissed him off and he has plenty to say about it
Just because he didn't like a movie doesn't mean he has enough to describe why he hated it
He's the only person I don't want to see talk about Ruby x Chelsea. God fricking damn it he might try to say that "Ruby being a troony allegory" would've been a good idea. I dread it.
Ruby can fit as a gay allegory but not trans
She embraces being a kraken by the end and her whole role and powers is exclusive to the royal females of her kind
>Ruby can fit as a gay allegory but not trans
That won't stop him in his never-ending quest for social brownie points.
Not familiar with him, would Schaf care about that?
He's a theater kid, he's obsessed with social politics to an annoying degree and sticks it in any video he can. It pretty much takes over his videos sometimes like when he tried to push a helicopter meme to "reclaim helicopters from the transphobes" He's literally assblasted by the attack helicopter meme he's that far gone.
>when he tried to push a helicopter meme to "reclaim helicopters from the transphobes"
When was that? I legit don't remember.
Every Disney direct-to-DVD movie ranked
Didnt he skip the little mermaid 3, or am i thinking of somone else who did that same idea?
He gave the film 1.5 stars on LetterBoxD and said this
Either it's cliches make it so dull he barely has any material (like he said about Epic which he also gave the same score and called a massive clichefest) or that one particular cliche (you know the one) pisses him off enough to rant about it especially since this is DreamWorks' film following The Last Wish
He gave The Bad Guys a 5/10 and skipped out on a full review presumably because he didn't have much to even discuss
He didn't even intend on doing one for Elemental until his fans kept asking for his full opinion
>He gave The Bad Guys a 5/10 and skipped out on a full review presumably because he didn't have much to even discuss
i'm surprised he did, Marmalade is an even more moron twist villain 'cause it's predictable as frick yet somehow ruined Wolf's motivations as it was ALL PART OF HIS PLAN, BABY OH YEAH- I HATE THIS MOVIE IS POPULAR.
Not saying the movie was perfect or even good, but I really hope he keeps his mouth shut. His opinions are extremely overrated for how little criticism of worth he has to say about the movies he reviews (the fact the only criticism he can levy at both this movie and The Bad Guys is "IT'S SO FULL OF CLICHÉS THO" is proof enough that his dislike of both films is fueled by personal taste instead of objective gripes).
He's completely removed from the film industry, let alone animation, so it's not like his opinions hold professional weight. He also has the bad habit of virtue signaling so fricking much, oftentimes to the detriment of the minorities he claims to support, it doesn't help that he's as "white straight man" as they get.
I don’t have anything against you anon, I just wanted to share this Ruby image
Bruh, he's literally has stated time and time again that he hates it when people treat his opinion as gospel and he sees differeing opinions as perfectly fine
He's outright promoted videos gushing about movies he didn't care for like Dinosaur or Bolt
Letterboxd is a shitposting site
I think this anon nailed most of the reason why the decision to make Chelsea and Nerissa the same instead of her daughter was a full moron play
That anon's a frickwit. That idea's obviously too fricking heavy for the tone of the film they were going for.
The Sky High twist is fricking stupid, but that doesn't mean that shit would have flown. You can't just stick drama in a DreamWorks Animation film where it doesn't belong. That's how they fricked up kung fu Panda.
>That idea's obviously too fricking heavy for the tone of the film they were going for.
I've been told by people who worked on the movie that that was the original idea. So they initially set out to make a movie with a different tone.
>You can't just stick drama in a DreamWorks Animation film where it doesn't belong. That's how they fricked up Kung Fu Panda.
Kung Fu Panda 3 was the least drama-filled film out of the trilogy and it made the least amount. If there's no real drama, the film isn't going to leave much of an impact.
Though I do agree that things would have to be changed beyond Nerissa simply being Chelsea's mother. If Nerissa was the grandmother that Agatha killed, the drama becomes WAY less heavy but still keeps to the characters motivations.
>Kung Fu Panda 3 was the least drama-filled film out of the trilogy
The entirety of Kung Fu Panda 3 is based around a where I really came from arc and it's terrible and sets up the shitty spinoff series.
Well for Kung Fu Panda 4 on the way, we don’t know what the new adventure gonna be.
We had leaked trailer audio and we know the basic premise
I love KFP but I'm not as optimistic on this one as I should be
Kind of feels like the people who wished Tai Lung returning ended up getting monkey paw'd
>You can't just stick drama in a DreamWorks Animation film where it doesn't belong. That's how they fricked up Kung Fu Panda.
What? People praise Kung Fu Panda 2 for its heavier themes and villain.
Lord Shen was one of the best villains out there and he's one of the darkest villains
The most darker villain was the Chef from Trolls.
Shen carried himself well as a villain but there's no denying that his motivations are shit and that he was an absolute moron that got mental illness from a soothsayer.
Shen was cool because he contrasted with the Kung-Fu based power structures of the universe, because his character arc mirrored Po's (both had tragedy strike them, only Po could let it go and find the inner peace he needed), because he contrasted with the previous movie's villian (Tai Lung was a lone kung fu warrior, Shen was the head of army), and because he balanced stylistic flair and being clearly dangerous.
Imagine if they made Tai Lung not Shifu's adopted son because it makes Shifu look bad even though that's the point
>The Sky High twist
Never saw it, what's the twist?
The woman who was the lead's girlfriend was originally the enemy of his parents that was turned into a baby by a weapon misfiring. She had to grow up back to high school age.
That sounds somewhat less terrible than this twist; I'm not quite sure why.
Because Sky High didn't built so much of its appeal off the main character and the villain bonding
He still has a better love interest with actual chemistry unlike
>Connor
He still has friends who mean a damn and actually do shit
So the main villain is some teenage girl who seemed to be motivated in avenging her mom
They're actually the same person, she was just deaged and raised all the way back to a teenager by henchman/simp who posed as her father
Also validating Grandma's racism and shit; ruining a perfect friendship for a shitty twist villain , dammit I just want more of their unlikely friendship.
BOOO Connor jumpscare
I can't believe Sideshow Bob fricked Ruby Gillman
Wait till he finds out Ruby has a friend named Carp Swimson
>Grandmama doesn't watch Connor showing off the math Ruby taught him
>Grandmama doesn't tell Ruby if she's trained her first subject this well she's bound to do fine with the rest of them
you think conner would have looked better with a different haircut ?
no
All the human designs in the movie are horrible. I know Chelsea has to be gorgeous, but they could have made the humans less ugly. Gordon is the only one good human design
Connors issue is his face.
>Thin as frick head that's nearly the same width as his neck
>penis shaped nose that takes up 1/2 face real estate
>oval shaped eyes that have no breathing room
>weirdly shaped non lips
The thing is Connor could look okay, I've seen fanart where I don't hate his appearence. But even if you fixed his design, you're left with a bland as frick character that you see on screen for 5 minutes.
Connor is not bad, he’s just a nice person, and he wants to be with Ruby, a lot.
Yeah but he's a token love interest with no personality and shitty character design
And why not, his hair looks great.
This ugly b***h is why I'll never watch the movie
he's only in it for >5 minutes
he's not even her main motivation, Ruby forgets about prom the 2nd half of the movie
What's up with the character designs in this movie. They look so weird and ugly.
Well I think they are beautiful.
It's like an unholy fusion of CalArts and Alegria rendered in 3D.
>Open link
>See this
>Ruby realizes she could've ended up like Chelsea had her mother not abandon her home, sacrifice everything to start a new life and instead still participated in the war that took Chelsea's mom away from her
Yeah that's more effective than Brill simply saying that to her
The "twist" is the dullest thing they could have done. It made Chelsea one-dimensional. That said, it's not the only problem with the movie. For a story about a disaffected, alienated, lonely teen being taken advantage, there were no real emotional lows. The friend characters didn't even need to exist, and the boy didn't really need to be a character so much as he is a catalyst, a plot device.
Well for one thing, Ruby Gillman is the best cult movie since the Pirate Movie (1982).
The worst part is they changed these ideas and fuse Chelsea with Nerissa 'cause the story was too dark and the krakens were portrayed in a less heroic manner.
Okay, but this is the studio who made moTHERFRICKING HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON.
You can't use that excuse in a movie when in HTTYD the vikings and dragons were actively killing each other and both sides were in a grey line of morality, doing both good and bad things not 'cause these were good or bad but 'cause it was the correct thing from their perspective. Agatha could've been at Stoick level of writing. But no, Agatha is as (almost as) bland as everything else in this movie.
Every new thread i find new ways to destroy this movie, someone should make a video essay, this shit is worth hours of content.
I want to know what happened. What was the director thinking or the writers when they decide Chelsea will no longer be Nerissa daughter, and now Chelsea and Nerissa are the same person?
>someone should make a video essay
I am so tempted to do this but I have no confidence in my voice
No one should ever make a video essay.
Why?
Not him but Anon have you heard the average Cinemaphile voice?
Ultimately it's your own choice, and if you really truly mean to do it, nobody can stop you. But if you feel yourself wanting to make a youtube essay, it's important to remember that you're in a very questionable mental state and probably not making objective judgements. There are always other options available to you, like committing suicide.
No one would make a video essay if tgey didn’t rake in the big bucks
Case in point https://m.youtube.com/@wyattstagg1783/videos
I can't tell if this guy is a troll or a lolcow, but either way, I'm laughing my ass off.
Frick it I'll do it myself, white man sign, my voice may sound like shit but it ain't like anybody will know who I am
Whatever you do
Do NOT sperg out
You're just gonna look like Enter
He had legitimate complaints too, but was too much of a sperg AND a hypocrite. Just don’t be those two things.
If you make a good video with the information well structured, I personally will not care about the voice. Obviously just make yourself understandable and don’t mumble in the microphone
Wait a while until Schaffrillas does it
Like him or hate him, if anyone tears this movie apart for the same reasons we did, it's gonna be him especially if he finds out about the unused storyboards
>it's gonna be him especially if he finds out about the unused storyboards
Someone should send him those.
>both sides were in a grey line of morality, doing both good and bad things not 'cause these were good or bad but 'cause it was the correct thing from their perspective.
Well, it got easily simplified for the dragons since they were being threatened by the Red Death to attack Vikings for food or otherwise they would've been eaten.
this is still a grey area compared to mermaids are evil 'cause yeah so deal with it. Also it helps dragons are at animalistic level of cognitive thinking.
...flying lizards a are better written than teenage sex fishes.
The posters have HTTYD and Shrek on them
Those two are the biggest polar opposites they could have used to promote this film
The poster makes it seem like war between Krakens and Mermaids rage on and Ruby just wants to chill.
>War for the oceans?
>Ancient racial hatred?
>I just want to cook my fondue and smash Chelsea
She is listening Yeezus (2013)
/pol/ack take
It’s because they wanted to villanize white/beautiful people yet again without thinking how that would frick up the story. Something Hollywood has always done but now they’re being more blatant about it.
Just read the premise for this movie out of curiosity, this sounds like a shitty backdoor pilot for a TV show.
I wish it were just a TV show. The premise is very solid for one. Blowing a movie budget on a TV pilot story was not the right call. At least not the way Dreamworks handled it.
>70m TV pilot
The twist should have been that everyone was secretly a sea-based creature living on the surface pretending to be human. Connor already looks the part and it would at least justify why all the extras look the way they do.
>The twist should have been that everyone was secretly a sea-based creature living on the surface pretending to be human
Well, not everyone, but in Luca there are several sea creatures passing as humans you will not notice till the reveal ('cause they can pass as humans as easy as Chelsea).
At some point DW really tried to get out the Luca ripoff spotlight as much as they wanted, so i don't think they would've done that even if that was an idea originally.
>At some point DW really tried to get out the Luca ripoff spotlight as much as they wanted
tbh maybe they should have just owned it to an extent. What happened to the Dreamworks that pushed out Antz despite A Bugs Life being very similar?
i keep saying the same. i would've preferred a Luca ripoff than a Turning Red one. And even so, considering the storyboards, the final battle still existed very earlier so they still could've come with something more interesting by its own.
Ironically all the reworking just ended with a water down Turning Twin Towers Red.
The majority of the movie was spent exploring two relationships, a relationship between Ruby and her mom (with some time spent on other family relationships, but the dynamic with the mom was the important one) and Ruby and Chelsea.
Both of those threads were fricked by the twist.
All the time spent showing Ruby and Chelsea becoming friends ends up feeling hollow and unsatisfying because Chelsea was pure evil all along. 100% pure evil, utterly incapable of having any feelings for Ruby.
The relationship with her mom gets an easy fix by providing a supervillain for Ruby + her mom + her granny to fight against.
It's a bad movie as a result of the twist. Not a SHIT movie, but bad. This needed several more rewrites (or a few less).
There, that's a final analysis, you can now stop wasting pagespace on this badly-written bomb.
>you can now stop wasting pagespace on this badly-written bomb.
Do you really think it's that easy to let this go?
>All the time spent showing Ruby and Chelsea becoming friends ends up feeling hollow and unsatisfying because Chelsea was pure evil all along.
Didn't they also do the Frozen thing where it looks tacked on because there's parts where she's keeping up the act even when there's literally no reason to?
You know the Hans smile? Chelsea does that 3 times.
Man reminds me of Heavy Rain where this shit was really fricking obvious.
Where the killer is a player character who actively lies to himself in his monologues that take place entirely inside his own head, which only makes sense if he's aware his thoughts are being actively monitored by someone.
This is very unlike Frozen. The Hans romance was extremely quick (and then he stayed in the movie by leading the "rescue mission" then being the villain), and Hans himself was pretty blandly nice as a character before the reveal.
Way more time was spent on the Chelsea friendship, to the point where you got invested in it. And even before her reveal, there was depth to Chelsea, with her (1) being a bad influence (more interesting than just being blandly "a good match" like Hans), and (2) having an interesting backstory about wanting to live among humans (better than Hans' "I just wanted to find a great gal, which means you baby").
Pre-twist Hans was a decent take on the stock heroic love interest. The relationship with Elsa was meh. Pre-twist Chelsea's interactions with Ruby were a load-bearing pillar they built the movie around, and then the twist knocked that pillar right down.
>being a bad influence
She wasn't even. She ended up fricking herself by helping Ruby build her confidence. She was a thoroughly good friend until the last 15 minutes.
She had Ruby ditch school
So? Ironically Ruby's friends have suggested worse.
>Just lie to you mom and come to prom with us because we wont back you up.
Ditching school isn't good but that's a perfectly normal teenager thing to do. Nothing that says you're actually the queen of an evil race.
you're a fricking nerd.
So is Ruby
Ruby is not a nerd.
Anon, being a "mathlete" is peak dork. You just know Chelsea gave her swirlies.
She never shuts up about how good she is at math
She was a bit of a delinquent and seemed to encourage Ruby to "live dangerously" despite the risk of accidentally revealing her identity. That's not ACTUALLY-EVIL bad, but it's way more personality (and potential conflict) than you had with pre-twist Hans.
She's as evil as early season Patrick Star
Sure. Ruby was a seriously straightlaced kid that never did any fun because she was following her mom's instructions, because anything fun might blow the family cover.
Chelsea walked up to the miserable wallflower and said "frick playing it safe, let's play hookey!"
Pre-twist Hans was a perfectly fine take on a generic good-and-heroic boyfriend. There wasn't a ton you could have obviously done with him storywise.
Pre-twist Chelsea was a "friend" that tried to get Chelsea to disobey her mom. There was a LOT you could have done with that, without a reveal that she was literally a villain out to do evil.
>Pre-twist Chelsea was a "friend" that tried to get Chelsea to disobey her mom. There was a LOT you could have done with that, without a reveal that she was literally a villain out to do evil.
I think the important thing to understand is this
Chelsea could be flawed
Chelsea could be a bad influence
But unless you make her to be this outright evil villain beyond simply being a reckless friend, undoing that friendship will just waste the audience's time
Anon, making her an outright evil villain and undoing their friendship was a waste of the audience's time. That was the problem.
Yeah I noticed that problem when I finished typing it out, look I just really wanted Chelsea to get a redemption arc even all the way back when she wasn't even hiding her less savory qualities
Yeah. She could have been a b***hy, vain, popular girl who inexplicably becomes attached to the bookish squid girl MC. Her flaws were part of what made her endearing. But they threw it away for some reason.
i bet the movie was sent out to die, with barely any budget spent on the marketing, because they knew the movie wasn't that great. and the twist was part of what made the movie not so great.
if the twist wasn't there, then they might have had some sort of level of confidence in the movie, and not sent it out to die, and maybe put it in a better timing where it wasn't surrounded by releases in a crowded summer.
>. and the twist was part of what made the movie not so great.
The execs noticed that or the filmmakers?
We've discussed how the twist is so baffling stupid it actually kills marketing potential because you can't sell the film as an unlikely friendship story because Chelsea IS evil and to sell this film as an action film you have to spoil the twist because it's the only fight scene in the whole movie
Can't for that director's commentary
I wish I knew. Because if the film-makers knew it was bad, then they wouldn't have done the dumbass twist in the first place. But if the execs knew it was bad, they could have asked the film-makers not to put the marketing-poison twist into the movie.
If i had to bet on it, I bet it would be the executives who are in charge of the marketing department, who somehow, didn't realise the marketing poison too late. Maybe everyone was just focused on "hee hee Ruby lives a life as an awkward teenage girl and then gets POWERS and defeats the villain! Oh, and the cute mermaid? What if the cute thing, was eeeeeevilllllll!?!?! OMG girls, watch out for frenemies!!!", just thinking it was some baby movie, instead of realising the potential friendship-war-revenge-resolution plot that was there, was something great.
Until they had to market the movie, and realised they could only market it like a movie for babies.
Reminder
Now imagine the person screaming "WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE MERMAID IS EVIL!?"
they very clearly realized they had a terd and what people actually wanted was a pretty white mermaid so they had misleading trailers
more people saw their trailers than say this random post. is that hard to understand you dumb homosexual? not to mention there is no reason to believe this post, you can only be smug about it after the fact since we now know its correct
turd*
that screencapped post shows they couldn't commit to Ruby being a friendless loner freak, who would be thinking a lot about Chelsea, because Chelsea is her first ever friend.
Ruby in the final movie has friends, and a crush on Connor #totally-relatable movie-to-teenage-girls (who aren't friendless loners)
In the final movie, they could focus the movie more on Ruby and Chelsea's friendship, giving them more scenes of them having fun together, showing Ruby panicking about how to hide/reveal the mermaid friendship, so if they wanted to market it as a friendship movie, keeping the betrayal twist a surprise, like The Talented Mr Ripley, where they hide Tom Ripley murders his friend from the trailers , they would have a lot more scenes for the marketing team to focus on. They could have the "Ruby is a giant kraken scenes" + "Much more Ruby is friends with Chelsea scenes" + "Mermaids + krakens are at war reveal" + "What shall Ruby do with this friendship!?!?", and the marketing team now has an another intrigue for the trailers, other than "coming of age movie, now with superpowers and mermaid villains!"
Heck, even the marketers for The Talented Mr Ripley had a super hard time marketing the movie, and it had an entire second half of the movie after a certain event. If a movie with an entire second half of footage had trouble marketing itself, it was going to be an uphill battle for Ruby Gillman that had a similar betrayal twist.
Relevant section from the transcript in the Youtube description:
, 'Okay, here's a trailer.' And we looked at it, and it was pretty good. Okay, good. Here's another one.
...
And he said, 'If you show that trailer, the audiences are going to hate me.' And the reason was because they had concocted the trailer to imply that 'Tom Ripley' kills Dickie Greenleaf in order to get Marge, Gwyneth Paltrow. So that it was a conventional love triangle, and one man struggled with another man for the girl.
Anyway, he said... Anthony said, 'Audiences will hate me.' And the head of publicity at Paramount at that time said, 'Anthony, they already hate you.' Which everyone had to laugh at, but it was emblematic of a certain kind of attitude which you encounter in these situations. The job of the marketing department, the distribution, is to get people into the theatres, and what he felt, this gentleman, was that if we tell them that it's a film about a homosexual going, you know, doing serial killing, audiences won't want to see that film. Because of the preview scores that we had had. And so we're just going to lie in order to get people into the theatres, and then the thinking is, our job is to get them into the theatres, it's your job as the filmmakers to keep them in the theatres. The film has to be good enough to... But clearly there are times when that strategy doesn't work, and it didn't work, as I remember it, with 'Ripley'. The numbers for the first week or two weeks were pretty good for the film, and then it dropped off precipitously.
The transcript shows that lying to audiences doesn't always work well. a lot of the charm of the movie is based on on Ruby and Chelsea's friendship, so lying about there being no twist could easily also show a dropoff. But unlike the other movie mentioned, it doesn't have an entire second half of movie to still keep the audience invested after the betrayal happens. The Ruby Gillman movie loses the Ruby-Chelsea friendship charm, and doesn't have enough time to win back the audience. And by showing the whole "mermaids are evil" thing in the trailer, it's killing the friendship for the audience before the audience can even love it.
They outright had lines from Chelsea exclusive to the trailer that made it seem she was gonna be a more blatant villain than what we got
If they don't retcon Chelsea is this series over? Realistically speaking it's damaged goods and I doubt you could get someone else to pair as good as with Ruby
If they don't retcon Chelsea, and continue the series as "Haha awkward #super-relatable Kraken girl's teenage life with superpowers" , with Chelsea popping in as the evil mermaid villain, trying to defeat the krakens, with her schemes and plans, I guess they could continue with that. Unsure it would stand out or be popular though. Even if they added a "good mermaids", nobody could be the daughter of Nerissa who was sad her mother was slain and had to grow up as the new mermaid ruler, because Nerissa is still there and alive. They'd have to restart the whole mermaid friendship again, and idk, Ruby gathers the "good mermaids" that somehow also escaped to fight against the evil Nerissa. But then it'd be Ruby participating in the war and becoming a warlord with mermaids, and it'd be awkward with Agatha, and they either deal with those implications, or avoid that sort of plotline because it's not #relatable.
But I doubt they'd ever have anything as powerful as the whole Chelsea-Ruby revenge and friendship plot.
Even if they give Nerissa an actual daughter for the continuation, somehow super-aged her to Ruby's age, and Ruby befriends her, it'd still weird. "Oh mermaid, you have to believe our kraken propaganda that mermaids are evil! now go fight your queen mom!"
Or Nerissa's daughter would complain "ugh, my mom is TOTALLY evil", and it'd be weird, because Chelsea looks like a damn teenager.
it'd be hard to go back into that epic revenge plot they had.
Yes. The squandered friendship is the only reason anyone talks about this movie at all.
You think it's gonna be the one thing that prevents this movie from being as forgotten as Home and Monsters vs Aliens?
Hell, even Abominable is forgotten and it wasn't even bad
I think so, because those movies may have been bad, but not in a noteworthy way. On the other hand, this movie's twist was offensively bad.
Abominable sucked CCP wiener. It can burn in hell.
I enjoyed Monsters vs. Aliens.
I fricking hated Home, because it raped excellent source material for the sake of a shitty Happy Hollywood Ending.
Honestly Monsters vs Aliens is only in my mind because of two things
A. How DreamWorks really wanted to push it as a new franchise
B. That when the movie was coming out, people thought the villain looked like Jeffrey Katzenberg and even the team behind the movie and Katzenberg himself responded
https://archive.nytimes.com/carpetbagger.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/27/did-the-monsters-vs-aliens-animators-draw-the-villain-to-look-like-jeffrey-katzenberg/
>Doesn't remember the Giant Woman kicking ass alongside Classic Monster Stereotypes
>But does remember something about Katzenberg
I'm sorry to hear that.
ah, rewatched the trailers for that other movie. Turns out they didn't keep the "twist" a surprise, I was just talking out of my ass. But as
said, they still had to lie about something to market the movie.
Ruby Gillman had a predicament between hiding the twist and putting off audiences who watched it for the Chelsea-Ruby friendship, or showing everything and trying to market the film off its other aspects.
They thought they would make hundreds of millions just by making fun of a recent Disney film (The Little Mermaid) and pushing anti-woke undertones (Grandma's racism was actually right).
And can you blame them? Could anyone have predicted that Cinemaphile, of all places, would be shipping a lesbian couple and slamming the movie for not going for an anti-racism plot line?
a movie plot-twist so shit, that Cinemaphile acts in reverse. maybe that was the real plot twist all along.
Ok let’s face it. We are not going to get a TV serie or a sequel. The film was a bomb and barely could get half of the production cost. The only case Ruby Gillman can be saved is for streaming and I would like to know how is the film performing
That most likely is the case. But goddamn does that hurt, they had such a good premise for a show and just fricked it hard. In another timeline, Ruby Gillman is this franchise juggernaut. You could get Ruby and Chelsea vs Leviathan toys. Shame that's not the timeline we have.
Nr 5 on iTunes
Oh it will, when people learn to love it.
>The only case Ruby Gillman can be saved is for streaming
Kick-Ass was able to get a sequel thanks to the DVD/Blu Ray sales. Family Guy was able to return from cancellation because of the same thing. For DreamWorks, they started production on a sequel to Megamind thanks to Schaffrillas's review of the movie, and the memes people with it. They is always a chance.
>all we need is him to pitch good ideeas to Dreamworks
Do it please theatre kid, I have faith in you
Who's the guppyfood bawd now b***h?
Not as much damaging as the training montage that takes up most of the movie did. The amount of dialog that Ruby has with the mermaid can barely fill one page.
i'm glad that storyboard presenting Chelsea as Nerissa's daughter exists, some Chelby shipper artists arw actually coming back after it.
In general people are rejecting the movie's canon and accepting the storyboards as the true canon. i love that, i love people are accepting the more pure vision of the earlier drafts as the canon.
I gotta wonder if spoiling the tweest was, in part, motivated by the suits asking themselves "Wait, isn't this saying your racist grandparents are completely right?" and deciding they could take the sting out of the ensuing controversy by giving away the ending.
The descrption of the digital release spoils the entire plot (sans Chelsea being Nerissa) so I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case
Is frogchad on these threads? Feels like he's saying the same things as us
You don't have to be here to realize the faults with this movie
Just similar minds thinking alike
i mean, people on youtube has been saying the same too, and they for sure don't visit this platform.
If mermaids don't age, does that mean they are slightly immortal in a sense, as in, they don't die of old age? That means Chelsea might have been expecting to live a lot of her life with her mum around to support her as princess, but no, Nerissa was murdered early.
Or do mermaids just look young for their entire lives, and then drop dead one day at the end of their lifespan?
>Or do mermaids just look young for their entire lives, and then drop dead one day at the end of their lifespan?
We don't know because this movie's world building falls apart when you do consider mermaids being a race of teenage girls
That means krakens waged war and slaughtered teenage girls
That means mermaid teenage pregnancies are canon in Ruby Gillman's setting
>teenage girl-power movie
>the race of cute pretty teenage fish-girls are IRREDEEMABLY EVIL! no girl-power for them!
bruh
Girl power is only for Beckys. Total Stacy Death.
He has soulless black hole eyes.
Exactly, beautiful white people bad according to Hollywood
Specifically beautiful white people who went to the same high school as the Hollywood writers.
Holy fricking shit. You two are right, spite murdered this movie
>the writers proceed to make an entire race of popular high school teenage girls
>they're all irredeemable evil and get genocided anyway
~~*Gillman*~~
Exactly, they just want beautiful white people to be the villains.
I hope things will be new in the TV Series of Teenage Kraken.
Just go to this site and poll more Star into 6 for Ruby.
https://m.imdb.com/title/tt27155038/?ref_=ttcnn_ov
No, let it sink
No let it live. Make it a hit again. Like Trolls.
I love Ruby and Chelsea and the Gillman family as a whole
But I love roasting this movie more
Then Score more stars in it!
lmao no, this movie SUCKS they deserve the flop.
no matter how much i love RUby and Chelsea, no matter how much enjoy the Gillmans' antics, no matter how much i would love to see more of this setting, no. The movie itself sucks, these people are hacks, and they deserve to be point and laugh at them.
this movie was already throwaway shit without any twist reveal. you morons have to accept Disney Pixar will remain the standard no matter what setbacks original IP suffers.
the dreamworks renaissance was a meme and Illumination is back to their ol craphouse.
>is back to their ol craphouse.
That's being directed by the guy who did Ernest & Celestine so that might actually be good
So what kind of sea monsters would you like to see in a continuation that likely wasn't in Grandmamahs throne? Or hell just monsters/enemies in general. Wendigos could be a cool land based threat.
Grootslang
Serpent Society but they're all giant sharks based on bad shark movies
Sand shark, super shark, ghost shark, Jersey shark, Sharknado, etc
Connor's dad
Creepy galesse
maybe not an enemy, but it'd be fun if Namazu (earthquake catfish) made an appearance
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namazu
Goofing off the whole mermaid/siren thing, someone that looks like a normal bird except for having a human face that has stereotypical mermaid behavior.
Man.
Imagine if the legends of Kraken sinking ships were actually mostly from Ruby's ancestors taking out vessels to protect the whales they were hunting.
The Great Orca War.
It's not really a twist if even a 3 year old can see it coming.
The actual twist isn't Chelsea being the villain.
The actual twist is Chelsea is Nerissa, somehow even worse!
Rubybros i still have faith that we can see more of Ruby and her family. In case of a TV serie what kind of episodes would you like for the family? I personally would like to see how Agatha sells houses or Arthur doing a livestream, even an episode with Brill and Gordon can be a good option
Brill needs his Blade Runner arc of having no GF.
The Dance Scene from Ruby Gillman was wonderful for a finale of the movie.
bro the movie is in HD already why are you using that shit looking screencap
Late to the game, what's this twist, and how does it ruin the movie?
Chelsea's a twist villain
Yeah the trailer and marketing spoiled it but she only turns evil at the last 15 minutes and not only is she evil, she was an evil adult mermaid queen this whole time. "Chelsea" technically never even existed
For that she is like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide.
No.
Nope, in fact when people here tried to coming up with ways to retcon it something like that was on the table
Not sexually but yeah
What's frustrating is that her being the mermaid queen was a fairly late change
Her motivation before that was avenging the queen because she's her mother
>What's frustrating is that her being the mermaid queen was a fairly late change
>Her motivation before that was avenging the queen because she's her mother
That makes sense, and would fit the teen vs. teen theme.
Why would they change it? Did they feel they had to have some last minute twist to the story?
>Why would they change it? Did they feel they had to have some last minute twist to the story?
From a storyboarder
>I think because the filmmakers came up with a much more clever idea to have Chelsea actually be the very mermaid queen that ruby’s mom had defeated. This way Ruby’s mom did not have to kill anyone in the story as it was when I’d storyboarded the sequence. I think it works much better that way and is a great, fun surprise in the story
https://www.instagram.com/p/Cu5GQmpLN6F/?hl=en
So in exchange of Agatha having a stronger motivation to leave behind and sacrifice everything for the sake of Ruby, we get the implications that the Krakens killed what amounts to a race of teenage girls and one of the dumbest twist villain reveals since Lightyear
i have opened that link several times and i can't still find that quote
maybe i'm a moron at using Instagram.
thanks, and for some reason that comment isn't showing on my end??? Gonna save this screencap tho.
Maybe the person he replied blocked me.
The post was deleted, possibly for the music
The post is still up, and i can see most comments on it but the one he replied. i checked offline and yeah now i can see it. Def i got blocked by whoever he replied there.
Wait, how does this actual Hollywood professional think that this is a better idea? How did everyone up the chain to the producers think this was a better idea?
That's the ultimate question isn't it. The change is utterly baffling on nearly all levels.
If only there was a way for the writers strike to lead to all writers and all producers being kicked to the curb. Both sides are at fault.
So the whole movie is about adults creeping on teenagers?
The hot redhead mermaid, tiene to be a hot MILF redhead mermaid instead of a hot teen redhead mermaid
Turned to be***
Stupid autocorrect
What an odd word to autocorrect to, it isn't even English.
ñ momento
Ruby using all her skills as a mathlete to count to three
What is the twist?
>Nerissa fighting Agatha
>Nerissa: Ruby called me mommy too
>Agatha: What
>Nerissa smirks
>Multiple 500+ post threads for a flop of a movie that people agree was poor-at-best
Behold the power of one (1) actually attractive character in an animated movie in 2023.
it seems you haven't been in these threads.
There have been a lot of insane reveals after some storyboards got released.
Chelsea isn't the one thing powering these threads, tourist, this is way deeper. This is my joker arc now.
There are more surprising and engaging plot twists in learning about Ruby Gillman's development then there is in the finalized script lol
Yeah, Gordon is carrying this film hard.
Unironically the only one actual human
The movie is meh, but watching the storyboards and conceptual art you can see that there was gold in this film. And they somehow destroyed everything
Chelsea's status as the worst character supersedes whatever coom worth she has.
Chelsea is a great character
Nerissa fricking sucks though
Chelsea doesn't exist, It's all Nerissa
Just let me dream man
I see Chelsea and Nerissa as two separate characters because of the change being that drastic
>ancient monster posing as a young red headed girl in Nimona
celebrated
>ancient monster posing as a young red headed girl in Ruby Gillman
ew groomer
I didn't even like Nimona the movie or the person but they did a better job than Chelsea at being a tragic character as in Nimona is tragic and Chelsea is shallow.
>as in Nimona is tragic and Chelsea is shallow.
The saddest part is the actual Chelsea, from the storyboards, has a very tragic backstory, losing her mother at young age 'cause the Kraken Mermaid war. It also extends to Agatha, the one who killed Chelsea's mom. And this creates a more complex conflict between Ruby and Chelsea, making their conflict have genuine weight.
i'll be forever mad about this.
>Director’s cut.
Bombs like these don't warrant one
If the fans of Snyder could get the Snyder’s cut, our autism can save this movie
Snydergays are on an entirely different level in terms of autism and numbers
Discussing RGTK's missed potential is more of an inside thing among about a hundred people on the internet at best
Most people look at this film and don't care much for it afterwards
Oh zip it.
I wonder if some autist will stitch the storyboards together as an alternate take on Ruby Gillman. Kinda like when Star Wars fans would edit the Prequel Trilogy to take the cringe out.
A fan animation completing the BFF storyboard would suffice
But then again if fricking Biggering never got that after all these years, I doubt this will
tbh outside of Biggering the nu-Lorax just doesn't warrent much attention. I'd rather just watch the infinitely better 70s short. Then again I don't know how deep the tumblr Onceler rabbit hole truly is.
>Then again I don't know how deep the tumblr Onceler rabbit hole truly is.
i've seen hell, and hell looked back at me. we saw each other, in horror, as a massive Onceler orgy occurs before our eyes...
How long did it take for the Onceler fandom to finally die?
>to finally die?
It's still alive!?
Seriously?
No, even on tumblr they only bring it up ironically. It's dead all right.
Some fricking people decided to revive the tumblr sexyman trend lately, and with it, the horrors came back. It isn't as mainstream as it was, but if anything, that allows these frickers to do worse.
https://istheoncelerfandomstillalive.tumblr.com/
if you search tumblr by recent, they're still posting about him
That is disturbing
But still gives me hope for Chelby
When the last tree died
WTF is 'Biggering'? I know what Onclercest is, unfortunately.
Song, its a banger, even has a few fan made animatics on YouTube
Also onceler is very popular on tiktok, Tumblr is fricking dead
Damn, that song does go hard. Thanks guys. Any producer ever confess why they cut it?
i've never found a reason for it. or saw anybody else that found a insider source with a concrete reason for its exclusion, despite me being in the onceler fandom for quite a while
i've been meaning to watch it for a while, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. glad that it sounds good!
this epic song they cut from the lorax film
It's a cut song from the movie
Goes pretty fricking hard to be honest
Got cut because it was too anti-corporate IIRC and I don't think there's a fully recreated animation of it despite its notoriety
Just animatics done by fans which is still pretty cool
Honestly I misremembered and thought one of them was an official storyboard
>Got cut because it was too anti-corporate IIRC
I remember it being cut because it was too hardcore for the direction the suits wanted the movie to go in.
People say How Bad Can I Be? was its intended replacement, but honestly I think they work great as companion pieces.
>Got cut because it was too anti-corporate IIRC
How Bad Can I Be is arguably more anti-corporate. It has all of Biggering's second-half lyrics about corporations, Whereas Biggering is about The Onceler's downfall into greed and him justifying it.
The Lorax is anti-corporate for itself
Nimona was an excellent movie. Not "Top 10 animated movies" but an excellent movie. And it kills me how much it demonstrated where they went wrong with Ruby.
In both movies the protagonist is in a bad place, and makes friends with a "bad girl" that encourages them to act out. In both movies there's a reveal that this "new friend" is actually a threat they've been warned against.
In Nimona the "Monster" is deeply deeply depressed from a lifetime of being pushed away, and after briefly lashing out she literally attempts suicide - not a dramatic last stand or death by cops or anything like that, she just tries to impale herself on the symbol of her isolation from society. There's still a fight against "the real villain" in the end, but the relationship that was the core of the movie gets a satisfying resolution.
In Gillman... yeah, Chelsea's revealed to be just pure evil, lets defeat her, and beating her resolves all the conflict within Ruby's Family. The Fricking End.
Soul vs. Soulless.
Nimona =~= The Ruby Gillman We Could've Gotten > Elemental > The Ruby Gillman we got.
Elemental is Ruby Gillman if the girls kissed. so the better movie.
this movie made 1/10 of Elemental at the box office and that movie bombed who tf is in these threads.
Basically a small group of masochists like myself who look forward to any more potential storyboard reveals because the trainwreck of lost potential is astounding
Its more fun to talk about where production went wrong rather than the film itself
Chads
Disney/Pixar puts too much money in their movies and the still expect to surpass the production cost. At least Dreamworks only used 70M
Elemental is just mid, as in actually being mediocre. It told the story it wanted to, nothing more or less. Plus the worldbuilding just isn't engaging. Ruby triggered my autism hard.
>watch Elememental
>it's okay, nothing special nor worth of checking deeper
>watch Ruby Gillman
>this is abysmal, like how!? There must be a reason this is THAT bad!
>enters a seabunny hole worth of hours of so much development hell it's astounding
RGTK triggers my autism so bad, this movie was made for autistic fricks. Ruby herself is an autistic frick. This movie is autismcore.
A camrip was on twitter for almost a week before being taken down
Anyone writing a good fanfic based on what we could had with this movie? I love it.
Ruby Gillman wanna dance with somebody.
A princess going to the ball.
I don't want to read through a million posts to get to the meat. Is there anywhere the info has been compiled? Or some screencaps of the most relevant bits?
I'm curious but not going to do a damn study project.
tvtropes has a pretty comprehensive list of links in their trivia page
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Trivia/RubyGillmanTeenageKraken
Yeah i know TV Tropes is a shithole, but the What Could Have Been section has a lot, it's quite telling when it's like almost half the entire trivia page.
I'm surprised nobody has included the "Yes the racist grandma is right" for the accidental aesop in YMMV
You mean YMCA?
At least she's mentioned in the Memetic Psychopath section.
Any screencaps links?
Did we confirm there was ever a version that ended with Ruby and Chelsea still friends? Or was it always Bad End City for our redhead?
Latter most likely
She's not present in any of the storyboards for the dance party
The biggest amount of copium we got is if they could have remained threads back when the movie was more like the BFF storyboard where Chelsea was a bad influence outright but seemed to have genuinely love Ruby as a friend regardless
Nah, I think Chelsea was always meant to be an antagonist, not sure if full villain though. The least they could have done is given her proper motivation though.
so I finally watched (skipwatched) RG and I gotta say it's incredible how much better Turning Red is.
And it still sucks.
Yeah. Ruby Gillman sucks but we know. Turning Red sucks yet some morons keep pushing that crap for the 911 memes.
Turning Red is a genuinely good movie, Ruby Gillman is an underwhelming piece of crap and only Mr Enter can revive it.
quick, what's the "Turning Red forgot about 9/11" equivalent for Ruby Gillman?
>only Mr Enter can revive it.
Enter liked Ruby Gillman
Surely he was annoyed at the twist, right?
He just said he enjoyed the movie on Twitter and thought the marketing did it dirty
>Turning Red forgot about 9/11" equivalent for Ruby Gillman?
Not sure if it's a 1:1 comparison but Grandmamahs racism is a pretty consistent internal meme with RGTK
What Grandmamah was doing in the years from 1939 to 1945
Sinking U-Boats, of course, just like Namor
Grandmamah feels like she was the reason why Krakens were known to be sea monsters that sunk ships. The way she talked about humans tells us she doesn't think they are high beings like her.
Grandmamah being the "noble protector of the oceans" is called under hard scrutiny by the film itself
Brill calls her a fricking warlord
Getting over your ancestral hatred and realizing that both sides back in the old country were a bunch of buttholes is an integral part of the American 2nd/3rd generation experience.
They jettisoned that for some twist that undermines the entire movie?
>Getting over your ancestral hatred and realizing that both sides back in the old country were a bunch of buttholes is an integral part of the American 2nd/3rd generation experience.
Except for the 2nd/3rd generation immigrant descendants who completely internalize the Old Country blood feuds they're separated from by generations and thousands of miles and get into politics so they can use the government as a cudgel in them.
Surprisingly I don't see much of that IRL, except when actual wars start.
Peace through tyranny or something.
Isn't that quote from Megatron?
Yep.
>Grandmamah feels like she was the reason why Krakens were known to be sea monsters that sunk ships.
Wouldn't that imply Grandmamah is over 200 years old?
>The way she talked about humans tells us she doesn't think they are high beings like her.
Why should she?
When you put it like that a burger is pretty *pinch harmonic*ing brutal.
Someone draw picrel with Chelsea
Mei was a coomer and Ming was over bearing as frick to the point where Mei wanted to rebel. Ruby wanted to be with her friends and Agatha wanted to protect her from beings that wanted them dead.
>>>
Red is a genuinely good movie
>Schaffrillas gave it a fair review
>got bullied by TR's fans into changing his mind
>even after that, you can tell he doesn't like TR for how dismissive he is about it even when trying to be positive
Yeah go eat a warm turd. The TR fans are genuine maniacs.
Pretty much. Turning Red shouldn't go down as a great movie, but it worked internally. Low on idiotic sidestories, the character designs all matched one another, and it showed internal consistency in the plots. You didn't watch it and go "holy shit, this is three movies Frankensteined into one." The resolution to the main story was Mei and her mom working their shit out. They didn't need a convenient supervillain there to give them an easy resolution.
For the next compassion, I would choice Megamind for the characters.
Ruby's characters just feel like better people. Dreamworks wasn't trying to over throw parents' authority or purpose like Disney did in Turning Red. It made the panda mom pretty unlikeable for most of the movie until she became the literal end boss, unlike Agatha who was a good mom til the very end. Ruby and Mei were pretty similar, but Ruby wasn't some coomer, she just wanted to be with her friends and asking Connor was just extra.
Ling had issues from the way she was raised and tried to force the same ideals onto her daughter, who rebelled. The resolution was the two of them arguing it out until Ling saw she was being fricktarded.
In Gillman the resolution is just that everything works out and everyone is accepting and there was an evil super-mermaid for them to both Kraken Up to fight.
Whether or not Abigail was more likable, Turning Red was the better-written movie, with a resolution that fit the core conflict.
>implying coomer panda isn't a better story
this whole thread is b***hing for missing out on coomer mermaid
>people in this thread don't like the twerking e-girl panda
Yes, and?
i won't go to TR threads to tell them to like RGTK, nor for any other possible reason, those threads are shit too.
>One is about how a girl getting her period and being horny makes her fear she'll be like her mom
>Another is about how a girl thinks she can write the wrong her mom and grandmamah
coomer panda isn't a better story
Is it, though?
We are now reaching eternal teenager NerissaxRuby
I really wonder what the directors are thinking right now, or the staff. Frogchad is spreading the word on twitter
Is it even explained in the movie if mermaid age mentally? Or is it left open to interpretation and plot holes?
artist?
https://twitter.com/Luci_lezher?t=LWZBjSIxnHjh22SIVAFDqQ&s=09
>fork as a weapon when they have laser eyes
Was this an ariel reference?
Ruby has a better concept, but TR had a better execution. Then again, TR's budget was 175 mill and Ruby's was less than a third with 50 Mill. RT has the cash to hire better writers.
>Ruby has a better concept, but TR had a better execution
pretty much, Ruby is the weaker film but the ideas presented are more entertaining. It's what so frustrating about it all, if they just organized the film better it would at least been a comfort food kind of movie. It's not too late to to try and fix the issues with a continuation. Anons keep coming up with episode ideas, that's something I don't see much for other movies, especially bad ones.
>we keep coming up with these ideeas
>no one will probably see them
And that’s why I love these threads
Ruby had too many concepts.
"Spongebob meets Coneheads" was the original one, and would have been based. Then they kept hunting for EVEN BETTER ideas and fricked themselves.
Coming of age, slice of story of an unlikely friendship bewteen a lonely nice girl and a popular delinquent
OR
Coming of age story about familial trust, immigrating to a new life for the safety of your child, the cycle of revenge, and moving past generational conflict through the power of friendship
And in the end they did neither.
*slice of life story
They could have used both for a serie
They did neither. They made a damn mess is what they did.
a RG sequel series with Chelsea only works if the latter is repentant and she's not, chelsea is evil and without a hint of remorse.
>Ruby Gillman had the more entertaining ideas
what's so entertaining about everyone being moronic about the blue monster child?
Remember when one of the directors said to look our there was one more twist? And we all went like, I see you mr Producer she's a misunderstood redeemable villain and not another Hans!
>he was talking about Nerissa twist
>this man genuinely thought people would shit their pants as if this was some pinnacle of writing , probably feeling like picrel
Also someone on tumblr said this movie failed because misogyny lmao
>Also someone on tumblr said this movie failed because misogyny lmao
I think there's a case to be made for that, but not in the way the Tumblrite meant. As much as we joke about this movie being written by Beckys, two of the three writers here were men. And considering they went all in on Total Stacy Death as the moral of the story, and the movie seems to have had little if any interest in NOT promoting Total Stacy Death at any point in its development...
Better writers don't cost millions.
Yeah they do and they want more.
CHELSEABRO-I MEAN, KRAKENBROS WE CAN'T BE WORSE THAN THE TERRORIST COOMER PANDA
What can we do Rubybro?
Use AI voices to give this movie the ending it deserves
So what fun misadventures do you like to think these two had recently?
Hitting the Pentagon.
Chelsea bought an atomic bomb
Thingamabob
Ralph Breaks the Internet but better
Grandmamah needed help with the ovens.
6 million mermaids? Sounds a bit much Ruby, but they would have deserved it
everyone likes fried fish
Where's that "Ruby Gillman but it's only Grandmamah being a racist b***h" video?
It's not racism if it's true.
Can memes save this movie?
Grandmamah being a racist, murder hungry c**t is more recognized but only Cinemaphile actively roles with it for laughs
It's spreading to YouTube and twitter, even tumblr
Yeah but they don't meme about it like we do
This film isn't like Bee Movie or Morbius
You also cant force memes
Only reasonable memes that could pop up are Groomer Chelsea and Racist Grandma , maybe Connors ugliness but that's about it
They try out larping or participate in a school play and pretend they are royalty waging war on each other
never have i enjoyed coping and seething as much as participating in the Ruby Gillman threads with the rest of you
Not sure I can say I enjoy it since I genuinely wanted this to be good, but you anons do make it more fun instead of totally depressing.
Anyone here watched Witch from Mercury? Imagine if Chelsea's betrayal was half as heartbreaking as this.
They could've pulled it off. Chelsea coldly throwing away their relationship to pursue revenge. Ruby begging her not to do it. All the pieces were there, before the rewrite.
Context?
But anon, this would require the movie to actually try to be non generic for once
>Anyone here watched Witch from Mercury?
I hated you frickers for spamming /m/ so not yet. But I agree that they could have handled this betrayal far better than they did with RGTK. Even Gundams lower points are handled better than whatever trainwreck this movie was.
Imagine if there was a scene where Chelsea did meet Agatha at the barbecue and either Agatha knows she's a mermaid or not
You think there's a storyboard out there before they made Chelsea and Nerissa the same person?
Didn't Ruby tell Agatha Chelsea is a mermaid? But now I'm curious if Chelsea did go and Agataha saw her and recognised her what would go down?
If she immediately recognizes her as Nerissa?
She'll lose her shit
Does Agatha know mermaids don't age?
Wouldn't Ruby protect Chelsea? That'd be absolutely hilarious especially if Nerissa taunted Agatha while at it
>Nerissa embarasses Agatha at her own BBQ by having her freak out over some random red headed teenager
>Nerissa sees all the people staring and says something like "I'm sorry I fell in love with your daughter" just to make Agatha look homophobic
>kisses Ruby
Everyone claps for her bravery and shit
Agatha watches in boiling anger and horror
But Anon, Ruby's into guys
Not if Chelsea has anything to say about it
She's into sleep paralysis demons.
Considering Ruby was willing to ignore phone calls from connor when she was hanging out with Chelsea, Ruby seemed to care more for Chelsea at that time than connor. Someone who is patient, understanding, kind, and knows her secret life and can relate to it? Not to mention as pretty as Chelsea is, Ruby would make an exception
Good god, it was perfect. They had it all laid out before them, and they just threw it away.
That thing called Conner isn't human and shouldn't be referred to as "a guy"
They'd need to bother giving Nerissa an actual personality for that Anon, what would Agatha's reaction be if Ruby showed up with Nerissa as her girlfriend?
I think she'd be more mad, as Nerissa is quite literally banging her daughter out of pettiness
>THE RED HEAD KID RIGHT THERE IS A 30000 YEAR OLD QUEEN YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE ME
Everyone looks at her as if she's schizo
Nerissa taunts her by getting closer to Ruby and telling her they should go.
They could have at least tried to make her fun for fricks sake.
Another missed opportunity
Is this all this film is? Missed opportunities?
Every bad film is a missed opportunity
This one was just painfully close
We have like five or six threads talking about how this movie is a total wasted potential
We've been like since the movie's premiere and even prior with some threads since the Annecy showing
I have saved some threads and the majority of them have reached the limit of replies. This movie awakened something in Cinemaphile. My god, Dreamworks had a gold mine all this time and they simple ignored it and we have a meh movie that will be remembered for the waste of potential
That is if people remember it anyways
Me after i done plowing is kraken ass
Love her heart shape pants.
Genuine question: if the writers or some dreamworks staff went on twitter and said "Chelsea isn't actually Nerissa guys" would that do more harm than good? Would it re-ignite some fanbase flame? Or will poor froggy have to carry on the battle all alone?
>Or will poor froggy have to carry on the battle all alone?
Froggy isn't the only Chelby artist
He's (she?) doing most of the heavy lifting that's for sure , explaining shit left and right and convicing twittards he's in the right
It would just make them guilty. How they knew they fricked up but did the shitty twist anyway.
Owning to your mistakes takes strength. At least Chelby artists would be overjoyed, at least put some bullshit about Nerissa being a teenager in mermaid years because those frickers didn't even intend her to be a grown-ass woman judging by interviews
They can ignore the movie and make a serie that tries to fix all the problems in the movie
Thinking about the early versions of the story keep reminding me how we were robbed
It's quite painful. I'd been hyped for this movie for a while too because of how much I loved some of the designs.
Artist?
Me, drew it just now. Search for "prrrromotion" on Deviantart and I'll upload it there in a moment
Thankfully I'm used to letdowns by now, and despite the missed potential I still enjoyed the movie enough to go see it in cinemas after watching it pirated. Pic related is still an amazing scene no matter what happens afterwards.
I'm lucky to have at least not drink the "dreamworks renaissance" kool aid. I didn't even find out about this film until it was basically in theaters. But man it's a let down even to me so I can't imagine having been actually hyped.
What were the story beats of the early version?
The earliest versions were from before My Life as a Kaiju was merged into Meet the Gillmans, so no superhero elements.
That's still strictly speculation
Storyboards?
The BFF storyboard made a month or two into development
The Chelsea != Nerissa storyboard that gives both Chelsea AND Agatha more depth
The trailer was what damaged the movie. The trailer basically shows the twist and the rest of the plot points+ the ugly Black person love interest
We've talked before how you can't show Ruby&Chelsea as friends because the audience will hate you for misleading them to a shitty hans twist
??? So you spoil the movie? That's moronic. No one would have minded
>"No one would have minded"
Have you checked any discussion about this movie anywhere? Not just here but on YouTube TV tropes twitter tumblr reddit you name it.
Now imagine how much worse it would've been if the audience didn't have a hint of Chelsea being evil
>We concern ourselves with the opinions of tards now
Maybe it deserved to fail then
The "tards" are the people who watch the movie, AKA the people who bring in the money. AKA the people you advertise to.
Anon, imagine if this movie marketed itself without spoiling Chelsea is evil
The audience is going in thinking this film is about a shy teenage girl befriending her polar opposite despite their differences in personality, popularity, and the hostile history between their respective races
Imagine marketing HTTYD except there's a big twist revealing Toothless was evil the whole time
Glad Joker Ruby artist is okay, how about joker Chelsea though?
Chelsea is on her Jesse Pinkman arc with Ahabsenberg.
I'm largely satisfied with the film. The finale was underwhelming because of the twist and the fight stupid but after TLW I didn't have high hopes for Dreamworks since it'd obviously be impossible for them to deliver greatness again so soon, nearly everything met my expectations I mostly watched it for the pretty pictures It is disheartening to see what was originally promised, though, but I don't see it as unsalvageable.
>unsalvageable
You're right, some things can still be retconned
>the fight stupid
>didn't enjoy the kaiju battle
Why did you post a pic of MGRR Raiden?
I meant the laser eyes and one liners; the dialogue dropped so hard it took me out of the film.
>Why did you post
I think he's neat.
Did this man even watch the fricking movie?
We are in the new age of woke, anon. Not being woke means no trans characters, no found family > real family, or general groomer propaganda.
Makes me wonder what will be considered anti-woke when I'm an old man.
Probably not having a kid/animal orgy.
Media illiterate at its finest
Now that is amazing. Poor punished Ruby, her film didn't die naturally, it got killed!
Meanwhile at DreamWorks
This wouldn't have happened oi Chelsea and Ruby were in lesbians with each other.
Ember and Nimona kicking Ruby while she's down.
Elemental isn't gonna reach 400-500 million
>oh yeah? well, Elemental did better than teenage kraken! take that!
Didn't it lose more money?
Elemental was also 4 x the budget
spent on animation and particle effects and it's still a better story than Ruby Gillman.
More people have watched it, but all conversation about it has stopped.

Want to know why this movie failed? Look at the director, he's the one who made Space chimps, literally all his movies besides croods are shit
Also shows how strong this movies potential was, even with all the shit writing it still lives on as a mid movie
Thread theme
If Ruby and Chelsea's friendship was the marketing focus, I could honestly picture this song being used for trailers
song is a jam!
Ruby can go both ways!
What if Connor started to suck on Chelsea's finger? How would she react?
Jump in disgust and surprise, or stick her finger in Ruby's mouth, might as well give them an indirect kiss
The New Girl.....
The new “sassy” girl.
What music does Ruby listen to?
Probably not what a 2020s teenager would listen to but it is very aquatic feeling.
%3D%3D
Imagine if the movie kept its "Spongebob Squarepants meets The Coneheads" idea and the movie had music like Ween instead of current pop songs
I would have liked to see more scenes at school
>trevin
is that really his name lmao. never heard of trevor kevin combination
Suction cups all over Chelsea's body.
>tfw i realized Nimona is from Noelle Stevenson
So is it another cuck and abusive relationship justification or more trans propaganda? All i know is that the girl transforms.
The comic was terrible. Not gonna watch the movie
Don’t waste like that.
the copium
>Defending Trans-lle Cucking-sons
Times have truly changed here.
It was one of the best animated movies of the year. You can watch for yourself.
Please give Ruby Gillman, a chance.
i did, and the movie sucks massive ass.
But i adore Ruby and Chelsea.
it was shit.
It’s not shit, it’s a piece of art!
it's shit, ok?
it's even worse than Mario.
"No."

i went to the premiere at the chinese theater in LA and 6 ppl in our row of 12 left before the movie ended
At what point did they leave?
i’m having trouble remembering the exact scenes but 2 left abt 50 mins in and the other 4 dipped out with 15 mins left (i was checking the time on my phone a lot)
You gotta be squidin me!
I'm surprisedCinemaphile likes to discuss this so much I've only heard bad things.
We like to discuss this film largely because of the astonishing amount of wasted potential highlighted by its unused storyboards
Guppyslayer Leia
That's hilarious, good stuff anon.
A recreation of the scene in the back of the police car or pulling a grin in the middle of that riot would make my sides ache. Doubly so if Ballister is in there somehow.
>Stop laughing you freak, this isn't funny.
>Yeah, the whole board is ruby-posting because of what you did.
>I know…isn't it beautiful?
How would Ruby install anarchy in seaciety?
She poisons grandmamah and leaves the kraken kingdom without a ruler
Killing three kraken boys in the subway
You mean mermaid boys.
Her and her Krew go on a rampage
She'd love it
>Hey Wade!
>You get what you fricking deserve *bang*
>misread the question
I'm tired bros, but yeah what the other anons said.
extremely based, joker anon! if your works weren't joker-based, i think your depictions of Ruby could pass off as official 2D art because I reckon it portrays her appearance and proportions very well.
All of this Hans talking has got me thinking...art chads... Please draw Ruby is Anna's coronation outfit and Chelsea in Hans outfit. Preferably when he lifts her up.
What is she even thinking in this scene?
This is a cultural face for Mermaids that means
"That's the daughter of my enemy, I can use her because I'm evil". See Cinemaphile, the signs of her being evil were there from the beginning.
>Frick, Ruby has some issues. I want to fix them, I don't want my friend to be sad. By God she looks cute when she's panicking.
What do people think of Chelsea's intro music?
Very moist, but that's not her theme. This is
i just saw this fanart on Twoter, and i really had to stop myself for doing a GROOMERS joke.
We haven't even hit bump limit yet
It’s just in case bruh
>It’s just in case bruh
In case of fricking what?
It's just 22 posts until we hit autosage
I'm with
. This guy is a rat.
Okay realistically speaking, how much coverage would there be if Chelby was endgame?
Movie would have been alotsa better.
There would be way more fanart than there already is, and dreamwork fans would be insufferable with saying they were braver than disney for showing a canon gay couple.
Aren't most Disney gay couples blink and you miss it stuff to be cut out for worldwide audiances? It would be props to Dreamworks for actually doing it in a way it couldn't be cut out. (Also because Ruby and Chelsea together makes me feel things)
Oh for sure I would prefer chelby to be canon, they're cute as frick, and it would be better than disney's current practices, but I know for sure the loudest dreamworks fans would inaccurately say dreamworks did gay canon couple first, when are clearly gay canon disney couples that appear that just aren't the main focus. But even that would be fine if chelby happened because it proved that dreamworks managed to make a great analogy film about gay repression and how that being "normal" isn't as good as showing who you truly are inside with two opposites finding love. In other words it would be a better Elemental
Firs gay couple in a children's movie? No.
First Major gay couple in a children's movie? Maybe? Which I think would still be a source of bragging rights.
And yeah I do agree with the last sentiment. Two opposites finding love I think is what almost everyone in these threads wanted, due to the onscreen chemistry between them (and the storyboards that break me a little every time I'm reminded of them)
That's what really sucks, they had a truly convincing and fantastic potential romance AND a great allegorical movie with a good message that would've legitimately earned them bragging rights and well-deserved praise, but they blew it because what? Complete incompetence in every single department level? Its just unbelievable.
Even if the movie still did poorly?
I smell a stealth counter op. We don't need a gen, we just move to available threads. An official general would just make the Kraken Krew a mod target.
Bruh, I ain’t no fed or hater dude, just use da damn baked bread bro.
I smell a smelly smell that so very... smelly... Almost like the Amphibia schizo that plagues the Disney threads...
Torrent pls.
Actually gonna take a break from these RGTK threads, this shit isn't healthy.
Enjoy your general, rat.
Take care of yourself Anon
Until something major happens, wait out until someone gets all the info from the DVD extras when that comes out in about a month
>mfw Ruby Gillman finally get the art she deserves
